The Religious Art of Zen Master Hakuin

release date: Dec 01, 2010
The Religious Art of Zen Master Hakuin
A charismatic and extraordinary Zen teacher and artist, Hakuin (1686–1769) is credited with almost single–handedly reforming and revitalizing Japanese Zen from a state of extreme spiritual decline. As a teacher, he placed special emphasis on koan practice, inventing new koans such as the famous "What is the sound of one hand clapping?" He also stressed the need to extend the benefits of Zen to others. What made Hakuin even more remarkable was that he was not only a religious teacher but also a prolific artist. Using calligraphy and painting to create "visual Dharma," his teachings were rendered on paper in pictures, characters, and images, uniquely and magnificently expressing the nature of enlightenment as he wished to impart it to his students. The Religious Art of Zen Master Hakuin is a stunning volume containing many of Hakuin''s finest calligraphies and paintings, along with brilliant commentary by Katsuhiro Yoshizawa, the leading Japanese expert on Hakuin and his work. Yoshizawa masterfully guides the reader from one piece of artwork to the next, sharing the story of Hakuin''s life, revealing the profound religious meaning embedded in each illustration, and providing a detailed documentary of the lessons of one of Zen''s most respected teachers.

Activity Theory and Collaborative Intervention in Education

release date: Feb 22, 2021
Activity Theory and Collaborative Intervention in Education
By applying cultural-historical activity theory and expansive learning theory to educational research, this volume illuminates new forms of educational activities as collaborative interventions in schools and communities where learners and practitioners generate expansive learning so that they can collectively transform their activities and expand their agency for themselves. It covers four cases of activity-theoretical formative intervention studies conducted in Japan, which are related to: fostering children’s expansive learning in classroom lessons; teachers as collaborative change agents in redesigning schools; expanding the school activity from below; and emerging knotworking agency in community-based disaster prevention learning. This book employs activity theory as a general theoretical framework of human learning and development to connect focal data from empirical and interventional studies on real human learning in specific educational settings in Japan. In this way, the book illustrates how the general theoretical framework could be used to understand a specific socio-cultural milieu, that is, the Japanese context. It also shows the universal relevance of the Japanese context of educational activity on broader international research, analyzing concrete empirical data from specific settings in Japan. In conclusion this book creates new understanding and develops a cohesive framework of the agentic and hybrid nature of educational activities as collaborative interventions in the expansion of learning.

Algorithms for Fuzzy Clustering

Algorithms for Fuzzy Clustering
Recently many researchers are working on cluster analysis as a main tool for exploratory data analysis and data mining. A notable feature is that specialists in di?erent ?elds of sciences are considering the tool of data clustering to be useful. A major reason is that clustering algorithms and software are ?exible in thesensethatdi?erentmathematicalframeworksareemployedinthealgorithms and a user can select a suitable method according to his application. Moreover clusteringalgorithmshavedi?erentoutputsrangingfromtheolddendrogramsof agglomerativeclustering to more recent self-organizingmaps. Thus, a researcher or user can choose an appropriate output suited to his purpose, which is another ?exibility of the methods of clustering. An old and still most popular method is the K-means which use K cluster centers. A group of data is gathered around a cluster center and thus forms a cluster. The main subject of this book is the fuzzy c-means proposed by Dunn and Bezdek and their variations including recent studies. A main reasonwhy we concentrate on fuzzy c-means is that most methodology and application studies infuzzy clusteringusefuzzy c-means,andfuzzy c-meansshouldbe consideredto beamajortechniqueofclusteringingeneral, regardlesswhetheroneisinterested in fuzzy methods or not. Moreover recent advances in clustering techniques are rapid and we requirea new textbook that includes recent algorithms. We should also note that several books have recently been published but the contents do not include some methods studied herein.

Fuzzy Collaborative Forecasting and Clustering

release date: Jun 14, 2019
Fuzzy Collaborative Forecasting and Clustering
This book introduces the basic concepts of fuzzy collaborative forecasting and clustering, including its methodology, system architecture, and applications. It demonstrates how dealing with disparate data sources is becoming more and more popular due to the increasing spread of internet applications. The book proposes the concepts of collaborative computing intelligence and collaborative fuzzy modeling, and establishes several so-called fuzzy collaborative systems. It shows how technical constraints, security issues, and privacy considerations often limit access to some sources. This book is a valuable source of information for postgraduates, researchers and fuzzy control system developers, as it presents a very effective fuzzy approach that can deal with disparate data sources, big data, and multiple expert decision making.
