The Jewish-Christian Schism

release date: Nov 12, 2008
The Jewish-Christian Schism
Between 1971 and 1996 the late John Howard Yoder (1927-1997) wrote a series of ten essays revisiting the Jewish-Christian schism in which he argued that, properly understood, Jesus did not reject Judaism, Judaism did not reject Jesus, and the Apostle Paul’s universal mandate for the salvation of the nations is best understood not as a product of Hellenization, but rather in the context of his Jewish heritage. This posthumous collection of essays is arguably his most ambitious project and displays Yoder’s original thesis that the Jewish-Christian schism did not have to be. Originally published in 2003 by SCM Press and Eerdmans.

The Devil Rides Outside

release date: Jan 01, 2010
The Devil Rides Outside
No less a critic than Clifton Fadiman called "The Devil Rides Outside" a staggering novel. The first novel of John H. Griffin, it written during the authorOCOs decade of blindness following an injury suffered during the closing days of World War II. As "Time Magazine" described it, "The Devil Rides Outside" has some things relatively rare in U.S. letters: energy, earnestness and unashamed religious fervor. Written as a diary, the novel relates the intellectual and spiritual battles of a young American musicologist who is studying Gregorian chant in a French Benedictine monastery. Even though he is not Catholic, he must live like the monks, sleeping in a cold stone cell, eating poor food, sharing latrine duties. His dreams rage with memories of his Paris mistress; his days are spent being encouraged by the monks to seek God. He takes up residence outside the monastery after an illness, but he finds the village a slough of greed and pettiness and temptation. Indeed, as the French proverb says, the devil rides outside the monastery walls."

Felling & Pining

release date: Nov 03, 2020
Felling & Pining
‘Felling & Pining’ depicts life, death, faith, and doubt in the poorest and most pious parts of the United States. With 430 original color images, John Howard looks back to 19th and 20th century southern communities, examines present-day legacies, and “pines forward”—not toward a heavenly afterlife but a near future rife with progressive possibility. The photobook contrasts nature’s beauty with bleak histories of Native American expulsion, African American slavery, pernicious labor exploitation, and persistent environmental degradation, insisting that we can and must do better. Punctuated with warm portraits of the Deep South’s diverse peoples, it honors their forebears and holds out hope for their heirs. ‘Felling & Pining’ is an unusual and impassioned visual plea for social and economic justice.

Royal Priesthood
Readers will discover that it is not possible to disengage John Howard Yoder’s practice of ecumenical dialogue from his vision of the church. Yoder’s approach to ecumenical dialogue correlates with his conception of the faithfulness of the church. His vision of the church poses challenges for Christians of all communions because he calls both for disciplined dialogue and for faithful servanthood that renders the confession of Jesus Christ’s lordship meaningful. This collection of 17 essays on themes ecclesiological and ecumenical is intended to demonstrate the substantial unity of Yoder’s work over the past four decades. Many of these essays are often cited by researchers but have been till now unobtainable. Three of these texts have never been published before. Editor Michael Cartwright has contributed a substantial introduction on the “Yoderian” project, and a select bibliography prepared by Mark Nation catalogs Yoder’s writings—published and unpublished—on ecclesiology and ecumenism.

