Deconstructing Differences in Effectiveness of Teachers of Tenth Grade Non-proficient Readers in One Florida School District

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Deconstructing Differences in Effectiveness of Teachers of Tenth Grade Non-proficient Readers in One Florida School District
Despite an intense focus and considerable financial commitment to remediate non-proficient readers in high school, the large suburban school district that was the target of this study had been unable to consistently improve student achievement in the lowest 25% of students as measured by outcomes on the FCAT Reading. Scholarly literature on high school reading had focused mostly on evaluation of curriculum rather than on teacher practices. A clear understanding of these differences in practice will inform future decisions related to staffing, scheduling, and professional learning. This study sought to identify the underlying professional and instructional differences between the most effective and least effective teachers of tenth grade intensive reading courses through teacher and principal/assistant principal surveys along with teacher evaluation data. This study revealed with regards to a teacher's preparation to teach reading (research question one), that years of experience in the classroom and years of experience as a high school reading teacher were the only significant factors that influenced a teacher's effectiveness. For research questions two and three; which had to do with the beliefs and professional practices of the teacher, the educationally relevant belief that the more effective teachers were more confident about their abilities than their less effective peers was noted. Research question four provided the data with regards to the general classroom teaching strategies and the adolescent reading strategies the effective teachers employed. This data revealed that the more effective teachers implemented posting and communicating daily and long term learning goals more frequently than their less effective peers. In addition, the general classroom teaching practices of efficient use of learning time, establishing and maintaining classroom routines, and checking for understanding proved to be educationally relevant. Additionally, the adolescent reading strategies of sustained silent reading, paired/partner readings, and students reading one-on-one with teacher, were educationally relevant as well. Finally, in regards to research question five, it was of statistical significance that administrators valued the use of the general classroom teaching strategy of posting and communicating daily and long term learning goals and were able to recognize the use of this strategy when observing and evaluating the teachers.

What are the Most Effective Practices of School Principals?
The purpose of this study is to determine what research has found to be the most effective practices of school principals. This study will then gather teacher perceptions of each practice related to their work to increase classroom achievement. In the end, a list of research based principal practices will be ranked according to teacher feedback of perceived effectiveness.

Analysis suggests that beliefs held by these participants change in different ways. One kind of change observed reflected a transformation from believing one set of beliefs to a very different set of beliefs. For other participants, their beliefs changed in more subtle ways. Learning from these kinds of change are important and necessary for reforms to become sustainable and successful (Cohen & Hill, 2001). I also find that making teaching decisions public was a significant catalyst for why beliefs were changed.

Lower Body Kinetics During the Delivery Phase of the Rotational Shot Put Technique

release date: Jan 01, 2011
Lower Body Kinetics During the Delivery Phase of the Rotational Shot Put Technique
The purpose of this study was to measure the change in joint energy of the hip, knee and ankle of the right and left leg, in the sagittal plane during the delivery phase of the rotational shot put. We hypothesized that (1) throwers who produced a greater total hip energy change would have greater horizontal displacement and (2) throwers who produced a higher ratio of hip energy, in each leg independently, would produce greater horizontal displacement. Subjects (n = 8) must have been right-handed, collegiate or post collegiate level throwers trained in the rotational technique. Vicon Nexus System (Denver, CO, USA) used six MX13+, two F20, two T20 cameras recorded at 240 Hz, and the body Plug-in Gait model to track the body position during each trial. Two AMTI force plates (OR-6, Watertown, MA, USA) were used for collecting ground reaction force data at 960 Hz. A linear regression analysis was performed to determine a relationship between total hip energy change and horizontal displacement. A mixed model regression was used to determine any correlation between horizontal distance and left and right energy change ratios. Athletes who produced a greater total hip energy change had the greatest horizontal displacement (p = .022). Also throwers who produced a higher ratio of left hip energy change to total left leg energy produced the greatest horizontal displacement (p = .02). The ratio of right hip energy change to right leg energy change was found to not be significant to horizontal displacement (p = .955). We feel the findings on the left leg energy change are an attempt by the athlete to both accelerate the shot put as well as stop the rotational progression to allow the athlete to complete a fair throw. The athlete extending both the right and the left hip rapidly during the delivery phase can help explain the combined right and left hip energy change. This action accelerates the ball in a proximal-distal sequence, which allows athletes to reach high final shot put velocities. The higher the final velocity on the shot put positively correlates with the horizontal displacement.

The Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Novel Inhibitors of Protein Biogenesis at the Endoplasmic Reticulum

release date: Jan 01, 2011
The Synthesis and Biological Evaluation of Novel Inhibitors of Protein Biogenesis at the Endoplasmic Reticulum
Biosynthesis and folding of proteins entering the secretory pathway of eukaryotic cells is coordinated at the endoplasmic reticulum (ER). Any terminally misfolded proteins are sorted for the endoplasmic reticulum associated degradation (ERAD) pathway for destruction. Eeyarestatin I (ESI) is a potent inhibitor of certain stages of protein biogenesis at the ER including protein translocation across the ER and deubiquitination, a late stage of the ERAD process. Here several structurally related Eeyarestatins (ES) were synthesised based on key structural requirements shown in ESI and the structural activity relationship of these compounds both in vivo and in vitro was investigated. Experiments conducted included: cytotoxicity to determine toxicity of ES compounds at several concentrations; cell microscopy to identify vacuole formation frequently exhibited by ESI; SDS page electrophoresis and western blotting for ubiquitin to ascertain the extent of accumulation of ubiquitinated protein and indicator of inhibition of deubiquitination; a translocation block assay looking to determine the inhibitory effect the ES compounds have on translocation of selected proteins across the ER membrane; and finally a secretion assay to determine the ES compound's ability to block overall secretion of proteins from cells. Whilst none of the 'new' analogues seem to be equipotent to ESI in all inhibitory activities, inhibitory activity of compounds ES40, ES24 Click meta and ES24 Click para appear to be more specific towards DUBs, with ES40 being the most active.

Living with Cancer in the Flow of the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola
"This single case study uses a narrative approach to explore the personal and spiritual experience of a woman diagnosed with advanced breast cancer. Previous to this diagnosis, this woman had completed the Spiritual Exercises of Ignatius Loyola. The data for this study was collected by way of tape-recorded, in-depth, unstructured interviews which took place over a six-month period. It has been written up in the form of a personal narrative and analysed using significant elements from the Spiritual Exercises. This study establishes that the Spiritual Exercises have had a formative place in this woman's life and have assisted in her quest for meaning."--Abstract, p. ix.
