Bitter Water

release date: Dec 21, 2021
Bitter Water
What happens when you start delving into the seedy world of big business and corporate corruption? When deception, misrepresentation and dishonesty combine with powerful individuals and a toxic leadership style, the results can be deadly. Bitter Water is an intriguing and thought-provoking thriller which sees a team of researchers in Oxford banding together to try to understand the pathological behaviour of those at the top of corrupt corporations. An unlikely crew made up of experts and insiders, the group has to deal with its own internal conflicts as well as the threat posed by those who want to silence them. From awkward family connections to forbidden love interests, the team end up questioning their own ethics as well as those of the people they are studying. And when they end up uncovering a project which takes advantage of a vulnerable population, will they be able to do anything to stop it? Bitter Water is a tale of corruption, modern terrorism and the attempted suppression of political dissent. A battle of social justice versus corporate power, John King's novel will make you question everything you thought you knew about big business and the people behind it.

H.B. Morse, Customs Commissioner and Historian of China

H.B. Morse, Customs Commissioner and Historian of China
Hosea Ballou Morse (1855-1934) sailed to China in 1874, and for the next thirty-five years he labored loyally in the Imperial Chinese Maritime Customs Service, becoming one of its most able commissioners and acquiring a deep knowledge of China's economy and foreign relations. After his retirement in 1909, Morse devoted himself to scholarship. He pioneered in the Western study of China's foreign relations, weaving from the tangled threads of the Ch'ing dynasty's foreign affairs several seminal interpretive histories, most notably his three-volume magnum opus, The International Relations of the Chinese Empire (1910-18). At the time of his death, Morse was considered the major historian of modern China in the English-speaking world, and his works played a profound role in shaping the contours of Western scholarship on China. Begun as a labor of love by his protégé, John King Fairbank, this lively biography based primarily on Morse's vast collection of personal papers sheds light on many crucial events in modern Chinese history, as well as on the multifaceted Western role in late imperial China, and provides new insights into the beginnings of modern China studies in this country. Half-finished when Fairbank died, the project was completed by his colleagues, Martha Henderson Coolidge and Richard J. Smith.

The Seal Club

release date: Nov 12, 2020
The Seal Club
The Seal Club is a three-novella collection by the authors Alan Warner, Irvine Welsh and John King, three stories that capture their ongoing interests and concerns, stories that reflect bodies of work that started with Morvern Callar, Trainspotting and The Football Factory - all best-sellers, all turned into high-profile films.

The Football Factory

release date: Sep 30, 2012
The Football Factory
The Football Factory centres on Tom Johnson, a reasoned 'Chelsea hooligan' who represents a disaffected society operating by brutal rules. We are shown the realities of life - social degradation, unemployment, racism, casual violence, excessive drink and bad sex - and, perhaps more importantly, how they fall into a political context of surveillance, media manipulation and division. Graphic and disturbing, sometimes very funny, and deeply affecting throughout, The Football Factory is a vertiginous rush of adrenaline - the most authentic book yet on the so-called English Disease.

Headhunters

release date: Sep 30, 2011
Headhunters
Following on from his bestselling study of violence, The Football Factory, John King considers Britain's other obsession - sex. Formed in the chemical mists of New Year's Eve, The Sex Division sees the once sacred act of procreation at its most material, as five men devise a system based on the sexual act. In this lager-soaked league, the most that women can offer a man is 4 points - unless, that is, she leaves her handbag unattended... From its base in the asset-stripped, emotionally castrated 90s, Headhunters shows the dreams of The Sex Division members breaking through the heavy media cloud of anorexic pin-ups and paedophile fashion. A missing brother, prophetic visions, a love affair, and tit-for-tat confrontation draw the characters out into the open - revealing the men behind the machismo, their need for mutual respect, and their recognition of the hidden or suppressed affinities.

