How to Avoid Trolls Under Bridges (and Other Stories)

release date: Jun 23, 2025
How to Avoid Trolls Under Bridges (and Other Stories)
Three graphic stories introduce some ways to think critically about the questions and problems we all come across in our lives. Discussing the questions after each story encourages children to consider how decisions involving risk are made, how to develop evidence-based explanations and people''s rights and responsibilities. Little Red Riding Hood had the right to be kept safe by her parents. Did they neglect their responsibilities by letting her go into the forest on her own? Can Little Red Riding Hood''s right to be listened to, to be allowed to play and to be taken seriously be balanced with keeping her safe? Colour-coded commentaries on rights and responsibilities are made by the animals observing Little Red Riding Hood''s day. You could read the story without the commentaries, then go back to see how the story can be framed by the rights and responsibilities of the characters. The Three Billy Goats Gruff consider ''danger'' as a calculation of risk. The benefits of crossing a river to reach fresh grass are balanced with potential risks. The goats calculate the risk of coming across ''danger'' but not how serious the danger might be. The goats did not have enough facts about the troll, and they overestimated the danger! Young Chicken Licken thinks that the sky is falling down. The other animals look for evidence to back up his theory. Instead, they find evidence suggesting an alternative explanation. Now Chicken Licken can use this explanation to predict what might happen in the future. He''ll avoid running under oak trees in the autumn!
