Dick Sand; Or, a Captain at Fifteen (Dodo Press)
Jules Gabriel Verne (1828-1905) was a French author who pioneered the science-fiction genre. He is best known for novels such as Journey to the Centre of the Earth (1864), Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea (1870), and Around the World in Eighty Days (1873). Verne wrote about space, air and underwater travel before air travel and practical submarines were invented, and before practical means of space travel had been devised. He is the third most translated author in the world, according to Index Translationum. Some of his books have been made into films. Verne, along with Hugo Gernsback and H. G. Wells, is often popularly referred to as the "Father of Science Fiction." Amongst his other works are From the Earth to the Moon (1867), Five Weeks in a Balloon (1869), The Fur Country; or, Seventy Degrees North Latitude (1873), The Blockade Runners (1874), The Field of Ice (1875), The Mysterious Island (1875), Facing the Flag (1879), and An Antarctic Mystery (1899).

Michael Strogoff; or the Courier of the Czar
Originally published in French in 1867, Michael Strogoff, or, the Courier of the Czar, is regarded as one of Jules Verne’s greatest novels. This intriguing tale set in Russia tells the story of one man, Michael Strogoff, the Czar’s courier, who is set out on an impossible mission to save his country. A traitor inspires the dangerous Feofar Khan to invade Siberia and form a rebellion, leading to a plot to kill the czar’s brother, the Grand Duke. As a result, Strogoff is sent out to warn the Duke, serving as the nation’s last hope to cease the rebellion. Along the way he meets new people, makes new friends and gets capture by the enemy, only to make a grand escape. Readers are sure to be at the edge of their seats as they follow the courier’s adventures through Siberia. Though this book is not one of the many science-fiction books that Verne is so highly regarded for, it utilizes the scientific phenomenon as a major plot device, allowing readers to nevertheless enjoy his profound literary voice and follow the protagonist on an unforgettable adventure. "Jules Verne''s imagination has given us some of the greatest adventure stories of all time" —Daily Mail “The reason Verne is still read by millions today is simply that he was one of the best storytellers who ever lived.”—Arthur C. Clarke “This edition of what symbolically and psychoanalytically must be his richest text will, however, do much to encourage a more just appreciation…”—The Modern Language Review on Journey to the Center of the Earth by Jules Verne Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade, Yucca, and Good Books imprints, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in fiction—novels, novellas, political and medical thrillers, comedy, satire, historical fiction, romance, erotic and love stories, mystery, classic literature, folklore and mythology, literary classics including Shakespeare, Dumas, Wilde, Cather, and much more. While not every title we publish becomes a New York Times bestseller or a national bestseller, we are committed to books on subjects that are sometimes overlooked and to authors whose work might not otherwise find a home.

"Dick Sand; or, A Captain at Fifteen" captivates readers with its blend of action, suspense, and thought-provoking themes. Jules Verne''s storytelling prowess shines through as he crafts a narrative that balances thrilling escapades with insightful reflections on leadership, ethics, and the potential for heroism in unexpected circumstances. The novel remains a testament to the indomitable spirit of youth and the boundless potential that lies within us all, regardless of age.

Dr. Ox's Experiment
Dr. Ox wants to introduce a new gas lighting system in a small Flemish town. Free of charge. However something does not add up. Solely because Dr. Ox’s goal is not as philanthropic as it seems. He conducts secret experiments on the effect of oxygen on all living creatures. The outcome is most certainly not expected. What goes wrong in his project? Do people realize what a madman they have let in their town? Will Dr. Ox get what he deserves or he will manage to get away with it? The answer lies in Jules Verne’s short science-fiction novel from 1874 "Dr. Ox''s Experiment". Jules Verne (1828-1905) was a French novelist who mostly wrote adventure fiction inspired by the scientific advances of the 19th century. With the help of editor Pierre-Jules Hetzel he wrote a series of books called "Extraordinary Travels", which includes "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1864), "Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea" (1870), and "Around the World in Eighty Days" (1873). Widely popular with both children and adults, Verne is one of the most translated authors of all times, and still inspires people the world over.

