Baptists are not often thought of as leading theologians and practitioners of worship. But forgotten in history is one crucial fact: the Baptist tradition formed out of a desire to worship God purely. Early Baptists devoted immense energy to questions of worship and drew conclusions of even contemporary value. Through the seismic liturgical shifts of English society in the seventeenth century, worship was both their most galvanizing and disintegrating impulse. As time passed and terminology changed and Baptists shied away from this divisive topic, this emphasis was lost. No one today considers worship a Baptist distinctive. Pure Worship re-creates the fascinating historical context of the early years of the English Baptists. Examining many thousands of manuscript pages, Matthew Ward pieces together an entire theology of worship that not only guided the early Baptists but also attracted the attention of many elements of English Christianity. Baptist thoughts on worship were neither minor nor tangential but the very heart of what distinguished them from the rest of England. Pure Worship offers a complete reenvisioning of what it meant to be an early Baptist and reveals their overwhelming desire to be known as pure worshippers of God.

This thesis develops a theory of arithmetic Fourier-Mukai transforms in order to obtain results about equivalences between the derived category of Calabi-Yau varieties over non-algebraically closed fields. We obtain answers to classical questions from number theory and arithmetic geometry using these results. The main results of this thesis come in three types. The first concerns classifying moduli of vector bundles on genus one curves. Fourier-Mukai equivalences of genus one curves allow us to produce examples of non-isomorphic moduli spaces when a genus one curve has large period. The next result extends the result of Lieblich-Olsson which says that derived equivalent K3 surfaces are moduli spaces of sheaves over algebraically closed fields. We get the same result over arbitrary fields of characteristic different from 2. The last class of results are about finding properties that are preserved under derived equivalence for Calabi-Yau threefolds. Examples of such arithmetic invariants include local Zeta functions, modularity, L-series, and the a-number. We then prove a Serre-Tate theory for liftable, ordinary Calabi-Yau threefolds in positive characteristic in order to show that the derived equivalence induces an isomorphism of their deformation functors that sends the canonical lift of one to the canonical lift of the other.

This dissertation casts a wide net in order to explain the recent emergence and proliferation of the contemporary anti-immigration movement in the United States. Anti-immigration activism is an understudied but not entirely overlooked phenomenon. Yet, we know incredibly little about an important set of macro- and micro- questions related to contemporary anti-immigration activism. This dissertation addresses big-picture mobilization questions, such as: What large-scale, historical preconditions set the stage for the emergence and proliferation of contemporary anti-immigration activism in the United States? And how--and through what general processes--has pro-migrant countermobilization influenced the anti-immigration movement and, perhaps, unintentionally spurred its growth? Finally, I address micro-level questions focused around the mechanics of micromobilization: How and why do individuals support anti-immigration activism? How and why do individuals become motivated to engage in anti-immigration activity? and How and why do individuals ultimately participate in anti-immigration-related activism? In sum, both big-picture and small-scale questions anchor this dissertation. By answering these I not only shed light on this specific case but also make a number of more general contributions to social movement literature.