Amazing Grace Says It All

release date: Jun 01, 2010
Amazing Grace Says It All
From his personal struggles growing up to the struggles of his congregation, author John King knows the meaning of 'Amazing Grace.' But it is the text of the hymn that captures the essence of the Christian faith. In six short stanzas this hymn lays out the most basic truth that the love and grace of God reaches out to all human beings everywhere and in all circumstances. Amazing Grace Says It All takes the text of that great hymn and helps the reader understand God's unconditional love and his amazing willingness to accept each person just as they are through personal stories of individuals finding grace.

England Away

release date: Dec 31, 2011
England Away
Having examined England's twin obsessions - violence and sex - in THE FOOTBALL FACTORY and HEADHUNTERS, John King completes his trilogy with ENGLAND AWAY: sex and violence abroad, under the Union Jack. The novel works on three levels - past, present and future - as pensioner Bill Farrell remembers his war experiences in a London pub, Tommy Johnson fights his way through Holland and Germany for an England football match in Berlin, and Harry considers the future fuelled by doses of Dutch skunk and German speed. John King's powerful new novel looks at notions of what it means to be English. Exploring stereotypes of language and nationalism, the primal pulls of lust and aggression, ENGLAND AWAY culminates in a unity of the tribes and a blitzkreig in the streets of Berlin.

Tribal Leadership Revised Edition

release date: Jan 03, 2012
Tribal Leadership Revised Edition
It’s a fact of life: birds flock, fish school, people “tribe.” Malcolm Gladwell and other authors have written about how the fact that humans are genetically programmed to form “tribes” of 20-150 people has proven true throughout our species’ history. Every company in the word consists of an interconnected network of tribes (A tribe is defined as a group of between 20 and 150 people in which everyone knows everyone else, or at least knows of everyone else). In Tribal Leadership, Dave Logan, John King, and Halee Fischer-Wright show corporate leaders how to first assess their company’s tribal culture and then raise their companies’ tribes to unprecedented heights of success. In a rigorous eight-year study of approximately 24,000 people in over two dozen corporations, Logan, King, and Fischer-Wright discovered a common theme: the success of a company depends on its tribes, the strength of its tribes is determined by the tribal culture, and a thriving corporate culture can be established by an effective tribal leader. Tribal Leadership will show leaders how to employ their companies’ tribes to maximize productivity and profit: the author’s research, backed up with interviews ranging from Brian France (CEO of NASCAR) to “Dilbert” creator Scott Adams, shows that over three quarters of the organizations they’ve studied have tribal cultures that are adequate at best.

The United States and China, 4th Revised and Enlarged Edition

release date: Jun 30, 2009
The United States and China, 4th Revised and Enlarged Edition
For generations scholars and the general public have looked to John King Fairbank for knowledge and insights about China. In four editions of this work he has provided these. Reviews of this book: "An indispensable book for thoughtful people." DD--New York Times Book Review "Fairbank provides a miraculously concise account of Chinese civilization from its foundations to the present day...Maps, photographs, and an 80-page bibliography make this an invaluable reference work." DD--New Republic "As useful and timely as when it first appeared in 1948. Written by America's foremost China scholar, John Fairbank, the book addresses a popular, not the academic, audience. It offers a sweeping view of the Chinese polity from ancient times up to the recent, convoluted period of Western contact, spiced by the wit and insight into detail of a geographer who drew the maps himself...Yet the book offers much to the specialist as well as the layman. To the historian, a state-of-the-art review of the latest historical analysis of modern china...To the student, a cogent guide to the field...For the diplomat and businessman, the work explores that most intangible but also most influential area of human feeling between the two countries that has launched ventures and derailed them." DD--China Business Review "The best general introduction to the Chinese political system...A book of love and great learning." DD--Kirkus Reviews "Still flashes with brilliance in its latest (fourth) incarnation...With this latest edition of what is arguably the best guide to China in any language, American and other non-Chinese readers may finally catch a glimpse of the 'very complex' Chinese way of life." DD--Asiaweek Literary Review "[Fairbank's] ability to transcend the academic to write a highly readable, authoritative, information-packed, perceptive and analytical account of the Chinese is unsurpassed. This is must reading for all Asiaphiles." DD--Asia Mail

