A Beginner’s Guide to City Gardening - Sustainable and Organic Gardening In Limited Space
A Beginner’s Guide to City Gardening Sustainable and Organic Gardening In Limited Space Table of Contents Introduction Planning Out Your City Garden Situation and Shape Drainage and Soil Choice and Supply of Plants Tools Tool Maintenance Fertilizers Nutrients for the Soil Annual Digging Compost Heaps Garden Waste Why Compost Making a Compost Pit Manuring the Garden Watering Maintaining an Established Garden Conclusion Author Bio Introduction What do I mean by city gardening, you may ask? There was a time, when people had large open areas just outside their door steps in the town, or in the “country”, and all they had to do was fence it off and try to tame it. But as more and more people started migrating to cities, the available space for gardening began to be lessened. That was because concrete jungles came up, where once we had green fields. Suburbs on the outskirts of cities still had lots of land where gardens could grow, but for all those living uptown downtown and Midtown in Flats or in closed blocks, limited spaces and detached and semi-detached houses, one had to make do with imaginative and constructive ideas, with which they could still be in touch with greenery around them. Boxes and plant containers on windowsills have been a part of city gardening. You as a city gardener know that you have just limited resources in terms of space. That is why you have been to know how to adapt these limited resources to gain the satisfactory end you desire – that to have a garden in your house, or just outside your window sill, or in a room, or in your backyard. People are afraid to experiment in looking at all the options open to them, when they want to make a city garden in limited space. So they keep to potted geraniums, some sad looking chrysanthemums and other seasonal flowering plants, and possibly a little creeper. On the other hand, if you have been brought up in the country, and have spent a major portion of your life surrounded by plants, it is possible that you are instinctively going to have a knowledge of plants and their needs. And you are going to bring this knowledge along with you to the city. This knowledge does not come innately – you need to be surrounded by gardeners. Also, trial and error on your part and advice from experienced experts who in their time have tried and erred and then imparted that knowledge to you for your benefit, is going to help you make a really nice city garden. This book is for all those beginners who are dreaming of their own garden in which to relax and also for experienced gardeners, who want some extra tips and techniques with which they can improve their gardens.

Table of Contents Introduction Choosing an Aquarium Fabricating an Aquarium Placing Your Aquarium Rearing of Fish Temperature How Many Fish to an Aquarium? Right Fish Combinations Fish Food Fish Behavior Adding More Fish Fish Care Aquarium Care Changing Water Fish Care During Your Absence Light Egg Layers and Live Bearers Live Plants Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction So you have finally designed your home’s interior to your own satisfaction. The furniture, the curtains and all the decorative ornaments have been put in place. However, there is something missing, which could enhance the aesthetic beauty of your house. This is possibly an aquarium. Ornamental fish keeping has become a multimillion dollar modern-day art and business. Everyone wants to enjoy the beauty of exotic fish as well as attractive water plants. In fact, many doctors prescribe keeping aquariums in the houses of their stressed-out patients, so that they can look at the calm and tranquil movements of the fish moving about in their aquatic abode and thus relax. Once upon a time, aquariums were used to decorate the entrance of houses. However, nowadays, this business has grown from $8.9 billion in 2012 with an annual growth of 10% per annum! The USA is the largest market in the world of ornamental fish, importing fish worth $500 million each year, followed by the European Union and then Japan. When I was a youngster, father being the DIY type built an aquarium and stocked it with goldfish, neon tetras, Veil-tails and black Mollies. These were the only fish varieties available in the city at that time because nobody knew much about aquariums or fishes as pets/drawing room ornamentations. Nevertheless, people came, people saw, people admired, and people wanted. Within a month the whole neighborhood had aquariums and had begun to vie with each other to get more and more exotic and possibly expensive stock. And most of these experiments failed, because these people did not know much about aquarium care and fish care. This book is going to give you that basic information, so that you can choose your fish varieties, care for them, and even have an interesting long time hobby which relaxes and entertains you.

