An Uneasy Alliance

release date: Jan 01, 2005
An Uneasy Alliance
In the post World War II era, the Mathematics Research Center (MRC) was one of the earliest comprehensive examples of collaboration between the government and a university. By taking a broad view of mathematics that embraced both the pure and applied branches, the MRC provided a model of an interdisciplinary effort that interacted very well with the spectrum of sciences. This book deals with the complex and challenging organizational and scientific issues that arose in the operation of this center.

S. N. Haskell--Man of Action
Among the most colorful of the early Seventh-day Adventist church workers was Stephen Nelson Haskell. A self-made man, fearless, and endowed with ingenuity, courage, and vision, Haskell led in a number of enterprises that were accepted and established by the denomination. He was the first to make an around-the-world trip in the interest of Adventist missions, taking almost two years. He was a leader in city mission work, and we think of him as the father of the tract and missionary societies from which developed the Book and Bible Houses and two departments of the church--Publishing and Home Missionary.

Bandits, Eunuchs, and the Son of Heaven

release date: Oct 31, 2001
Bandits, Eunuchs, and the Son of Heaven
On a spring afternoon in 1509 a local bandit found himself in the emperor''s private quarters deep within the Forbidden City and in the presence of the Son of Heaven himself. This bizarre meeting was the doing of the eunuch Zhang Zhong, the emperor''s personal servant and companion. In time court intrigue between competing palace eunuchs would lead to the death of this bandit-turned-rebel, setting off a massive uprising that resulted in China''s largest rebellion of the sixteenth century. To understand how this extraordinary meeting came about requires a consideration of the economy of violence during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Here, for the first time in any language, is a detailed look at the role of illicit violence during the Ming. Drawing on court annals, imperial law codes, administrative regulations, private writings, and local gazetteers, David Robinson recreates in vivid detail a world where heavily armed highwaymen and bandits raided the boulevards in and around the Ming capital, Beijing. He then convincingly traces the roots of this systemic mayhem to economic, ethnic, social, and institutional factors at work in local society.

Hurricane of Fire

release date: Jan 01, 1998
Hurricane of Fire
Based on exhaustive primary-source research, this is the first full history - from a naval perspective - of the fort on North Carolina''s Cape Fear River and its little-known significance as both the Achilles'' heel of the Union blockade and the lifeline of the Confederacy. It challenges many hidebound perceptions. Robinson vigorously disputes traditional explanations for the Union''s inaction and the sacking of Adm. Samuel Lee with often embarrassing new findings. In a minute-by-minute description of the heaviest naval bombardment and greatest amphibious assault the world had ever seen, he also offers new evidence that vindicates the ill-equipped and poorly trained sailors and marines who for more than 130 years have been unjustly blamed for the failure of their assault across a mile of open beach.

The Physics of Actinide Compounds

The Physics of Actinide Compounds
The authors'' aim is to present a review of experimental and theoretical research that has been done to establish and to explain the physical properties of actinide compounds. The book is aimed at physicists and chemists. It was thought useful to collect a large selection of diagrams of experimental data scattered in the literature. Experiment and theory are presented separately, with cross references. Not all work has been included: rather, typical examples are discussed. We apologize to all researchers whose work has not been quoted. Since we report on an active field of research, clearly the data and their interpretation are subject to change. We benefitted greatly from discussions with many of our colleagues, particularly with Drs. G. H. Lander and W. Suski. The help of Mrs. C. Bovey and Ch. Lewis in the preparation of the manuscript, and the artwork and photo graphic work of Ms. Y. Magnenat and E. Spielmann of the Institute of Experi mental Physics of the University of Lausanne, are gratefully acknowledged. Our particular thanks are due to Ms. J. Ubby for her skillful and patient editorial work.

The Great Divide

The Great Divide
In the hallowed halls of the capital, some who have sworn to preserve our nation''s union are secretly plotting its demise and they are willing to kill to achieve their goals. The country has been split into two distinct factions over energy - "the haves" (those states that are fuel self-sufficient) and "the have nots". The inept execution of a flawed foreign policy in the Middle East has resulted in an Arab-backed oil embargo of the United States. Now the country is in the grips of the most severe winter in years, and rationing has led to unrest and rioting in the streets and certain politicians and business power brokers are ready to make a move. As masses freeze in Chicago and the northeast, fuel-sufficient sunbelt conspirators seek to separate themselves from the rest of the nation, make their own foreign policy, and govern by their own rules and to do it they will resort to blackmail, bribery, and even murder. The Constitution is only a stumbling block, and it can be amended. The United States will be united no more.