(Michael Strogoff; or, The Courier of the Czar by Jules Verne)(1876)는 19세기 러시아 이르쿠츠크(Irkutsk)를 배경으로 하는 역사 소설(Historical novel)로 경이의 여행(The Voyages extraordinaires)의 일부입니다. (The Courier of the Czar)는 이 같은 상황에서 유래한 것입니다. ▶ CHAPTER III. MICHAEL STROGOFF MEETS THE CZAR. In a few moments Michael Strogoff, the courier, entered the imperial library. He was a tall, vigorous, broad-shouldered, deep-chested man. His powerful head possessed the fine features of the Caucasian race. His well-knit frame seemed built for the performance of feats of strength. It would have been a difficult task to move such a man against his will, for when his feet were once planted on the ground, it was as if they had taken root. As he doffed his Muscovite cap, locks of thick curly hair fell over his broad, massive forehead. When his ordinarily pale face became at all flushed, it arose solely from a more rapid action of the heart. His eyes, of a deep blue, looked with clear, frank, firm gaze. The slightly-contracted eyebrows indicated lofty heroism—“the hero’s cool courage,” according to the definition of the physiologist. He possessed a fine nose, with large nostrils; and a well-shaped mouth, with the slightly-projecting lips which denote a generous and noble heart. ▶ CHAPTER XV. CONCLUSION. MICHAEL STROGOFF was not, had never been, blind. A purely human phenomenon, at the same time moral and physical, had neutralized the action of the incandescent blade which Feofar’s executioner had passed before his eyes. It may be remembered, that at the moment of the execution, Marfa Strogoff was present, stretching out her hands towards her son. Michael gazed at her as a son would gaze at his mother, when it is for the last time. The tears, which his pride in vain endeavored to subdue, welling up from his heart, gathered under his eyelids, and volatilizing on the cornea, had saved his sight. The vapor formed by his tears interposing between the glowing saber and his eyeballs, had been sufficient to annihilate the action of the heat. A similar effect is produced, when a workman smelter, after dipping his hand in vapor, can with impunity hold it over a stream of melted iron. From the Earth to the Moon : Direct in Ninety-Seven Hours and Twenty Minutes and a Trip Round It

From the Earth to the Moon : Direct in Ninety-Seven Hours and Twenty Minutes and a Trip Round It
From the Earth to the Moon : Direct in Ninety-Seven Hours and Twenty Minutes and a Trip Round It This book include Jules Verne’s biography and his works. From the Earth to the Moon is an 1865 novel by Jules Verne. It tells the story of the Baltimore Gun Club, a post-American Civil War society of weapons aficionados, and their attempts to build an enormous sky-facing Columbiad space gun and launch three people — the Gun Club''s president, his Philadelphian armor-making rival, and a French poet — in a projectile with the goal of a moon landing. An old enemy of Barbicane, a Captain Nicholl of Philadelphia, designer of plate armor, declares that the enterprise is absurd and makes a series of bets with Barbicane, each of them of increasing amount over the impossibility of such feat. During a meeting between Ardan, the Gun Club, and the inhabitants of Florida, Nicholl appears and challenges Barbicane to a duel. The duel is stopped when Ardan—having been warned by J. T. Maston, secretary of the Gun Club—meets the rivals in the forest where they have agreed to duel. Meanwhile, Barbicane finds the solution to the problem of surviving the incredible acceleration that the explosion would cause. Ardan suggests that Barbicane and Nicholl travel with him in the projectile, and the offer is accepted. In the end, the projectile is successfully launched, but the destinies of the three astronauts are left inconclusive. The sequel, Around the Moon, deals with what happens to the three men in their travel from the earth to the moon.

Two Years' Vacation
What about an unexpected two years’ vacation on a desert island? It may sound appealing from nowadays perspective. But when a marooned ship drifts to sea with nobody but a group of young boys on board, things does not seem as promising as expected. The ship is caught by a storm and the boys end up on an unknown island. They will either adapt and learn how to survive or they will die. When it seems like their fate is predetermined after two years on the island, they notice a passing ship. Is this their way out or they will find themselves in even bigger threat? Jules Verne takes us on yet another sea journey with the adventure novel "Two Years'' Vacation". It is a story about bravery, flexibility and intelligence by which Verne seeks to show everybody that everything is possible if you have strong will and perseverance.

Around the World in Eighty Days by Jules Verne: Illustrated and Annotated Edition
Phileas Fogg never misses a beat (we''re talking seconds on the clock here rather than moves on the dance floor). He''s punctual, practical, and more than a bit obsessed with Father Time. Being a lonely bachelor in an old mansion in London doesn''t seem to bother him, though. With the peace and quiet he is able to contemplate the more important things in life, like having his shaving water brought to him at the exact same temperature each day, or calculating precisely how many steps there are between his gentleman''s club and his front door. Yeah... awesome... OCD aside, Phileas Fogg has two passions: playing whist and being right. So when a debate between his homies at the club arises about how long it would take to travel around the world, he dismissively states that of course it could be accomplished in eighty days. With much scoffing and bwa-ha-ha-ing, his friends politely tell him he''s off his rocker. It''s 1872 after all. But Phileas sets down a bet and calls them out. He wagers 20,000 pounds (his entire fortune) that he can do it. And because rich dudes in London have nothing better to do, they all agree to the bet. Meanwhile, a suspicious looking "gentleman" has robbed the Bank of England. Oddly enough, he kind of sort of looks like Phileas Fogg--oh, and he has that reserved, subdued quality which totally identifies him as a gentleman. Hmm... now said gentleman is looking to quickly leave the country. Detective Fix, a police officer from Scotland Yard (like the British FBI) is now on the case to pursue and arrest Phileas Fogg for burglary, but he has to catch him first.

