A Low-Emissions, Compassionate and Sustainable Economy
The dependence on animal agriculture and fishing as mainstay of the New Zealand economy is impacting on the lives of sentient animals. It also has a damaging effect on the environment and public health. Many in the agricultural industry are aware of this. Their solutions of further intensification and new technology may lower environmental impacts in some areas such as greenhouse gas emissions, but these lead to other environmental and animal welfare concerns. We propose instead that the New Zealand economy should divest totally from animal production. This is primarily for reasons of ethics, but there are also economic considerations. With the shift in consumer demand to plant-based and low impact eating, new technologies such as precision fermentation and lab-based meat are threatening the animal agriculture industry. Alternative means to grow our economy are suggested as a stimulus to further discussion.

Please see the pdf version of the abstract for an accurate reproduction.] Wave run-up is the vertical uprush of water when an incident wave impinges on a free- surface penetrating body. For large volume offshore structures the wave run-up on the weather side of the supporting columns is particularly important for air-gap design and ultimately the avoidance of pressure impulse loads on the underside of the deck structure. This investigation focuses on the limitations of conventional wave diffraction theory, where the free-surface boundary condition is treated by a Stokes expansion, in predicting the harmonic components of the wave run-up, and the presentation of a simplified procedure for the prediction of wave run-up. The wave run-up is studied on fixed vertical cylinders in plane progressive waves. These progressive waves are of a form suitable for description by Stokes'' wave theory whereby the typical energy content of a wave train consists of one fundamental harmonic and corresponding phase locked Fourier components. Determining the Flow Stress Properties at the Surface of Materials Using Indentation Testing with Conical Or Spherical Indenters
Abstract: Finite Element (FE) computer programs are becoming increasingly popular as a tool to simulate machining processes. These programs are useful for predicting tool forces, stress and strain distributions during deformation, residual stresses, and a variety of other parameters. Unfortunately, the accuracy of the predicted results depends heavily on the knowledge of the material properties, such as the flow stress. Thus, a testing method is required that is capable of accurately determining the flow stress properties at the surface of materials. Indentation testing is explored as a means of determining these properties. In this testing the load versus stroke curve is recorded and used as a means of inversely determining the material properties through Finite Element (FE). The use of both spherical and conical indenters was explored in this study. It is shown that conical indenters exhibit non-uniqueness in the flow stress results. These non-unique results have a common intersection at what is known as the representative strain of the indenter. This representative strain is dependent on the geometry (cone angle and tip diameter) of the indenter and a procedure is outlined for using FE analysis to determine this value. While the use of the pile-height (the height of material piling-up around the indentation) is possible as an indicator of the strain-hardening exponent of the material, these results are shown to be dependent on the friction factor that is assumed in the simulation. Spherical indentation is shown to produce unique results for the flow stress, provided that the material is indented to a sufficient depth. A procedure is outlined for determining the flow stress by iteratively running the FEM simulation until the sum- squared errors is minimized between the experimental and simulated load-stroke curves. Additionally, a procedure is demonstrated in which the flow stress can be determined through the use of multiple static-loading indentation tests utilizing standard Rockwell hardness machinery. This reduces the need for using specialized instrumented indentation equipment. Multiple experiments were conducted on samples of aluminum and hardened steel. Reasonable values for the flow stress were found using both conical and spherical indentations. However, the conical indentation required that a value for friction between the interfaces be assumed and adequate measurements of the surface profile be measured. This was shown to have considerable influence on the results. The results from spherical indentation are shown to not be influenced by the assumed friction between the interfaces and not require the measurement of surface profiles. Unique solutions were found from the spherical indentation with the use of only the load-stroke data. For this reason, spherical indentation is recommended over conical indentation for flow stress determination.