Your family got together, possibly taking the family dog along, got into the car and departed in that direction, a bit like USS ENTERPRISE, but this time going where so many families have gone before. Your parents knew exactly where you would be doing the camping, because they knew the best camping sites from experience and personal knowledge. Camping for most of us meant swimming, barbecues outside, sing-along around a campfire, with the crickets and katydids chirping away merrily in joyful companionship, and then somebody who had a really wicked sense of humor would start telling eerily terrifying and creepy stories, well chosen to make every single hair and hackles at the back of your neck rise in horror terror and panic! And then you need somebody to accompany you to your tent, as you creep shivering into your sleeping bag, mouth dry and totally unable to sleep, knowing full well, that nightmares are going to follow you, for quite a while afterwards. Especially the Cat Goddess, the lady in black, the Were tiger, who was once an accursed Egyptian priest and so on! And you promise yourself, that if you get through the night, safe and sound, you are going to wake up in the morning and strangle that wicked storyteller. Let me admit, I happen to be one of those human horrors, with a good stock of terrible, horrible tales, garnered from all around the world, since childhood, and half of them were learned in scouting/guiding camps, and then on camping trips with friends, their families, and colleagues.

Table of Contents Introduction Importance of Organic Matter Improving Soil Structure Soil Improving Crops Proper Selection of Soil Improving Crops Legumes Cow Peas and Soybean Sweet Clover and Hairy Vetch White, Yellow, and Blue Lupines Crotolaria and Sesbania Non-Leguminous Plants Field Brome Grass and Domestic Ryegrass When to Turn the Soil Improving Crops Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction One of the most difficult problems facing the experienced or amateur gardener whether he is a vegetable grower, or a future market gardener is to maintain the organic matter content of the soil. Nearly most vegetables and crops are grown on lands, that are intensively cropped. That means one or more cultivated crops are grown on the land each year, and the crop residues are not sufficient to replace the organic matter lost manually. In ancient times, it was the norm of a farmer to make sure that the land was fertilized with plenty of organic material and manure in order to provide nutrition to the soil, which had been depleted through a previous harvest. This was naturally the traditional method which was followed all down the ages, all over the world. People knew that the land gave enough of itself in order to produce your crops for you. But the land had to be fed. And this feeding was done with organic fertilizer, water, and other natural resources. At that time, nobody knew that there were plenty of helpful microorganisms present in the land, which were helping in the decomposition of the organic material in order to produce nutrients for the soil. The loss of organic matter was due to the action of these particular microorganisms which were decomposing it ultimately to produce carbon dioxide. The rate of the loss depended on the soil type, muster, temperature, and the type of the crop grown on that particular land. The microorganisms needed both water, therefore their growth, and continued happy action. The rate of the decomposition was slow in the dry soil.

Table of Contents Introduction Different Varieties of Pineapples Growing Pineapples The Pineapple Fruit Mature Fruit Feeding your pineapple plant Testing for Ripeness Marketing Your Fruit Fresh How to Slice a Pineapple. Nutritive value of Pineapples Fruit Rings – Pineapples to Heal Protection against the summer Traditional Pineapple Dishes Oriental Pineapple Rice Hawaiian Salad Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction My fascination with pineapples – Ananas comosus – started very early, especially because they were part and parcel of my childhood. Living in a tropical region means that you are going to have plenty of juicy tropical fruit to eat throughout the year, but pineapples were quite something else. Firstly you needed to get somebody to slice them, then you diced them, and then you either juiced the rich succulent pulp inside, or just ate them raw without juicing. When I was about 6 years old, an aunt who was living in the Philippines at that time, send me and my brother beautifully embroidered dresses made out of pineapple leaf fiber. These were a barong tagalog (Baro, for short and not Barong) for him and a Baro’t Saya for me. Apart from that we were often sent beautiful pineapple fiber –Pina- clothes, which were so durable that they lasted me until I went to University and even after that. I liked these shirts very much, because of their very interesting history. According to a story I had heard, the Philippines were a distant colony of Spain. So the conquerors had to be different, had not they. They put out an edict. Only pure blood Spaniards could tuck in their shirts in their trousers. The conquered natives had to wear their shirts outside as a symbol of slavery. But the Philippinos were, as any brave race, very ingenuous. All these shirts were embroidered so beautifully that they became glorious works of art. So the Spaniards could have their unadorned tucked in shirts, but the natives wore their baros proudly. Alas, nearly 3 decades down the line, those embroidered Baros have disappeared from the Filipino markets. So sad to see a proud tradition die out.

