Young people worldwide are participating in ever-increasing numbers in online fan communities. Far from mere shallow repositories of pop culture, these sites are accumulating significant evidence that sophisticated informal learning is taking place online in novel and unexpected ways. In order to understand and analyze in more detail how learning might be occurring, we conducted an in-depth nine-month ethnographic investigation of online fanfiction communities, including participant observation and fanfiction author interviews. Our observations led to the development of a theory we term distributed mentoring, which we present in detail in this paper. Distributed mentoring exemplifies one instance of how networked technology affords new extensions of behaviors that were previously bounded by time and space. Distributed mentoring holds potential for application beyond the spontaneous mentoring observed in this investigation and may help students receive diverse, thoughtful feedback in formal learning environments as well.

In this chapter, we explore the centrality of trust in today''s society, with a particular focus on trust in political and civic leaders. We begin with a review of the theoretical work on trust in order to identify its key dimensions. Following this review, we discuss the role that trust plays in a democratic society, including economic, civic, and political life. In this discussion, we consider the relationship between trust and two related concepts, trustworthiness and distrust. In the following section, we explore the roots of trust by examining how young people conceive of and use trust in their daily lives, particularly when they judge the trustworthiness of public leaders. We consider the implications of this exploration with respect to the role of trust in democratic society.

In this chapter, the authors explore the role that networked platforms play in identity development during emerging adulthood. They use the stories of two youth to highlight dominant themes from existing research and to examine the developmental implications of forming one''s identity in a networked era. The inquiry is theoretically informed by the work of the psychologist Erik Erikson, who depicted identity development as a process of exploration that ultimately results in a sense of personal continuity and coherence. The authors consider what insights this theory -- formulated in the mid-twentieth century -- has to offer in a digital world. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the practical implications relating to education, policy, and the design of new technologies.

Stress affects human beings on a daily basis. Studies conducted by Strecker (2004), Burton and Hinton (2004), and Gill (1985) as well as others, have suggested that stress can be a cause of common illness and affect thought processes and actions. While stress has been researched at length, there is a lack of information examining the relationship between perceived stress levels and exercise. Using Sister Callista Roy''s Adaptation Model, this study examined stress levels and exercise in graduate nursing students (Roy & Andrews 1999). This descriptive study used a convenience sample of 30 subjects. The subjects were enrolled either part-time or full-time. The student''s perceived stress levels were measured using The Perceived Stress Scale (Cohen & Williamson 1988) measures the individual''s ideas and thoughts about certain situations in their lives. The demographic information collected included: age, gender, part-time or full-time status in graduate school, employment status, caring for a dependent (child, or elderly person), minutes per week of exercise, race, and family/marital status. The data showed that few students exercised regularly, and there was not a significant decrease in stress levels for those students who participated in exercise at least three days per week.

According to Wolfe (2001), the idea of moral freedom is here to stay. It is not a simple matter to repeal a freedom once it has been embraced by the majority of society. The challenge, Wolfe argues, is to strike a balance between the authority of tradition and the authority of the individual. As our discussion of young people''s self-fabrications suggests, finding such balance entails considering the consequences of one''s actions as they relate to the well-being of the self, others, and society. We--parents, educators, the media, and community leaders--face the task of promoting young people''s awareness of the people and institutions that can be affected by their actions. Of course, this effort begins with our own actions. We must model responsible self-representations if we expect young people to exercise responsibility themselves.Active intervention may well be warranted (Rimer, 2008). With our colleagues on the GoodWork Project, we have devised an educational curriculum that encourages young people to reflect on their roles and responsibilities as they make decisions about the way to conduct their lives in various contexts, including school and work. The GoodWork toolkit comprises several ethical dilemmas that emerged during out interviews with aspiring and young professionals. Allison''s story is included as an example of one aspiring professional''s decision to postpone ethical considerations until she had “made it” in today''s competitive, market-driven environment (Fischman, Solomon, Greenspan, and Gardner, 2004). The toolkit also includes a variety of activities and discussion prompts that educators can use to encourage their students to think critically about the dilemmas and make connections to their personal goals and values.The toolkit is currently being piloted in a number of high schools and universities in the United States. We are also participating in several college courses, such as the one described at the beginning of this paper, on pursuing meaningful work, meaningful citizenship, and a meaningful life. Through these endeavors, we hope to refine an educational curriculum that encourages tomorrow''s citizens and workers to pursue their goals in a way that not only benefits them person- ally, but also serves the interests of the broader society. An important part of our work involves developing in our students an appreciation for the difference between a self-fabrication that rings true and one that is, quite simply, false.

Hun møtte mennesker med sterke behov, og visste at hun var nødt til å komme tilbake. Hun velger å flytte fra hjemlandet USA og bosette seg permanent i Uganda.