So far, he has seized $700,000 of American businessmen''s assets. Every Mafia casino has been closed, and over a billion dollars of mob money has been confiscated. Sam Giancana and other Mafia bigwigs are extremely unhappy with Fidel. They are looking for a way to get even. So are the Americans, many of whom have been forced to flee to safety. Castro has already executed seven hundred Cuban citizens who dared to object to his murderous regime. There are no rights in Cuba other than those granted by Fidel Castro and his henchmen. Murder and mayhem are the order of the day. The burning question is, what can be done to stop Castro? On March 17th, President Eisenhower gives his permission for the C.I.A.''s Allen Dulles and Richard Bissell to develop a small, covert, anti-Castro operation. A thousand Cuban refugees will be recruited and trained as guerrilla fighters and saboteurs. When they''re ready, they''ll be infiltrated back into Cuba, where they''ll begin a series of raids designed to upset, and eventually overthrow, the Castro regime. In the pages of The Castro Conspiracy we''ll meet the U.S. Marine and Special Forces personnel who train those men. We''ll visit them in their Central American mountain and jungle training camps. Then we''ll watch as the 1960 Presidential Election puts a reluctant commander-in-chief in the White House, and see the entire, carefully orchestrated, covert operation fall apart. We''ll attend dozens of secret meetings conducted by the CIA, FBI, and the CFR. At those meetings we''ll finally discover why Operation Trinidad, a small, easily controlled and plausible incursion, a plan that was almost certain to succeed, was turned into the over-zealous, overly ambitious, and impossible to control fiasco that the Bay of Pigs Invasion eventually became. We''ll meet the Kennedy family and the Castros, along with the deadly Mafia hitmen who are recruited to kill Castro. Washington insiders and Hollywood stars will be on display. Along the way we''ll watch men who willingly risk their lives to achieve success, and women who willingly use their wiles to keep them from gaining that success. We''ll get to know Jack Kennedy, a man who desperately wants the Cuban Invasion to succeed, and John F. Kennedy, a president who desperately can''t afford to allow it to. And we''ll be present when he cancels American air support the decision that spelled doom for the invasion and every Cuba Freedom Fighter. We''ll spend three frightening days in the middle of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, and eighteen frustrating months in its aftermath fighting and dying on the beaches running and hiding in the swamps sweating and suffering in the prisons. Mark and John the First and Last Gospels

release date: Sep 17, 2009
Mark and John the First and Last Gospels
A radical new translation of the New Testament Gospels of Mark and John, this book also includes the three Biblical letters written by John, the Elder, plus the first letter attributed to Peter, which, as Peter himself acknowledges in his postscript, was actually written by Silvanus. One of many innovations in this new translation, is that for the first time in 1,800 years, all Scripture references made by the evangelists have been traced back to the Greek Septuagint which they actually quoted, not the correct Hebrew text which most theologians think they should have used. Some of the differences are quite startling.

Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War: The Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality

release date: Jan 01, 2014
Harlem's Rattlers and the Great War: The Undaunted 369th Regiment and the African American Quest for Equality
When on May 15, 1918 a French lieutenant warned Henry Johnson of the 369th to move back because of a possible enemy raid, Johnson reportedly replied: "I''m an American, and I never retreat." The story, even if apocryphal, captures the mythic status of the Harlem Rattlers, the AfricanAmerican combat unit that grew out of the 15th New York National Guard, who were said to have never lost a man to capture or a foot of ground that had been taken. It also, in its insistence on American identity, points to a truth at the heart of this book--more than fighting to make the world safe for democracy, the black men of the 369th fought to convince America to live up to its democratic promise. It is this aspect of the storied regiment''s history--its place within the larger movement of African Americans for full citizenship in the face of virulent racism--that Harlem''s Rattlers and the Great War brings to the fore. With sweeping vision, historical precision, and unparalleled research, this book will stand as the definitive study of the 369th. Though discussed in numerous histories and featured in popular culture (most famously the film Stormy Weather and the novel Jazz), the 369th has become more a matter of mythology than grounded, factually accurate history--a situation that authors Jeffrey T. Sammons and John H. Morrow, Jr. set out to right. Their book--which eschews the regiment''s famous nickname, the "Harlem Hellfighters," a name never embraced by the unit itself--tells the full story of the self-proclaimed Harlem Rattlers. Combining the "fighting focus" of military history with the insights of social commentary, Harlem''s Rattlers and the Great War reveals the centrality of military service and war to the quest for equality as it details the origins, evolution, combat exploits, and postwar struggles of the 369th. The authors take up the internal dynamics of the regiment as well as external pressures, paying particular attention to the environment created by the presence of both black and white officers in the unit. They also explore the role of women--in particular, the Women''s Auxiliary of the 369th--as partners in the struggle for full citizenship. From its beginnings in the 15th New York National Guard through its training in the explosive atmosphere in the South, its singular performance in the French army during World War I, and the pathos of postwar adjustment--this book reveals as never before the details of the Harlem Rattlers'' experience, the poignant history of some of its heroes, its place in the story of both World War I and the African American campaign for equality--and its full importance in our understanding of American history.
