The researcher conducted a phenomenological study investigating the lifestyle and well-being of people who have been diagnosed with celiac disease or gluten intolerance after age 13. Eight female and two male participants diagnosed with gluten intolerance or celiac disease were asked questions regarding how their diagnoses impacted their lives socially, emotionallly, mentally, physically, beneficially, and adversarely. Additionally, they were asked to create an art piece based on their feelings towards their diagoses. The research answered the same questions and complete the art task to analyze and compare her own feelings toward her diagnosis of severe gluten intolerance. Common themes of adverse effects prior to and post diagnosis were discovered through evaluating art pieces and interview answers. These themes included anxiety, feeling misunderstood and left out, frustration, depression, fatigue, and their overall symptoms. The researcher has also found themes of beneficial impacts on their lives post diagnosis. These included increased involvement in medical care, decreased mental health sympotoms of depression or anxiety, and decrease of adverse syptomology. Other common themes occurred within social, emotional, mental, and physical aspects of their lives. The findings encouraged future research in this area to increase understanding for mental health professionals, medical practitioners, and social systems, in addition to further empower this population.
