The Portable Steinbeck

The Portable Steinbeck
He wrote about poor people struggling to survive and about dispossessed people grappling for a piece of land they could call their own. He wrote about inarticulate men groping to express truths "locked in wordlessness." He wrote about America-the land and the people-as though it were one living organism, and he did so more eloquently than anyone since Walt Whitman. In an extraordinarily prolific career that lasted from 1929 to the 1960s, John Steinbeck created stories and characters that, in the words of Pascal Covici, Jr., this volume''s editor, combine "the gusto of Homer ... along with the thoughtfulness of Emerson." The Portable Steinbeck is a grand sampling of this writer''s most important works. Here are the complete novels Of Mice and Men and The Red Pony together with self-contained excerpts from The Long Valley, Tortilla Flat, In Dubious Battle (celebrated as "America''s best strike novel"), The Grapes of Wrath, his epic of the Okie migration of the Great Depression, Cannery Row, East of Eden, Travels with Charley and other books; two previously uncollected short stories; and the 1962 Nobel Prize Acceptance Speech. The result is a collection that overflows with Steinbeck''s prodigal richness of language, humor that is by turns broad and deadpan sly, and empathy for even the most flawed and suffering of his characters.

Burning Bright

release date: Aug 16, 2022
Burning Bright
In ''Burning Bright'', John Steinbeck embarks on an experimental journey, departing from his signature naturalism to explore the boundaries of allegorical drama. The narrative pivots around Joe Saul, a man grappling with issues of fertility and legacy, whose personal tragedy becomes a universal parable. Steinbeck''s use of fluid settings and a chorus-like ensemble of characters challenges traditional storytelling, while the terse dialogue and symbolic resonance bear the essence of a morality play. This literary context harks back to the expressionism of earlier twentieth-century literature yet comes suffused with Steinbeck''s acute social awareness and empathy for human suffering. Renowned for his vivid chronicling of the quintessential American experience, Steinbeck infuses ''Burning Bright'' with elements from his larger oeuvre: the keen examination of personal and existential conflicts. His fascination with people''s resilience in the face of adversity—evident in masterpieces like ''The Grapes of Wrath'' and ''Of Mice and Men''—here transmutes into a focused, staged intensity. This work emerges from Steinbeck''s ceaseless experimentation with form and his desire to transcend the novel genre, an ambition reflective of a career-long interrogation of the human condition. ''Burning Bright'' thus stands as a testament to Steinbeck''s versatility and his relentless pursuit of literary innovation. It is recommended not only for devotees of Steinbeck''s work but for all who seek a novel that defies strict categorization, blending the trenchancy of drama with the scope of narrative fiction. Readers will find in this edition a stirring confluence of art and humanism, a work that despite its departure from the conventional, retains the indelible mark of Steinbeck''s masterful storytelling.

