The Cruden Farm Garden Diaries

release date: Apr 18, 2017
The Cruden Farm Garden Diaries
"Cruden Farm was given to the late Dame Elisabeth Murdoch in 1928 as a wedding present from her husband Sir Keith Murdoch. The farm at Langwarrin, about 50 kilometres south-east of Melbourne, was a place she cherished throughout her long life. The beautiful garden she created there with gardener Michael Morrison is one of Australia's finest. In 1984 Michael began to keep garden diaries, a practice that endures to this day. He writes of the plants that have thrived and those they've lost, of terrible heat and freak storms, of escaped cows and memorable parties. The diaries recount the plans he and Dame Elisabeth hatched, the triumphs and tensions, the sheer fun of making a garden together. In an age preoccupied with selfies and spotlight chasers, Michael Morrison's diaries remind us of a different way of living - of more than forty years spent quietly but passionately dedicated to one special garden and its unique owner."

40 Days of Discipleship 1

release date: Jun 26, 2016
40 Days of Discipleship 1
We recommend that church leaders pursue formal education that gives both breadth and depth. However, formal education is not practical for everyone. We recommend here a plan by which a person might use free resources from the Grace Communion International website to guide them in their education. There are two important components of this list: 1) prioritization and 2) breadth.1) Prioritization: Our website has more than 1000 articles, and it can be difficult to know where to start. Of these articles, which are the most important? We try to provide some guidance on that by putting them into three groups. This book is the first of three groups. These are not necessarily levels of difficulty (most of our articles are from publications aimed at a lay audience), but this organization provides some guidance about how to spread the reading out.Since most of the articles on our website were previously published in our denominational magazines, you may have read these articles before. Nevertheless, do not assume that you know what is in them! Almost all of our website articles have been edited within the last four years, to remove phrasings we now realize to be erroneous, and in some cases, to add insights we've had more recently. (Some of the articles were originally published 20 years ago, and some have been extensively revised to bring them up to date with our current theological understanding.)2) Breadth: Do not study only the topics that already interest you. You (and the members of your church) need exposure to other important topics. Read all the articles in group 1 before you proceed to group 2. We have attempted to give breadth in each sequence, with about the same amount of reading in each area. We have grouped the articles into 2000-2500 words for each day. If you read about 20 minutes per day, you'll be done in 40 days. Some people might want to go faster, others slower. Since you set your own pace, you will need some self-discipline to continue the journey.

40 Days of Discipleship 3

40 Days of Discipleship 3
This is the third volume in our series for church leaders who want to continue their theological education with free resources from the GCI website. Some articles are long, and some are short, but the average is still 2500 words per day, which can be read in about 20 minutes. On each of the major topics, much more could be said, and we often have additional resources on our website. For example, we have more than 100 articles about different chapters in the Bible, numerous articles on church history, prayer, missions, and other topics. Many of the website resources have been compiled into books, and are available either as PDF files, or as printed books, on Amazon.com. For our fourth volume, we plan to compile transcripts of 20 episodes of You're Included.

Exploring the Word of God: the Four Gospels

release date: Oct 03, 2014
Exploring the Word of God: the Four Gospels
The person and work of Jesus Christ is at the heart of Christianity. So we would expect the Christian Scriptures to include an account of Jesus' life. But why do we have four - the Gospels According to Matthew, Mark, Luke and John? Isn't this redundant? Wouldn't one be enough? On the contrary, our knowledge of Jesus Christ would be incomplete if we had only one Gospel. Or even if we had three Gospels but were missing one. Matthew, Mark, Luke and John each told the story from a different perspective, because each had a different audience in mind. We tend to blur these four distinctive portraits of Jesus together. But knowing how an act or saying of Jesus fits in with each author's perspective can greatly enhance our understanding of its meaning. In this volume, we examine how each Gospel differs from the others, and numerous detailed studies. This volume includes 95 articles about the four Gospels collected from Christian Odyssey magazine and other publications of Grace Communion International. Illustrations by Ken Tunell. The articles were written over a span of 20 years - from the 1990s to 2013. They have been edited for this collection.

What Does the Bible Say about the Kingdom of God?

release date: Oct 07, 2014
What Does the Bible Say about the Kingdom of God?
Sometimes Jesus talked about the kingdom of God as if it were already here, and sometimes he talked as if it were far in the future. Which is it, and how does it affect life right now? Another way to approach the question is to observe that Jesus preached about the kingdom of God, but his disciples preached about Jesus. Why this difference in focus, and why does it matter for us today? In this collection of articles, we look at what Jesus said about the kingdom, the parables he used to describe it, and how Paul integrated that into his message of salvation through faith in Christ. In the last half of this book, Gary Deddo takes a more theological look at the kingdom and its relationship to the work we do in the church today.
