Nineteenth Century Freedom Fighters

release date: Apr 18, 2007
Nineteenth Century Freedom Fighters
This Civil War regimental history vividly chronicles the Union Army''s first black unit through the personal writings of its commanding officer. The 1st South Carolina Volunteers, later the 33rd United States Colored Troops, were the first black unit of the Civil War. Beginning a year before the 54th Massachusetts—the unit immortalized in the film Glory—the 1st South Carolina was comprised of men who had escaped slavery to fight for the freedom of all. Known for their courage, discipline, and pride, they continued to serve the Union cause even while their regiment was temporarily disbanded. The 1st South Carolina Volunteers fought for years with little or no pay, poor equipment, and constant pressure and abuse from both North and South. In this brief volume, historian Curtis M. Miller presents a vivid chronicle of these unsung heroes, largely culled from the letters and journals of their commanding officer, Lt. Col. Charles T. Trowbridge.

The Northern Home Front during the Civil War

release date: Feb 21, 2023
The Northern Home Front during the Civil War
With a new preface and updated historiographical essay. Based on recent scholarship and deep research in primary sources, especially the letters and diaries of “ordinary people,” The Northern Home Front during the Civil War is the first full narrative history and analysis of the northern home front in almost a quarter-century. It examines the mobilization, recruitment, management, politics, costs, and experience of war from the perspective of the home front, with special attention to the ways the war affected the ideas, identities, interests, and issues shaping people’s lives, and vice versa. The book looks closely at people’s responses to war’s demands, whether in supporting the Union cause or opposing it, and it measures the ways the war transformed society and economy or simply reconfirmed ideas and reinforced practices already underway. As The Northern Home Front during the Civil War reveals, issues and concerns of emancipation, conscription, civil liberties, economic policies and practices, religion, party politics, war management, popular culture, and work were all part of what Lincoln rightly termed “a People’s Contest” and as much as the armies in the field determined the outcome of the nation’s ordeal by fire. As The Northern Home Front during the Civil War shows, understanding the experience of the women and men on the home front is essential to realizing Walt Whitman’s oft-quoted call to get “the real war” into the books.

From the Fiery Stakes of Europe to the Federal Courts of America

release date: Mar 19, 2026
From the Fiery Stakes of Europe to the Federal Courts of America
From medieval torture chambers where heretics burned alive to the marble halls of American justice, this extraordinary historical journey traces the dramatic evolution of religious freedom across centuries of human struggle. Elizabeth M. Miller unveils a sweeping narrative that begins with the crackling flames of European persecution and follows the long, blood-soaked path to the Constitutional protections we know today. Through meticulous research and vivid storytelling, Miller illuminates the forgotten heroes who paid the ultimate price for their beliefs, transforming personal tragedy into universal triumph. Witness the agonizing final moments of Protestant martyrs, the desperate flight of religious refugees across treacherous seas, and the fierce courtroom battles that would forever change the meaning of liberty in America. This is not merely legal history, but a deeply human story of courage, conviction, and the unbreakable spirit that refused to bow before tyranny. Each page pulses with the raw emotion of those who chose death over compromise, their sacrifice echoing through time to shape the very foundations of American democracy. This powerful chronicle speaks directly to our contemporary struggles over faith, freedom, and government authority. Miller''s masterful analysis reveals startling parallels between past persecution and modern conflicts, offering profound insights for anyone grappling with questions of religious liberty, judicial power, and constitutional rights. Historians, legal scholars, and general readers alike will discover how the ashes of European martyrdom became the cornerstone of American justice. This is essential reading for understanding not just where our freedoms came from, but why they remain so precious and fragile in our own turbulent times.

Echoes of a Haunting

release date: Jan 31, 2000
Echoes of a Haunting
In the first place, the house doesnt even look haunted. With these words, a different world opens up to readers as it did some twenty nine years ago for an unsuspecting family from Buffalo, New York. Echoes of a Haunting traces the steps of this normal family whose life turned upside down when they moved to a disturbed or haunted house in Southern New York State in 1970. It is told in diary form in order to bring a semblance of order to the events. At first, the family tended to discount the happenings and come up with some rather creative explanations. Soon, however, the explanations began more and more to assume the form of rationalizations. Before long, they were forced to admit that there was no natural cause for what was occurring daily both in the house and in the surrounding area. Reluctantly, the members of the family began to reach out to others. In some cases, they encountered scorn and even a strange, unwarranted, hostility as though the whole panoply of phenomena were their fault. It was a very bad atmosphere in which to raise a family. Once the story became public, help was offered by psychics and clergy. In some cases this help even brought a temporary relief but the trouble never disappeared for long. Strange accidents, one almost fatal, happened on a regular basis. Figures were seen, both human and otherwise. In one case a house was seen where no house had existed for many, many years. Disturbing personality changes emerged, even resulting in a transformation of eye color from brown to blue. The toll taken on the emotional and physical health of the family soon became too much to endure and they were forced to abandon the house in 1974. Hopefully, this book will cause skeptics to think again to avoid a similar shock to the senses. The family had a rude awakening. Its never easy finding out that you cant always trust your senses, that nothing is really impossible and that there is a breaking point for everyone. Whether the reader is a died-in-the-wool skeptic, a searcher, a believer or somewhere in between, I hope everyone reads these pages with an open mind. It is all true! Echoes of a Haunting has recently been chosen as a textbook for a Masters Degree Program in Parapsychology at Texas Christian University. The Professor teaching the course, Dr. Timothy Barth, has stated that its the best documented case of a haunting he has ever read. The house is currently being investigated by Paranormal researchers who have taken startling photos of "energy orbs" and strange colored lights in the area. Hopefully, these photos will be available soon on the Authors website.
