Everyone Needs A Lyft

release date: Sep 07, 2022
Everyone Needs A Lyft
Everyone Needs a Lyft: My Thirty-Day Odyssey as a Lyft Driver is a collection of thirty short stories that are largely conversations between a Lyft driver (Matthew) and his passengers. The stories are mostly verbatim dialogues presented with minimal commentary added to the end of each story chapter. The setting of this ride-share odyssey is the Ypsilanti/Ann Arbor area of southeast Michigan. The stories were assembled from rides provided to Lyft passengers from September 27th to October 27th, 2021. Each original story was captured on the day indicated and presented in chronological order. Pseudonyms are used to disguise the Lyft passengers and the dialogues are carefully edited to protect passenger privacy. Each original story has been written by the author. This book is about how people adapted to life and work during the Covid-19 pandemic. It explains how Lyft rideshare works from a driver's perspective. Finally, it is a book about compassion, change, and serendipity, the natural accidents that make our lives extraordinary and compelling.

Paint Your Town Red

release date: May 11, 2021
Paint Your Town Red
Paint Your Town Red tells the story of how one city in the north of England decided to level up without waiting for Whitehall. Across the world, there is a growing recognition that a new kind of economy is needed: more democratic, less exploitative, less destructive of society and the planet. Paint Your Town Red looks at how wealth can be generated and shared at a local level through the experience of one of the main advocates of the new Democratic Economy, Matthew Brown, the driving-force behind the world-recognized Preston Model. Using analysis, interviews and case studies to explain what Matthew and Preston City Council have done over the last decade in order to earn Preston the title of Most Improved City, the book shows how the model can be adapted to fit different local circumstances, as well as demonstrating how Preston itself adapted economic and democratic experiments in ‘community wealth-building’ from elsewhere in the US and Europe. Preston’s success shows that the ideas of community wealth-building work in practice and have the capacity to achieve a meaningful transfer of wealth and power back to local communities. A lot of recent coverage and references have tended to oversimplify the Preston Model, which is not just about ‘buying local’ but a comprehensive project, which envisions local and regional discussions and collaboration adding up to a wholesale transformation of our currently failing economic systems.

Thou Art That

release date: Aug 31, 2018
Thou Art That
In Thou Art That Matthew Leavitt Brown offers lyrical insights into the complicated ways memory shapes us before, during, and after terminal illness. Through a braided network of individual and disembodied voices, Brown exemplifies a sense of how time, loss, and grief comingle to form a new presence that comes to both fill and haunt the void left by the death of a loved one. Written during the long-term illness and passing of several of his immediate family members, as well as during a prolonged illness of his own, these poems capture something important about the spiritual alienation and search for purpose that necessarily accompany our collective condition of human frailty.

From Frontiers to Football

release date: Aug 15, 2014
From Frontiers to Football
With Brazil hosting the FIFA World Cup this summer and the Olympic Games in 2016, all eyes are on Latin America. But what vision of these countries will we be given? Will our airwaves be full of cultural stereotypes about Latin Americans and inaccurate interpretations of the region’s position in the world? In From Frontiers to Football, Matthew Brown provides a much-needed historical analysis to rebut misconceptions about Latin America’s past while giving readers the tools with which to understand the region’s complex present. Telling the story of Latin America’s engagement with global empires from 1800 to today, From Frontiers to Football is as much a narrative of repeated cycles, continued dependency, and thwarted dreams as it is a tale of imperial designs overthrown, colonial armies defeated, and other successes that have inspired colonized peoples across the globe. Brown restores a cultural history to the continent, giving as much attention to pop singer Shakira and retired footballer Pelé as he does to coffee producers, copper miners, government policies, and covert imperialism. Latin America, Brown shows, is no longer a frontier or periphery, but rather is at the forefront of innovation and a global center for social, cultural, and economic activities. Clear and readable, From Frontiers to Football presents a compelling introduction to the history of Latin America’s interactions with the world over the last two centuries.

Graphic Influence

release date: Dec 17, 2020
Graphic Influence
Drawn entirely during C-Virus time, as we are all pushed back into our own minds and internal landscapes, what are the dimensions of our hysterical mythologies? Brown redeploys the images that shaped him as a child, as Kirby's X-Men, Miller's Elektra, Chaykin's Star Wars, Schulz's Peanuts crew and Moebius' Arzack and others collide and cavort in a landscape of modern and ancient architecture.
