John Gregg was born in the parish of McCaskee, County of Londonderry, Ireland, in 1702. He had two sons, James Gregg (1725-1819) and John Gregg (1758-1835). John Gregg (1758-1835) and his wife, Mary Taylor (1761-1833), had a son, William T. Gregg. He was born at Frankfort, New York, in 1792 and died at Stockridge, New York, in 1865.
