#MeToo and Cyber Activism in China

by: Li Ma
release date: Nov 16, 2021
#MeToo and Cyber Activism in China
This book focusses on the #MeToo movement in China, critically examining how three competing ideologies have worked in co-opting #MeToo activism: China’s official communism, Western neoliberalism, and an emerging Chinese cyber-feminism. In 2018, China’s #MeToo cyber activism initially maintained its momentum despite strict censorship, presenting women’s voices against gendered violence and revealing scripts of power in different sectors of society. Eventually though it lost impetus with sloganization and stigmatization under a trio forces of pressures: corporate corruption, over-politicization by Western media and continued state censorship. The book documents the social events and gendered norms in higher education, NGOs, business and religious circles that preceded and followed high-profile cases of alleged sexual abuses in mainland China, engaging with sociological scholarship relating to demoralization and power, media studies and gender studies. Through these entwined theories the author seeks to give both scholars and the general audience in gender studies a window into the ongoing tension in the power spheres of state, market and gendered hierarchy in contemporary Chinese society. This book will be of interest to students of gender studies, China studies, media studies, and cultural Studies

“The Belt and Road” International Migration of Asia

release date: Aug 31, 2021
“The Belt and Road” International Migration of Asia
The book studies multilateral population security issues and relevant governance strategies caused by international migration in the countries impacted by China’s Belt and Road initiative and their border areas. Buttressed by solid data mining and policy analysis, the title looks into the demographic trends of international migration in China and some Asian Belt and Road countries and stresses the urgency for more effective governance practices. Seeking to address the population security crisis triggered by the Initiative, the authors propose the idea of “multilateral population security governance”, grounded in the real-world challenges facing Belt and Road countries while also drawing on experiences of migration governance in western countries. As a new governance model, it calls for cross-border joint action and takes into consideration pertinent factors including economy, politics, culture, religion and commerce. Several case studies and comparative studies are offered in the chapters to illuminate the significance and effect of this cooperative mechanism. The book will be of interest to researchers and government officials interested in non-traditional security, international migration and formal demography as well as topics on population, resources and environment.

The Stone and the Wireless

release date: May 14, 2021
The Stone and the Wireless
In the final decades of the Manchu Qing dynasty in China, technologies such as the phonograph, telephone, telegraph, and photography were both new and foreign. In The Stone and the Wireless Shaoling Ma analyzes diplomatic diaries, early science fiction, feminist poetry, photography, telegrams, and other archival texts, and shows how writers, intellectuals, reformers, and revolutionaries theorized what media does despite lacking a vocabulary to do so. Media defines the dynamics between technologies and their social or cultural forms, between devices or communicative processes and their representations in texts and images. More than simply reexamining late Qing China''s political upheavals and modernizing energies through the lens of media, Ma shows that a new culture of mediation was helping to shape the very distinctions between politics, gender dynamics, economics, and science and technology. Ma contends that mediation lies not only at the heart of Chinese media history but of media history writ large.

Grammar Anthology

Grammar Anthology
Grammar Anthology is a collection of students’ essays as the outcome of Grammar in Discourse course taught in 5 classes. This writing project is assigned to provide opportunity for students to practice composing academic writing while applying theories of Grammar in Discourse . Moreover, as designed in the Outcome- Based Curriculum, this anthology can be a media for the students to express their opinions and map ideas based on contemporary facts they found in everyday life contexts. As we are reading and editing the anthology, we cannot help but be profoundly impressed by the perspectives our students have brought up in their writings. In this book, you would see how English grammatical units which are adapted from Grammar and Beyond book 3 (Blass et al., 2013) are rooted. The grammatical units such as subordinators and prepositions, transition words and phrases, adverb clauses, comparatives, parallel structure, the passives, and ‘it’ constructions are studied and implemented to express ideas on cause-effect, comparison-contrast, classifications and definitions, and problem solution. Those units are employed to discuss factual life subjects such as cultural values, inventions, human motivation, millennials and media in short essays. These essays are then classified in accordance to the following categories: Social Responsibility, Human Behaviour, Business dan Nutrition and Health. We do not think we would be able to produce such interesting essays without the help and support from our colleagues in the Faculty of Cultural Studies and Department of Languages and Literature at Brawijaya University. Therefore, we would also like to express our gratitude to Faculty of Cultural Studies and Department of Languages and Literature Brawijaya University.

A Guide to Understanding Autism

release date: Dec 11, 2019
A Guide to Understanding Autism
During the past decade of working with children with autism, I have found that misconceptions abounds. It is not certain why some people are wired cognitively different, appears and behaves differently, nor is it certain why rainbows arise. The fact remains that these events occur and must be embraced. Working with children who have autism have not always been easy neither has it been difficult. I have felt joy in the little progress made. I have also expressed frustration at my inability to fully understand the condition and thereby have the ability to effect change. Here lies the crux of the matter, the desire to gain information in order to manipulate changes, in effect to change a person to become like everyone else? No one can do that moreover, it is a wrong approach, best to work with what is now; seek not to improve on creation and reinvent a new person. Autism is constant; autism is predictable; autism is unvarying in its behavior, its rigidity and its resistance to change.

What Drives China’s Economy

release date: Nov 26, 2019
What Drives China’s Economy
The spectacular economic growth experienced by China since 1978 has often been hailed as the "China Miracle". Many economists have tried to understand the forces behind China’s phenomenal growth and the explanations can be divided into two broad schools of economic thought — one school of thought which includes Nobel Laureate Paul Krugman explains that market mechanism and deregulation led to China’s success, while the other school of thought which include Justin Yifu Lin, the former Chief Economist and Senior Vice-President of the World Bank, explains that China’s growth miracle is a unique model to itself defined by the Chinese government’s prominent role. The Chinese government has been responsible in identifying and investing in industries that have contributed to economic growth. Some economists in the latter school even claim that the China Miracle cannot be explained by mainstream economics. This book examines both schools of thought and attempts to provide a synthesis of the two schools to explain the China Miracle. It looks at the Solow-Swan growth model, the Harrod-Domar model and transaction cost theory. It provides insights into whether and how China can sustain its growth and how developing countries may replicate China’s success.

Hope

release date: Feb 19, 2021
Hope
Hope: The Strongest Motivation, is a review of the motivational tools used in the Old and New Testaments to motivate and inspire. From the very beginning of Genesis in the Old Testament to Revelations in the New Testament, Mike Payton takes a verse from each chapter of the Bible and elaborates on a particular motivational strategy by applying it to modern day life. While not a book persuading a particular religion or way of worship, "Hope: the Strongest Motivation," does emphasize through the different ages, both B.C. and A.C., that hope was and still is the strongest motivating source for mankind. As to whether the reader agrees or disagrees with the opinions presented is not as important as understanding that regardless of how desperate your life may become, whatever crisis you may be going through, or the realization of challenges yet to come, hope is the one consistent motivational force that can keep you going. The reader is also left to his or her own opinions on where hope originates: God, science, a higher power, etc. Should "Hope: the Strongest Motivation," cause the reader to realize the importance and power of hope in our lives, then the goal of the writer is achieved.