Table of Contents Getting Started Chapter # 1: What is Endurance? Chapter # 2: Requirements Chapter # 3: Maximal Oxygen Uptake Chapter # 4: Economy of Motion Lactate Threshold Training Chapter # 1: Introduction Chapter # 2: Practical Approach Chapter # 3: To Sum it Up Nutrition Fat: Carbohydrates: Proteins: Conclusion References Author Bio Publisher What is Endurance? Endurance is personal to everyone; it’s what we use to bring out our top athletic potential. Still, there are multitudes of versions to the definition of endurance. Some define it as running a 10K race while some define it as riding a bike for a century. Individuals strive to show their level of endurance by competing in worldwide events like racing in the Olympics, riding a bike in the Tour de France, or going 8 hours in the lava bath in Hawaii. They do all this to show their superb mental and physical control. Endurance provides us with the physical, mental, and chemical tools required to enable the body to maintain a constant speed over long distances. It is an expression of the aerobic system of the body. This book will base its knowledge upon the fact that aerobic muscle fibers burn fat for energy, which powers all the nerves and blood vessels associated with the particular muscle to come into action. Thus, training the aerobic system can, in effect, increase a person’s endurance allowing him/her to cover 5 miles in 40 minutes, when previously it took 45 minutes, at an average heart rate of 150. This particular feature of endurance is known as aerobic speed. While endurance increases our potential output, it does so without harming the body. It is one’s ability to improve his/her athleticism without sacrificing his health at the same time. If you look closely, you will notice that consciously or not, you spend most of your life increasing your endurance and longevity at something; whether it’s sports, puzzles, or everyday chores. This book will focus on improving your physical performance by training for endurance.

Digestive Buttermilk Traditional Ancient Buttermilk Recipe Spicy Salt Salty Buttermilk Traditional Clarified Butter – Desi Ghee Conclusion Author Bio- Publisher Introducing Ayurveda Millenniums ago, an alternative medicine science based on natural ingredients, began to be practiced in the area, which is now called the Indian subcontinent. This science was known as Ayurveda. The exact Sanskrit meaning of this word means life knowledge. For millenniums, the art of healing knowledge based on this science has been passed down through the generations to heal and cure people of the diseases known to man. More than 5000 years ago, two of these great wise men, who practiced this science, named Charaka and Susrutha made medical compendiums, which talked about healing procedures, operational procedures, and medicines which would be used to heal the diseases known to man down the ages. These classics written in Sanskrit have been considered to be the foundation of the ancient science of Ayurveda. At the same time, traditional Chinese medicine was also making a name for itself, thanks to great medical practitioners, who took the help of these compendiums in order to develop well-known medical systems. Nowadays, these systems are considered to be alternative and complementary treatments, supporting the more conventional forms of modern medicine. This science is practiced in the USA, as a complementary health care licensed practice. This science is divided into eight parts – General medicine, surgery, pediatrics, dentistry/ENT/ophthalmology, toxicology, psychiatric treatments, anti- aging remedies and remedies for bearing healthy children. So, one can see that even at that time, all the ills of human beings were studied and remedies hunted for them. Ayurveda is based on curing disease or disorders from the root level. It uses herbs which are 100% natural, and are definitely not going to have a detrimental effect upon the body, when you stop using them. According to ancient Ayurveda, a living body is made up of five elements. The proper balance between the five elements so that they work in harmonious tandem with nature. This is taking your measurements and after that we are going to start doing the pattern drafting in volume III. So while you are measuring, you have to remember these important points – garment cutting is based on measurements and that is why every inch is going to count. Also, you have to give some allowance to many parts of the garments so that you do not find yourself bursting out of it because it has been cut too tight and there was no way in which you could loosen it. Apart from that, you need to know the personal requirements regarding the style, fit, pockets, shape, buttons, color, ideas about what is wanted, before taking measurements. If you are making a dress for yourself, remember to look at all the design options available out there, so that you can find something which suits you best.

