The End of Our Exploring
Do we know what it means to question well? We need not fear questions, but by the grace of God, we have the safety and security to rush headlong into them and find ourselves better for it on the other side. Faith isn''t the sort of thing that will endure as long as our eyes are closed. The opposite is the case: Faith helps us see, and that means not shrinking from the ambiguities and the difficulties that provoke our most profound questions. In our embrace of questioning, we must learn to question well. In our uncertainty, we must not give up the task of walking worthy of the calling that Christ has placed upon us. For we have not yet reached the end of our exploring. This book is written to aid you in faithfully questioning your foundations.

P. S. It's Gonna Be Good

release date: Apr 01, 2023
P. S. It's Gonna Be Good
How can I hope for a good future with my bad past? Why them and not me? Why me and not them? What if I just don''t know what to do? In our current climate of rising anxiety, we frequently run through worst-case scenarios. So many questions constantly circulate in our minds, and despite our best intentions and honest efforts, fear seems to be winning. We know the Bible repeats, "Do not fear," but how do we do that? What do we do after we''ve cast our cares on the Lord, memorized Scripture, pumped worship music through every speaker, and yet still feel stuck? In P.S. It''s Gonna Be Good, writer and popular Instagram content creator Heidi Anderson offers a hope-filled response to these questions by using her own journey, as well as pointing us to God''s people who have come before us. In each chapter of her insightful, conversational, and highly relational book, she focuses on a different Bible character as if we were walking behind their footsteps in real time, looking at the deep questions that plagued their minds and hearts--the same questions we face today. We will encounter: Gideon: "What if I don''t have what it takes?" Esther: "What do I do when God feels silent?" Joshua: "What if God''s promises don''t line up with my reality?" Martha: "What about when the worst-case happens?" And more! Join Heidi as she walks us straight into the heart of God''s Word, where we will experience His peace, find confidence in His good plans, and be set free to meet the future we were made for. And P.S. . . . It''s gonna be good.

How to Ask a Good Question

How to Ask a Good Question
What holds you back from asking a question? Do you feel that the question is obvious? Or that the answer will be trite? Do you know the old saying, “There are no stupid questions,” but you secretly believe that, yes, there can be? Matthew Lee Anderson is an author, student, and excellent asker of questions. In this piece, taken from his book, The End of Our Exploring, he examines the makings and breakings of a good question, how questions arise, how to give proper time in answering them, and how to practice and get better at asking and answering questions. Asking questions is one task that is universally performed yet rarely examined. From questions of personal preference (What will I eat for dinner tonight?) to those of a deeper nature (What happens when we die?), this quick guide will provoke you to think more deeply about the questions you ask. Negatively Buoyant Jets in a Cross Flow

Negatively Buoyant Jets in a Cross Flow
"Negatively buoyant jets, or sinking jets, can be observed in many problems of pollutant discharge. Any chemical waste that is heavier than the receiving water into which it is discharged may act as a negatively buoyant jet. In addition, when water is taken from the hypolimnion of a deep lake or reservoir and used as cooling water, the temperature, and consequently, the discharge may behave like a negatively buoyant jet. Two existing jet diffusion models have been utilized to predict the trajectory and dilution of a positively buoyant jet, or a rising jet, and have been modified to account for the sinking effect. Twenty-four experimental investigations were conducted involving different combinations of densimetric Froude number, velocity ratios, and initial angle of discharge. Salt was used as the tracer, yielding a fluid that was denser than the ambient receiving water and facilitated measuring concentration profiles of the jet plume. The coefficient of entrainment, the major mechanism of dilution, was determined as a function of the densimetric Froude number, velocity ratio, and initial angle of discharge. The reducted drag coefficient was chosen as zero for both models since any other value would predict a trajectory whose rise would be less than experimentally observed. For all angles of discharge the entrainment coefficient increased with a decrease in the velocity ratio and with an increase in densimetric Froude number. Additionally, there was a marked decrease in the entrainmnet coefficient with a decrease in the initial angle of discharge."--Page ii.

Confidence in Life

release date: Dec 28, 2023
Confidence in Life
Confidence in Life offers a theologically-robust evaluation of the good of procreation, which emerges out of both careful interactions with contemporary analytic philosophy and a reconstructed reading of Karl Barth''s doctrine of (pro)creation. While analytic moral philosophy has rarely been brought into close proximity to Barth''s work, the conjunction underscores the deep difficulty of accounting for procreation''s value within non-theological frameworks, and helps clarify what is distinctive and valuable about Barth''s own moral reasoning on this subject. Though primarily staged as an intervention in Protestant moral theology, Confidence in Life''s rehabilitation of the Virgin Mary''s role in Barth''s thought has promise for an ecumenical retrieval of the good of procreating within the economy of redemption-and its retrieval of honour as an indispensable aspect of Barth''s theology will be of interest to Barth scholars and moral theologians alike.

To Lose a War

release date: Aug 12, 2025
To Lose a War
From one of the great foreign correspondents of our time, author of some of the most essential reporting from Afghanistan from before 9/11 to the return of the Taliban to power in 2021, the first full accounting of that entire era, combining previously published dispatches and new reporting into a single epic tapestry Jon Lee Anderson first reported from Afghanistan in the late 1980s, covering the US-backed mujahideen’s insurrection against the Soviet-backed regime in Kabul. Within days of the 9/11 attacks, he was again on the ground as an early eyewitness to the new war launched by the US against the Taliban and their Al Qaeda allies. His reportage from the first year of the war won a number of awards and was published in book form as The Lion’s Grave: Dispatches from Afghanistan. At the time, the American military had prevailed on the battlefield, and the newfound peace seemed to offer a precious space for Afghan society to restore itself and to forge a democratic future. But all was not well: Osama bin Laden was still in hiding, the Taliban were stealthily reorganizing for a comeback, and the United States was about to turn its attention to Iraq. To Lose a War collects Anderson’s writing from Afghanistan over a near-quarter-century span. Containing the stories from The Lion’s Grave and all of those he published since, as well as important writing appearing here for the first time, the book offers a chronological account of a monumental tragedy as it unfolds. The colossal waste, missed signals, and wishful thinking that characterized the twenty-year arc of the US-led war in Afghanistan have consecrated it as one of the greatest foreign policy failures of the modern era, and a bellwether of a larger American imperial decline.
