What is the Experience of Encountering the Self ?

release date: Jan 01, 1988
What is the Experience of Encountering the Self ?
[Abstract] This study is a heuristic investigation of "What is the experience of encountering the self?" The intent was to identify and understand the essential structure and meaning of the experience. The inquiry involved three phases: (1) examining the literature, (2) immersion into the researcher''s own experience of self-encounter, and (3) exploring the meaning of the experience of self-encounter in others. The study was grounded in a human science framework, using a phenomenological-existential model to investigate the experience. Major phases of the process were immersion, incubation, illumination, explication, and creative synthesis. Qualitative interviewing and journaling were used to obtain descriptions of others'' experiences of selfencounter. Using these descriptions, key themes emerged and the structure of the experience was determined through the internal processing of the researcher. The structure of encountering the self reflects the unitary nature of the body-self experience. The experience is conceptualized in terms of a process of moving inward to experience the dynamic self as it emerges to the individual. The dynamism of the self-process emerges in the context of bodily-sensations, visualizations, and cognitive changes. Encountering the self implies a sense of trust in the absence of fear, and is experienced as integrated or disintegrated. Regardless, the result is an increased sense of integration and tranquility which flows and generalizes in the aftermath.
