Death Row

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Death Row
Fifteen years ago when Jack Delaney was a beat cop not long out of Hendon, two children went missing from Carlton Row, a small residential street in Harrow. They were never seen alive again. Two years later Delaney rescued a young girl from the boot of an abandoned car, leading to the capture of Peter Garnier, one of the most horrific child rapists and murderers in recent history. Although the bodies were never found, Garnier admitted to murdering the two children and many, many more. He was sent to prison for the rest of his natural life. Jack had thought the case was closed. But he couldn''t have been more wrong. This morning ... another young boy is taken from Carlton Row. Peter Garnier sends Jack the chilling message that they are both at the heart of the mystery, and Delaney has no time to figure out why, or how. Because tonight, the killings begin again ...

Communicator's Guide to Media Law and Ethics

Communicator's Guide to Media Law and Ethics
This book offers an introduction to the key legal and ethical topics confronting Australian journalists and strategic communicators both at home and internationally and offers a suite of reflective techniques for navigating them. It starts by positioning morals, ethics, and the law in their historical and philosophical frameworks by tracing the evolution of free expression and professional media ethics. Media law and ethics are then contextualized in their modern international human rights framework. Readers are equipped with a skill set for reflecting on the law and ethics of professional media dilemmas - including mindful reflection, the Potter Box, journaling, concept mapping, and discussion. Such approaches are then applied to key topic areas, including free expression; reputation; confidentiality; privacy; justice; intellectual property; national security; discrimination and harassment; and conflicted interests. Each is examined in terms of its philosophical underpinnings, relationship to human rights, professional ethical context, international examples, legal principles, key Australian laws, legal cases, and strategies for applying reflective practice techniques. It concludes on a confident note - imploring communicators to engage in constructive and mindful strategic communication with the authority and confidence that results from a working knowledge of media law and ethics. This handbook is for professional communicators and students in all fields, but particularly in journalism, public relations, corporate communication, media relations, and marketing.

90 Seconds to Midnight

release date: Feb 09, 2024
90 Seconds to Midnight
"90 seconds to midnight" is the first book in a series of novels. The Prologue sets the scene at 24 January 2023, when the Science and Security Board (SSB) of the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists (BAS) adjusted the Doomsday Clock to "90 seconds to midnight" its closest it had ever been to a predicted global catastrophe, since its inception in 1947. Midnight is the predicted time of Doomsday: annihilation of the planet. The main protagonist is Joe Clifford, who graduated in 2017 with a BSC Economics (Honours) from The London School of Economics and Political Science, University of London. He had been headhunted in his last year at university by a recruiter from MI5, the UK''s Security Service, under a graduate induction program. "90 seconds to midnight" chronicles his induction and initial training at MI5 and his first post as an internal intelligence officer. He is fast tracked after three months and undergoes extensive training in preparation for his detachment as an active field agent in the Counter-Espionage division of MI5. The book concludes with his first case as a field agent where he plays an integral part in investigating a perceived Chinese attempt to commit cyber warfare. These books are fictional, although they do at times refer to real life people, places and occurrences, for authenticity.

Aid for Trade and Economic Partnership Agreements
This issue of Trade Hot Topics examines the relationship between Aid for Trade (AfT) and Economic Partnership Agreements (EPAs). The current AfT is taking place mainly under a WTO multilateral framework, although there is also a place for AfT in the framework of EPA negotiations. AfT can be a part of the development agenda of the EPA and can be a mechanism which links projects and programmes identified in the EPA process as necessary for the development of the region, and their financing.

The Field Artillery in Support of Deep Offensive Missions

release date: Jan 01, 1985
The Field Artillery in Support of Deep Offensive Missions
This study examines the sufficiency of U.S. field artillery doctrine and force structure for the conduct of exploitation and pursuit on the airland battlefield. Focus is primarily upon the operational level of war, although salient tactical lessons are investigated as well. An historical analysis of deep offensive campaigns conducted by the Soviet and American armies of World War II, compared and contrasted with the more recent experience of the Israeli Defense Force during the 1973 MidEast War, offers a synthesis of relevant considerations for exploitations and pursuit from battlefields in the past. Next, the study looks to see whether modern-day planners have applied those historical lessons to current and projected U.S. artillery doctrine and force structure. Then, an assessment is offered on the possible impact of technology upon conclusions drawn from the three historical case studies. The study concludes that field artillery organizations and doctrine of the future must emphasize a systemic approach to deep offensive missions. Recommendations include: joint mission analysis of exploitation and pursuit by field artillery and air force agencies; the establishment of fire support coordination centers and conventional artillery reserves at echelons above corps (EAC); considerations of fire support to be held in reserve until counteroffensive actions are initiated; designation of field artillery organizations to be trained especially for the conduct of deep offensive missions; and reconfiguration of divisional artillery organizations. Finally, the author lists those fire support tasks which appear critical to the successful accompaniment of maneuver forces at operational depths.

Preventing Unintentional Injuries to Children in the Home

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Preventing Unintentional Injuries to Children in the Home
In children under the age of five, the majority of unintentional injuries occur in the home, with higher levels of injury morbidity and mortality being found among those from more deprived backgrounds. This paper presents the findings of a systematic review about the effectiveness of programmes in decreasing unintentional injury rates to children (aged up to 15 years) in the home. The effectiveness of the provision of home safety equipment with or without installation, safety education or a home risk assessment is presented by outcome: injury rates, installation of smoke alarms and installation of other home safety equipment.

Girls, Girls, Girls
"Australian journalism programs have long reported a disproportionate number of female students and the industry is becoming increasingly feminised. The latest (2006) Census figures showed that, for the first time in Australian history, women outnumbered men in journalism and related occupations. While many researchers have commented upon the increased popularity of journalism as a career choice among young women and its decline in popularity among young men, none have undertaken a comprehensive project researching the reasons for this phenomenon. This study has addressed this gap in the research. The research team conducted an extensive literature review, surveyed 444 senior secondary school students and 32 high school careers advisers, and conducted in-depth interviews with 15 ''elite'' journalism industry personnel to explore the reasons for this trend. This monograph reviews the literature of the field, highlights the findings of the study, and discusses the implications for Australian journalism of the increasingly feminised newsroom. It identifies several gaps between the perceptions of teenagers about journalism and the realities of the career and questions the motivations and knowledge base of many students when deciding to pursue or reject the career choice. It suggests some careers advice they receive might be misguided, particularly when the advice is based upon performance in senior school English studies. The monograph concludes with a call for journalism programs and the industry generally to improve their communication with high school students, teachers and careers advisers to enhance their knowledge of the range of journalism careers and the mission of journalism in a democratic society. The authors also suggest further research be conducted into the compatibility of the senior secondary English curriculum with the workplace requirements of the entry level journalist."--Abstract, p. 5.
