This thesis sets out to confront drug and alcohol abuse by American servicemen during the Vietnam War, previously defying in depth historical analysis. New oral histories available within the last few years have shed new light on a previously elusive subject. This research explores the various and often conflicting interpretations of the Battle of Horseshoe Bend, an event seemingly lost in the public mind of twenty-first century America. The conflict, which pitted United States forces under the command of Major General Andrew Jackson against a militant offshoot of the Creek Confederacy, known as the Redsticks, ranks as the single most staggering loss of life in annals of American Indian warfare. Today, exactly 200 years after the conflict, the legacy of Horseshoe Bend stands as an obscure and often unheard of event. Drawing upon over two centuries of unpublished archival data, newspapers, and political propaganda, this research argues that the dominate narrative of Northern history, the shadowy details of the War of 1812, and the erasure of shameful events from the legacy of westward expansion have all contributed to transform what once was a battle of epic proportions, described by Jackson himself as an "extermination," into a seemingly forgotten affair.

In this dissertation, I examine the determinants of presidential responsiveness to public opinion, employing a theory of context and venue that explains why presidents are more responsive at some times and in certain policy making venues than at other times and in other venues. To test this theory, I create a new direct measure of presidential responsiveness to public opinion, a measure that quantifies the ideological distance between presidential policy positions and public policy preferences. I develop versions of this measure in four important venues of the modern presidency: relations with the U.S. Congress and the U.S. Supreme Court, the unilateral administrative presidency, and the president''s rhetoric. Using time-series regression techniques, I analyze the influence that factors such as political context, electoral context, institutional context, and venue visibility have on the dynamics of presidential responsiveness scores. The results indicate that although the president''s policy position taking responds to public opinion dynamics, there is no clear contextual factor that conditions this responsiveness.

Early planting soybean (Glycine max L.) strategies across the mid-southern United States has complicated weed management in the form of post-harvest weed control. Research has investigated the use of cover crops to aid in management of weed populations during winter months, but conventional cover crops provides minimal weed management benefit immediately following cash crop harvest. Inter-seeding cover crop into crop canopies has potential to promote earlier cover crop establishment, thus creating higher potential for post-harvest weed management. However, factors such as inter-seeding timing, herbicide residue, as well as harvest aid applications must be considered. Therefore, studies were conducted in Mississippi in 2017, 2018, and 2019 to determine if cover crops inter-seeded through soybean could improve weed control used in conjunction with common management strategies in Mississippi production systems. Conclusions drawn from these studies indicate inter-seeded cover crops can be utilized in soybean production systems to improve weed management after harvest.

This study explored how unaccompanied refugee minors (URMs) define success. The population of URMs consists of individuals who, through forced migration from their country of origin, were resettled in the United States through the URM program. Little is known about the ways in which refugee adolescents view the resettlement process once they have left the URM program. Through a traditional grounded theory method, 15 interviews with former URMs were conducted with the aim of laying the groundwork for a theory that would explain how success is defined, the unique challenges URMs face, the mechanisms for overcoming challenges, and the role that culture plays in the resettlement process.

Expanded beyond this film and into Kubrick’s corpus altogether, his films largely display an emphasis on the psychological impacts they have over spectators. More specifically, Kubrick’s films have been described as cold cinematic texts that resist emotional engagement (Kolker, “Rage for Order” 60; Freer 114). Consider 2001’s Stargate sequence --in which a series of chromatic images appear onscreen at random with no obvious narrative purpose or explanation --as exemplary of the emotional estrangement underlying Kubrick’s films. Conventional narrative cinema provides clear-cut narratives that allow méconnaissance (or misrecognition) to occur in the cinema, during which spectators immerse themselves into the film’s narrative verisimilitude; but Kubrick’s films resist this by thwarting such expectations --as is evident in the convoluted Stargate sequence --to create an alienating aesthetic unique to the Kubrickian corpus. Psychologically, Kubrick’s cinema alienates spectators from identifying with his narratives, which consequently thwarts emotional identification from spectators. In order to theorize this trend from a psychoanalytical perspective, I explore the convergence of two conflicting Lacanian film theories --an earlier version which resists méconnaissance and the latter version which alternatively requests that theorists use misrecognition to observe moments when their immersion is disrupted --occurring throughout Kubrick’s films. There is a marked discordance between conventional narrative structures and Kubrick’s deconstruction of them, one which shall be explored in this thesis to illustrate the various ways in which Kubrick’s alienating aesthetic is manifested, particularly in A Clockwork Orange, Eyes Wide Shut, and 2001: A Space Odyssey"-- from abstract.