Travels with Charley in Search of America
A collectible 50th anniversary deluxe edition featuring an updated introduction by Jay Parini and first edition cover art and illustrated maps of Steinbeck’s route by Don Freeman A Penguin Classic In September 1960, John Steinbeck embarked on a journey across America. He felt that he might have lost touch with the country, with its speech, the smell of its grass and trees, its color and quality of light, the pulse of its people. To reassure himself, he set out on a voyage of rediscovery of the American identity, accompanied by a distinguished French poodle named Charley; and riding in a three-quarter-ton pickup truck named Rocinante. His course took him through almost forty states: northward from Long Island to Maine; through the Midwest to Chicago; onward by way of Minnesota, North Dakota, Montana (with which he fell in love), and Idaho to Seattle, south to San Francisco and his birthplace, Salinas; eastward through the Mojave, New Mexico, Arizona, to the vast hospitality of Texas, to New Orleans and a shocking drama of desegregation; finally, on the last leg, through Alabama, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey to New York. Travels with Charley in Search of America is an intimate look at one of America''s most beloved writers in the later years of his life—a self-portrait of a man who never wrote an explicit autobiography. Written during a time of upheaval and racial tension in the South—which Steinbeck witnessed firsthand—Travels with Charley is a stunning evocation of America on the eve of a tumultuous decade. This Penguin Classics Deluxe Edition also features French flaps and deckle-edged paper. Of Mice and Men and The Moon Is Down
Two devastating short novels adapted for the stage by Steinbeck himself A Penguin Classic This Penguin Classics edition celebrates Steinbeck’s dramatic adaptations of his most powerful short novels, Of Mice and Men and The Moon Is Down, featuring a foreword by award-winning actor James Earl Jones. Of Mice and Men represents an experiment in form – as Steinbeck put it, “a kind of playable novel, written in novel form but so scened and set that it can be played as it stands.” A rarity in American letters, it achieved remarkable success as a novel, a Broadway play, and three acclaimed films. Of Mice and Men received the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award for Best Play in 1937-1938. A number of acclaimed actors have interpreted the iconic roles of George and Lennie for stage and screen, including James Earl Jones, John Malkovich and Gary Sinise. The Moon Is Down uncovers profound, often unsettling truths about war and human nature. It tells the story of a peaceable town taken by enemy troops, and had an extraordinary impact as Allied propaganda in Nazi-occupied Europe. This Penguin Classics edition of the theatrical adaptations of Steinbeck’s two classic short novels is essential to actors, playwrights, filmmakers and directors studying the dramatic work of the Nobel Prize winning author of The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden. For more than seventy years, Penguin has been the leading publisher of classic literature in the English-speaking world. With more than 1,700 titles, Penguin Classics represents a global bookshelf of the best works throughout history and across genres and disciplines. The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights

The Acts of King Arthur and His Noble Knights
The first book John Steinbeck read as a child was the Caxton "Morte d''Arthur," and he considered it one of the most challenging tasks of his career to modernize the stories of King Arthur. "These stories are alive even in those of us who have not read them. And, in our day, we are perhaps impatient with the words and the stately rhythms of Malory. I wanted to set the stories down in meaning as they were written, leaving out nothing and adding nothing." Also included are the letters John Steinbeck wrote to his literary agent, Elizabeth Otis, and to Chase Horton, the editor of this volume, about his work on "King Arthur,"

Homes i ratolins

Journal of a Novel

Journal of a Novel
Each working day from January 29 to November 1, 1951, John Steinbeck warmed up to the work of writing East of Eden with a letter to the late Pascal Covici, his friend and editor at The Viking Press. It was his way, he said, of "getting my mental arm in shape to pitch a good game." Steinbeck''s letters were written on the left-hand pages of a notebook in which the facing pages would be filled with the test of East of Eden . They touched on many subjects-story arguments, trial flights of worknamship, concern for his sons. Part autobiography, part writer''s workshop, these letters offer an illuminating perspective on Steinbeck''s creative process, and a fascinating glimpse of Steinbeck, the private man.

John Steinbeck Cannery Row

John Steinbeck Cannery Row
Cannery Row is a novel by American author John Steinbeck, published in 1945.It is set during the Great Depression in Monterey, California, on a street lined with sardine canneries that is known as Cannery Row. The story revolves around the people living there: Lee Chong, the local grocer; Doc, a marine biologist; and Mack, the leader of a group of derelict people. Cannery Row has a simple premise: Mack and his friends are to do something nice for their friend Doc, who has been good to them without asking for reward. Mack hits on the idea that they should throw a thank-you party, and the entire community quickly becomes involved. Unfortunately, the party rages out of control, and Doc''s lab and home are ruined-and so is Doc''s mood. In an effort to return to Doc''s good graces, Mack and the boys decide to throw another party-but make it work this time. A procession of linked vignettes describes the denizens'' lives on Cannery Row. These constitute subplots that unfold concurrently with the main plot. Steinbeck revisited these characters and this milieu nine years later in his novel Sweet Thursday.