Talking to God

release date: Dec 01, 2018
Talking to God
I was sixteen. The pastor organized a mid-week bible study to which I faithfully showed up. Not unusual, as he spoke of this and that my mind raced on ahead marking the path with the breadcrumbs of a hundred questions I was intent on asking him when the study ended for the evening. Afterward as he descended the stairway from the upper room (how appropriately named) in which we gathered for the study I matched his gait step for step while picking up the crumbs (my questions recalled) and force-feeding them to him one after another after another. Suddenly, he stopped. Was he needing to focus and think through some astute answer to my latest? Not exactly. Just then he sighed and betraying his exhaustion and wanting to bring this night to a merciful end, he sighed, "John, Ask God!" What a brilliant idea which, until pastor mentioned it, I had never thought to do. It became a life changing word of advice.

The Early History of the Sons of England Benevolent Society

release date: Oct 23, 2017
The Early History of the Sons of England Benevolent Society
The Sons of England Benevolent Society was a secret society of English Protestants, founded in Toronto, Canada, during the year 1874. Its purpose was to unite Englishmen for mutual support, social and moral uplift, and to offer financial security to them and their families should they fall upon hard times. In addition, the society aimed to preserve and propagate Anglo-Protestant culture and influence throughout the British Empire. It was especially focused on preserving the Empire's connection with the mother-country. The brotherhood established a network of lodges throughout Canada, South Africa, and Rhodesia, and collaborated with the Orange Order and the Order of the Sons of St. George (its "sister society" in the United States) on a number of issues. Its membership was composed of tens of thousands of workingmen, as well as many men of political influence, including newspaper editors, city mayors, aldermen, chiefs of police, politicians, military officers, and members of parliament. This book was originally written in 1891 by an early, and prominent member of the society, Dr. John S. King. The work not only includes the early history of the society, including its origins and the establishment of the first Grand Lodge, but also biographical sketches of its founding members. The book explores the reasons as to why the founding members felt the need to form such a society, and how they went about creating the first lodge, as well as some of the difficulties they had to overcome in its formative years, This historic work offers a fascinating insight into a little-known secret society that wielded significant influence in Canada and southern Africa for almost a hundred years.

White Trash
Ruby James lives life to the full, the state-run hospital where she works as a nurse a microcosm of the community in which she was born and bred. While some outsiders might label the people of this town "white trash," she knows different, reveling in a vibrant society that values people over money, actions above words. For Ruby, every person is unique and has a story to tell, whether it is skinhead taxi-driver Steve, retired teacher and rocker Pearl, magic-mushroom expert Danny Wax Cap, or former merchant seaman Ron Dawes. She encourages people to tell their tales, thrilled by the images created. Outside of work she drinks, dances, and has fun with her friends, at the same time dealing with her mother's Alzheimer's and a vision from the past, aware that physical and mental health are precious and easily lost. The epitome of positive thinking, Ruby sees the best in everyone--until the day true evil comes to call. A mystery figure roams the corridors of Ruby's state-run hospital. He carries special medicine and a very different set of values. He tells himself that he wants to help, increase efficiency, but cost-cutting leads to social cleansing as humans are judged according to that white-trash agenda. Excuses and justifications flow as notions of heaven and hell are distorted. Set against a background of pirate-radio stations, pink Cadillacs, and freeway dreams, White Trash insists there is no such thing as white trash.

