As governments and private companies from emerging markets have increasingly issued foreign-currency denominated debt through the 1990s, the economies concerned have become more vulnerable to abrupt changes in sovereign risk. At the same time, with closer economic integration countries have become more likely to be affected by economic problems in neighboring countries. The following article uses the example of four Latin American countries to evaluate the extent to which contagion explains sovereign risk.

Natural resource booms have differentiated employment dynamics once gender is considered. With this caveat in mind, we analyze the effect of mining booms in local labor markets where historically gender roles have undermined women's participation and have marked gender roles regarding the women's role in the household. Our results suggest that most of the job creation is driven by increases in male employment, predominantly in the mining sector, and indirectly in construction and local services brought by mining. Our results suggest the mining boom has increased men's and non-married women's job opportunities but decreased for those women married or with children at home. As the gender gaps seem to increase, women who exit the labor market are those who have a high workload at home. Our findings highlight the importance of the care economy and gender relations in shaping the labor outcomes of men and women.

Cool roofs may reduce the temperature of a surface exposed to the sun and decrease the energy consumption inside buildings. This type of technology works under two different principles; solar reflectance and thermal emissivity and there is a wide variety of products in the market with different initial and aged reflectance and emissivity values. Reflectance is the fraction of solar energy that is reflected by the roof, and this value decreases with the years. Roofs with high reflectance and low aged reflectance are currently the most common scenario. Thus, cool roof technologies are not attractive in different regions under those conditions. By selecting the cities with the most solar radiation in the U.S.A. and those with rebates and incentives available and approved by the Cool Roof Rating Council, simulations were run to determine energy savings when using high albedo cool roof technologies when compare with albedo values fewer than 70%. Results show a significant difference between the values of solar reflectance and suggest supporting the application of high albedo coatings for substantial energy savings.

This paper investigates the impact of alternative economic opportunities for the youth in consolidating positive peace. Using data from randomized control trial from a cash-for-work program for unskilled youngsters, with no opportunities in the labor market, we capture the causal effect of employment on social cohesion and trust in institutions in post-conflict Cote d'Ivoire. We estimate the short term and midterm impacts of the program from a sample of 4,160 youngsters randomly drawn including 3,125 beneficiaries and 1,035 in the control group in 16 municipalities nationwide. We also include in the analysis the prediction of youth behavior in favor of peace conditional to their participation in the program by running a LASSO model. In the short term, participation in the program decreases the odds to trust out-community youth by 29% and the odds to trust colleagues by 16%. In the long term, having a paid-job significantly increases the likelihood to attend community meeting by 20%, trust in family members by 17% and trust in colleagues by 25%. Further, participation in the program is found to significantly predict behavior to peace. Lastly, while training in entrepreneurship negatively predict social cohesion, training in paid-job positively predict attitude to peace.
