The Oxford Book of Story Poems
How many of one's favorite poems are story poems? This is a wonderful collection of over sixty narratives in verse with thrilling tales, silly nonsense rhymes, tragic poems that will keep you in suspense, and funny, quirky poems that will delight over and over again. All the classic poems you would expect to see are here, such as 'Jabberwocky', 'The Pied Piper of Hamelin', 'The Highwayman', 'The Lady of Shalott', and 'The Owl and the Pussycat' and these combine with more modern but equally satisfying poems to make a rich and varied anthology. Five Minutes to Midnight

release date: Dec 09, 2020
Five Minutes to Midnight
As the world struggles to contain Covid-19 and cope with the economic carnage left by the pandemic, what lessons can we learn from the way the 2008 financial crisis was averted and Britain's banks were kept afloat? This true-life thriller puts you in the room with ministers, mandarins, City watchdogs - and the disgraced bankers themselves - as they raced to save Royal Bank of Scotland, then the world's biggest lender, and the rest of the British banking industry from collapse. They had to prevent the contagion spreading uncontrollably from the financial sector to the real economy. Then, as now, they had to discover a vaccine and they needed to find it fast. Drawing on exclusive and extensive interviews with Gordon Brown, Alistair Darling, Mervyn King and other central figures, including government ministers, Whitehall advisers, top civil servants, central bankers, regulators and bank CEOs, Five Minutes to Midnight takes you inside Number 10 Downing Street, the Treasury and the boardrooms of Britain's biggest financial institutions. It also takes you across the world into the White House and the chambers of the IMF and G7 as Brown and Darling criss-cross the globe urging other governments to use the British rescue plan as a blueprint for their own ailing economies. Day by day, hour by hour, it recounts the mounting tensions, the personality clashes, the stand-offs, the bitter arguments and the brinkmanship as financiers and politicians lock horns with one another and sometimes with themselves. The future may look bleak but Five Minutes to Midnight shows that with the political will, a crisis does not have to turn into a catastrophe.

Storage Theory and the Suprema of Certain Infinitely Divisible Processes

Storage Theory and the Suprema of Certain Infinitely Divisible Processes
Let X = (X(t), t> or = O) be a process with stationary, independent increments and no negative jumps. Let W = (W(t), t> or = O) be this same process modified by a reflecting barrier at zero (a storage process). Assuming that -E(X(t)) = mu> O, let M = sup(X(t):t> or = O), and denote by Phi(Alpha) the exponent function of X.A simple formula is derived for the Laplace transform of E(W(t)), t> or =, as a function of W(O).

Investigating Sorbent Geometry Response Surfaces from Sorption Rate Data

release date: Mar 01, 1998
Investigating Sorbent Geometry Response Surfaces from Sorption Rate Data
Sorption and desorption of hydrophobic organic compounds (HOCs) into soil particles occurs at Air Force contamination sites. Long-term desorption extends clean up time, costing billions. Accurately modeling desorption will reduce costs and improve clean up designs. State of the art models depict soil as uniform spherical particles which lose the effect of longer sorption path lengths. An alternate approach, the multiple sites in series (MSS) model, describes the sorption capacity of a mixture of soil particle sizes and shapes using a composite particle defined by a two parameter statistical distribution. When the MSS model uses a general radial geometry function as the statistical distribution, unique parameters can not be fit to laboratory experimental data. This research employs response surface methodology (RSM) to investigate the non- unique parameter model deficiency. Analysis shows that the response surface for the general radial geometry function is a trough with no unique minimum. A unique minimum is found when the statistical distribution is changed to a gamma distribution.