A History of Dartmouth College, 1815 1909

A History of Dartmouth College, 1815 1909
Excerpt from A History of Dartmouth College, 1815 1909: Being the Second Volume of a History of Dartmouth College and the Town of Hanover, New Hampshire, Begun by Frederick Chase The first volume of the "History of Dartmouth College and the Town of Hanover," by Frederick Chase, appeared more than twenty years ago. The second volume, carrying on the history of the College but not of the Town, owes much to him. He had not only outlined the plan of work, but had examined carefully a good part of the ground which it covers, and he had written something of it. A considerable part of Chapter X on the College Controversy, was thus prepared by him, and also a considerable part of the special topics with which the volume concludes. In completing the work thus begun I wish to acknowledge to the fullest degree my obligations to Mr. Chase. In following out the lines suggested by his memoranda I have been profoundly impressed with the keenness and thoroughness of his investigations. I have thoroughly examined the statements of his notes, as far as they depended on documents, and in no case have I found them incorrect. In a few cases I have allowed statements to pass, which I could not confirm, but which I knew came to him through oral testimony that was closed to me by death. But while I gladly associate the name of Frederick Chase with mine in the preparation of this volume, for the years that have passed since his death have given me an increased sense of the richness of his friendship and the value of his work, I do not lay upon him the responsibility for any part of the volume, except the parts which I have said that he wrote, and these I have gone over with as much care as if they were my own. All the letters and documents quoted in the volume are in the possession of the College unless a different ownership is indicated. The Goede Vrouw of Mana-Ha-Ta

release date: Dec 01, 2013
The Goede Vrouw of Mana-Ha-Ta
An excerpt from the beginning of the PREFACE: It has been well said in the preface to the "Lives of the Lindsays" that 'Every family should have a record of its own. Each has its peculiar spirit running through the whole line, and in more or less development, perceptible in every generation. We do not love our kindred for their glory or their genius, but for their domestic affections and private virtues. An affectionate regard to their memory is natural to the heart; it is an emotion totally distinct from pride-an ideal love. Our ancestors, it is true, are denied to our personal acquaintance, but the light they shed during their lives survives within their tombs, and will reward our search if we explore them' Encouraged by these wise words, I am emboldened to lay before the public the results of my researches into the lives of the women who, by their industry, their courage, and their piety, helped to create a colony in the New World, and I have followed out the history (as far as was possible) to their descendants of the third and fourth generation. The information contained in this volume was culled from various sources, many of them not open to the public, such as private family papers to which I have fortunately had access, and some of which I had inherited, they having been lain aside by an older member of the family with the view of compiling a family history, which was never accomplished. Family traditions have been used which have always been given for what they are worth and always noted, histories were consulted that have been long out of print, and are now to be found only on the back shelves of some old-fashioned library, as well as those that are commonly known and often consulted by the public. All of these I have woven into a web. If the pattern is not clear, or the colors are not properly assorted, it must be excused, as being the work of a woman, done in a womanly way, from a woman's point of view. History is generally written by men, who dwell on politics, wars, and the exploits of their sex. Household affairs, women's influence, social customs and manners, are seldom chronicled, and are only to be discovered underlying what are deemed the important events of life, more by inference than from anything that is actually written about them. This conglomerate history of the lives of the dames of Mana-ha-ta has been compiled with infinite difficulty, owing to the scanty data that have been preserved concerning them. It was customary to destroy all letters that dealt with family life, particularly anything concerning the women of the family, as if in their lives and daily occupations there was something to be ashamed of. Volumes of letters and trunks full of bundles of old papers have been preserved in many families, tut in all these that I have laboriously studied, I have not found more than about a dozen written by women; but those mere fifed with interesting details, and mere far more valuable to the historian than those of the men of the day. which were on dry business affairs that might have been of importance at the time, but are of no value now, and mate one wonder why they were preserved Among them are sometimes prozvking references to family affairs that excite the curiosity without gratifying it, although there must have been as much to say of the women of the past as there is of the women of the present or of the future. The life of the "Goede Vrouw of Mana-ha-ta" was written between the lines of contemporaneous history; I have merely taken the liberty of placing her in the foreground with the men of the day in shadow as her background thereby throwing her into strong relief, instead of (as is usually done) reversing the process....
