Statistics Canada conducts many of its survey-taking and data-processing activities through a geographically dispersed network of 8 Regional Offices. In 1986, quite apart from the Census on June 3, the Regional Offices were responsible for some 65 surveys through the efforts of 1,500 interviewers. The management of decentralized resources for ongoing survey programs, compared to large short-term efforts such as a Census, places unique demands on the regional organization. While some common threads such as management information link both operational challenges, different techniques, approaches and financial controls are employed by Statistics Canada which may be instructive to similar survey-taking organizations.
