The Water Bears
"With warmth and humor, Kim Baker conjures a magical tale of finding the most elusive creature of all: one's true self." --Kirby Larson, author of the New York Times bestseller and Newbery Honor winner Hattie Big Sky and the Audacity Jones series A quirky, empowering story about a boy recovering from a bear attack with the help of his friends and maybe, some magic. For fans of Lemons by Melissa Savage, Unusual Chickens for the Exceptional Poultry Farmer by Kelly Jones, and The Canning Season by Polly Horvath. Newt Gomez has a thing with bears. Last year he survived a bear attack. And this year, he finds an unusual bear statue that just might grant wishes. Newt's best friend, Ethan, notices a wishbone on the statue and decides to make a wish. When it comes true, Newt thinks it's a coincidence. Even as more people wish on the bear and their wishes come true, Newt is not convinced. But Newt has a wish too: while he loves his home on eccentric Murphy Island, he wants to go to middle school on the mainland, where his warm extended family lives. There, he's not the only Latinx kid, he won't have to drive the former taco truck--a gift from his parents--and he won't have to perform in the talent show. Most importantly, on the mainland, he never has bad dreams about the attack. Newt is almost ready to make a secret wish when everything changes. Tackling themes of survival and self-acceptance, Newt's story illuminates the magic in our world, where reality is often uncertain but always full of salvageable wonders.

Girls' Guide to Healthy Dating

release date: Mar 07, 2016
Girls' Guide to Healthy Dating
(black & white version) Kim Baker's groundbreaking lesbian dating guide, Girls' Guide to Healthy Dating: Between the Breakup and the Next U-Haul, answers the age old question we have when we find ourselves single again: Now what? Girls' Guide to Healthy Dating transforms dating from an exasperating pattern of breaking up then U-Hauling rapidly into another relationship to a model for connecting with other women from a place of balance and authenticity. If you're a lesbian who wants to transform dating from a frustrating search for the right one to adventures in getting to know women to identify compatibility, then this book is for you. For ages, women have gathered around restaurant tables with friends to begrudge the perils of dating as a lesbian. We don't know how to date. We relationship hop. We don't process our past relationships. Unlike other dating advice books where a relationship expert imparts knowledge on to the reader, Kim Baker uses a Sex in the City laid back voice to explore six powerful strategies for revolutionizing how we search for the woman of our dreams. Drawn from mindfulness and the law of attraction, Girls' Guide to Healthy Dating unveils what we intuitively already know: if we really want to change our dating experience, we have to change the way we approach dating. By focusing on getting to know women to identify compatibility, we create more healthy dating experiences, are more likely to notice red flags and deal breakers, and ultimately are more likely to find the one. ...Very good advice for any lesbian who has ever had her heart broken and wants to move on to a new life in dating. - Lynda Many of the concepts in the book go beyond lesbian dating. - Jennifer W. I really enjoyed your voice because you showed vulnerability but ultimately come from a position of strength. -Julie P.

Information Literacy and Cultural Heritage

Information Literacy and Cultural Heritage
There is a complex and contested terrain of cultural heritage in the library, archive and museum context. Information Literacy and Cultural Heritage explores this landscape and covers perspectives from museums, archives and libraries, highlighting the role of memory and contested history in the collection, description and presentation of cultural heritage. The book argues that the convergence of libraries, archives and museums in digital preservation should be extended to include the development of combined lifelong learning programmes, teaching both information literacy skills and awareness of cultural heritage. This title is structured into seven chapters, covering cultural heritage in the library, archive and museum context; digital information contexts; an overview of information literacy models of stages and processes, as well as models of standards, competencies and performance indicators. The book then examines the role of critical thinking and lifelong learning; proposes a generic model of information literacy and cultural heritage for lifelong learning; offers guidelines for adapting the model to local contexts; and offers a conclusion. - Covers cultural heritage in the museums, archives and library context - Explores the place of cultural heritage and social issues in the digital information context - Reviews existing models of information literacy processes, standards and indicators

The Illinois River

release date: Sep 27, 2011
The Illinois River
The Illinois River is one of the most beloved and utilized rivers in the state. The natural benefits derived from the river support ecosystems and economies, while providing rich context for the region’s cultural heritage and nourishment for the soul. Unfortunately, the river is at risk. This book aims to shine a bright light on the Illinois River and all the river provides with the goal of inspiring the public to make better-informed decisions about their precious natural resource for the benefit of future generations. While photography is the cornerstone of the book, collaboration was the foundation. A collaboration of Oklahoma photographers and authors committed to this important conservation book designed to use art and important stories to empower environmental conservation. The Illinois River Survey photography book will serve as an important public outreach tool for Save the Illinois River (STIR) and will help bridge the gap between the river and the public. The book is a powerful force for conservation through its ability to influence, inform and inspire. The book begins with a special foreword by Oklahoma river advocate, Drew Edmondson and introduction by Oklahoma author, John Gifford. The book tells the story of the Illinois River and the region through which it flows, beginning with an essay by NSU History Professor, Brad Agnew, who writes about the rich history of the Illinois River. The next essay covers conservation photography, explaining photography’s pivotal role in the history of wilderness conservation and the future of the Illinois River. An essay by Oklahoma author Sheilah Bright narrates the Illinois River Survey event in May of 2011, and delves into the cultural heritage of the Illinois River and the importance of the river to people, local communities and all Oklahomans. The next essay by Priscilla Crawford of the Oklahoma Biological Survey and Natural Areas Registry describes the ecological diversity of the Illinois River watershed; and Mike Fuhr, director of the Oklahoma Nature Conservancy, explains the importance of environmental flows for the biodiversity of the Illinois River ecosystem. May 20 – 22, 2011, a team of Oklahoma photographers together with scientists, land and river managers, water officials, conservationists, and river advocates explored and documented important components of the Illinois River Watershed in a three-day photographic survey. The Survey group focused on the Illinois River’s unique ecological communities, the rivers ecosystems, with an emphasis on the natural services the rivers provides, and the history and unique cultural heritage of the Illinois River to the region, local river communities, and Tahlequah. Compelling photography can make a difference. The goal for the Illinois River Survey: A Visual Record is for the conservation photography book to be a timely and relevant piece of literature that will help the river today, and be a lasting record of the Illinois River for the future.