John Davison Beazley is responsible for making the study of Athenian vase-paintings a branch of art history. His lists of artists and groups, published in great volumes and widely circulated, have become standard reference books; but his lectures have never been available to a wide audience. The eight lectures collected here are fully illustrated and include a lively account of 6th-century B.C. Athenian vase-painting, a survey of peculiarly Athenian vase forms, a look at the historical, literary, and visual evidence for the art form, and a concluding lecture which gives timeless advice to the young.

Fish For Kids - Amazing Animal Books For Young Readers

Fish For Kids - Amazing Animal Books For Young Readers
Fish For Kids - Amazing Animal Books For Young Readers Table of Contents Introduction What are fish? What do fish eat? How do fish breathe? Fish and appearance Fish and each other What do fish do? Saltwater versus freshwater fish Sharks Goldfish Marlins Lungfish Mud skippers Coelacanths Conclusion Author Bio Introduction The name ‘fish’ is a very broad term, meaning that it refers to many different types of animals, from sharks to goldfish to lungfish. Since there are more areas covered with water than there is dry land, fish are all around the world, and quite possibly outnumber most other animals. In older times, a fish used to be anything that swam. A beaver was a fish, for instance, or a frog. Now, the definition is narrower, but still has many different creatures in it. In this book, you’ll read about fish and how they work, and then you’ll read about different types of fish. However, since there are thousands upon thousands of different kinds of fish, it’s really only scratching the surface of different fish species. From the endangered coelacanth to the common goldfish, all fish are interesting in their own way.

Chapter 2 Fascinating Cat Species Balinese: Chartreux: Egyptian Mau: Chapter 3 - A Cat’s History A Cat’s Life Fascinating Features Conclusion Author Bio Introduction The smallest feline is a masterpiece. Leonardo da Vinci Have you ever thought of a cat as masterpiece in motion? There is no doubt cats are fascinating creatures, from the tip of their ears all the way to their furry little toes! Cats have a rich history going back many years, long before you and I were even born. Many nations, but especially ancient Egypt, worshiped cats as gods and goddesses. Some Egyptians loved their cats like family, and gave them beautiful jewelry to wear around their necks. However, other nations feared this unique creature and tried to destroy them, only to realize much later how important cats truly are. Thankfully, cats survived, and today are one of the most popular pets in the United States. But they are not only pets. Did you know some cats even ran for office? In the small town of Talkeetna, Alaska a fun loving cat called Stubbs won the election! And it has been reported that he’s an excellent mayor. But that’s not all. He even has his own Facebook page affectionately called Mayor Stubbs. Cats and dogs also have quite an interesting history, even though most people claim the animals hate each other on sight! While that may be true in some cases, in others it is quite the opposite. The Journal for Applied Animal Behavior Science published an article in 2008, which explained the problem between cats and dogs. It’s something that affects us as people too! Have you guessed yet? Well, it’s quite simple. It’s called…“lack of communication.” Don’t be surprised at this fact. Just like us, if cats and dogs don’t “talk things out” they won’t get along. So the Journal noted the importance of introducing the feline and the canine (Cat and dog), early on in life. In other words, they should be introduced at less than 6 months old. If they are, then both cat and dog will understand each other and coexist together in peace! Kitten & Puppy playing together Perhaps this plan will not work for every single cat, but it’s worth a try. Of course cats have a very unique personality, and some may even be a bit moody. But on the whole, they are a beautiful expression of nature’s great diversity!

A Full and True Account of the Wonderful Mission of Earl Lavender, which Lasted One Night and One Day
Following in the tradition of Don Quixote, Earl Lavender is the story of two impecunious gentlemen who run away from their conventional lives, style themselves ''Earl Lavender'' and ''Lord Brumm'', and set out to preach the new creed of Evolution. Their hilarious romp across London leads them to all sorts of strange adventures, such as a wild hansom cab chase, a sojourn among a subterranean society of flagellants, and the discovery of the evolutionary ''Missing Link''. A key Decadent text, Earl Lavender (1895) is also Davidson''s response to what he saw as some of the more ridiculous ideas and behaviours of the age. This new edition features a new introduction by Mark Valentine and a reproduction of the original frontispiece by Aubrey Beardsley. John Davidson (1857-1909) was a Scottish poet, playwright, and novelist. Although during his lifetime he was compared favourably with Hardy, Housman, and Yeats, and admired by Shaw and T. S. Eliot, Davidson''s reputation has languished since his tragic suicide. Long out of print, Earl Lavender is now restored to modern audiences, who will find that Davidson''s humour and satire are as fresh today as in 1895.