All Around the Moon (Illustrated)
Having been fired out of the giant Columbiad space gun, the Baltimore Gun Club''s bullet-shaped projectile, along with its three passengers, Barbicane, Nicholl and Michael Ardan, begins the five-day trip to the Moon. A few minutes into the journey, a small, bright asteroid passes within a few hundred yards of them, but does not collide with the projectile. The asteroid had been captured by the Earth''s gravity and had become a second moon. The three travelers undergo a series of adventures and misadventures during the rest of the journey, including disposing of the body of a dog out a window, suffering intoxication by gases, and making calculations leading them, briefly, to believe that they are to fall back to Earth. During the latter part of the voyage, it becomes apparent that the gravitational force of their earlier encounter with the asteroid has caused the projectile to deviate from its course. The projectile enters lunar orbit, rather than landing on the Moon as originally planned. Barbicane, Ardan and Nicholl begin geographical observations with opera glasses. The projectile then dips over the northern hemisphere of the Moon, into the darkness of its shadow. It is plunged into extreme cold, before emerging into the light and heat again. They then begin to approach the Moon''s southern hemisphere. From the safety of their projectile, they gain spectacular views of Tycho, one of the greatest of all craters on the Moon. The three men discuss the possibility of life on the Moon, and conclude that it is barren. The projectile begins to move away from the Moon, towards the ''dead point'' (the place at which the gravitational attraction of the Moon and Earth becomes equal). Michel Ardan hits upon the idea of using the rockets fixed to the bottom of the projectile (which they were originally going to use to deaden the shock of landing) to propel the projectile towards the Moon and hopefully cause it to fall onto it, thereby achieving their mission. When the projectile reaches the point of neutral attraction, the rockets are fired, but it is too late. The projectile begins a fall onto the Earth from a distance of 260,000 kilometres (160,000 mi), and it is to strike the Earth at a speed of 185,400 km/h (115,200 mph), the same speed at which it left the mouth of the Columbiad. All hope seems lost for Barbicane, Nicholl and Ardan. Four days later, the crew of a US Navy vessel, Susquehanna, spots a bright meteor fall from the sky into the sea. This turns out to be the returning projectile. A rescue operation is assembled, intending to raise the capsule from a depth of 20,000 feet, using diving bells and steam-powered grappling claws. After several days of fruitless searches, all hope is lost and the rescue party heads home. On the way back, a lookout spots a strange shining buoy. Only then the rescuers realize that the hollow alluminium projectile had positive buoyancy and thus must have surfaced after impact. The ''buoy'' turns out to be the projectile and three men inside are found to be alive and well. They are treated to lavish homecoming celebrations as the first people to leave Earth.

Around the World in 80 Days
The story begins at England. We are introduced to Fogg, a very precise man who regularly goes to the Reform Club every evening. At one such visit to the club to play cards, he gets into a conversation with his fellow card players as to whether it is possible to go around the world in eighty days. He believes that it is and is challenged to complete the adventure. This is the beginning of the entire plot and from then on we see how Fogg goes around the world and we witness the amazing adventures that he has with his companions. The main plot is based on Fogg''s travels, while other such plots merely support the central theme Fix, the detective follows Fogg all over. He believes that Fogg is the bank robber who has robbed a great sum from the bank of England. He puts obstacles in Fogg''s path just so that he can arrest him whenever he gets the warrant from England. The suspicion that Fogg might be a clever gentleman robber is the sub-theme of the book and the author makes the reader also suspicious. Passepartout too wonders whether his master might be a robber though in his heart he has ample trust in Fogg''s integrity. The plot moves ahead with Fogg striving through various obstacles to reach London in time. He goes through Brindisi, Suez, Bombay, Calcutta, Hong Kong, Yokohama, San Francisco, New York and finally Liverpool. Fix arrests Fogg at Liverpool and this delays our hero. He thinks that he has missed the deadline and hasn''t reached London in time when in reality he reached a full day earlier. Thus Fogg wins the wager and in the course of his travels, finds himself a worthy charming, beautiful wife too.