Winter Survival Tactics - Necessary Items For Your Vehicle
Table of Contents Introduction Equipment for Building Fires Making Your Own Char- Cloth Up to date paper maps Food and Water Easy to Make High-Calorie Granola Bars Dried Meat Pemmican Extra Batteries For Your Cell Phone Charger Weaponry Clothing Hypothermia Treatment Conclusion Author Bio Publisher Introduction I was getting to be a bit sick and tired of all those idiotic escapist story so-called romantic novel theme lines, when a woman got into her car, got lost because she did not have a map, did not know how to read a map, and then she left her car and went off looking for shelter. And of course she found the house of her Prince charming, deep in the woods. Please understand that authors write such stupid books, because their publishers want them to write such unrealistic books. And nowadays, there is a trend of an expectant mother, going off in the snow, – naturally, she is a single mother, – and she has to reach her destination, in the snow, and naturally on page 2, there she is, the stupid wench, stuck in the snow and the ice. Any person who has two go out in the cold weather, especially when it is snowing is going to get stuck 88% of the time and this silly female is going to die of exposure/hypothermia. But this being an utterly brainless B grade novel, she gets out of her car and staggers out, only to faint at the door of a multimillionaire Sheriff/cowboy/business tycoon/Arab Prince with American mother/tall dark and handsome and single or European royalty who is really going to be thrilled at the thought of marrying a single mother, who had a temporary relationship or one night stand with her boss/punk boyfriend/live in partner and bringing up somebody else’s baby, just because the mother is such a brainless but bosomy babe. And he is going to take her in, and she is going to have her baby in that cabin, without the help of a doctor, because all the lines are down, and both of them are going to live happily ever after. It says so on page 186, just before The End. Excuse me while I take some time out to gag. So, this book is for all of those who have to go out in the cold, willy-nilly, and not only are this good survival tactics, for the time when we are going to suffer from the nuclear winter, but also it is a complete guide of what you, man or woman, should have in your vehicle, when you are going out in hostile terrain. You may also find some real-life experiences, based on sometimes funny sometimes grim incidents, in a very interesting life, in the midst of a very outdoorsy type active family. You may find yourself a bit perplexed at these experiences but then they took place in other times, other climes and other lands. But they are real-life experiences and could happen to anybody.

You would be flavoring your food with spices or even with natural minerals, because you did not know all about the value of the plant world to make a difference between a bland dish, and a delicious one. Also, just imagine trying to get rid of a cold more than 5000 years ago, by rubbing your face with cold water. Until somebody decided that he was feeling really cold and he needed something hot to drink. So he just put some water on to boil, but because he did not like the taste of bland water, he just added some nice green leaves. Hey, this chance combination turned out to be really tasty. It also happened to cure his cold and made him feel really warm. Believe it or not, most of the herbal lore, which has passed down to us down the ages has been found due to experimentation or by Lucky chances. Also, anything which my goats, sheep, horses and cattle liked may not have suited my innards and vice versa. That is why you do not give your cats and dogs , well spiced food, especially your pizza remains, unless you want them really sick. At that time people did not know much about writing, because we are talking about prehistoric times. However, down the generations, they passed on this knowledge to the people of their tribe. And when they met up with other people of other tribes, they shared this knowledge. This continued some sensible person decided that this knowledge had to be stored up for the use of future generations. And so this compile addition of herbal lore and information was born and the teachers, the wise men helped mankind for ages to come. This included the knowledge of the essential oils in the plants. Basil and mint essential oils are excellent for cooking and in beauty products. Many of the herbs and remedies known to our ancestors have been lost with the passage of time. However, a lot of these remedies are still being rediscovered by chance, or through documents, found in excavations. Many of the plants which were so common during the time of the Pharaohs are now extinct. Nevertheless, their knowledge can be considered to be the basis of modern medical knowledge. They knew all about how to use onions to cure colds, as well as heart diseases. Thanks to the Eber papyri , modern researchers are researching on the benefit of onions to cure heart ailments.
