release date: Jun 22, 2017
Home Canning Recipes
This book is chocked full of great canning recipes collected and compiled in a complete easy to read format. This book contains a history of home canning. It also contains all that you need to know on how to both water bath can and pressure can your foods at home. We have included information on the safety factors needed for home canning, including illustrations. Fruits, vegetables, sauces, jams, jellies, meat and seafood are all included. We have included recipes for canning meats and seafood that hunters and fishermen will find very useful. We have also found recipes for obscure items like kelp and prickly pear cactus, not to mention lots of beet recipes. During World War I and II canning became essential to homemakers due to food shortages. Advances in technology brought forth an abundance of foods in the 1950''s. Along with the introduction of frozen foods in the 1950s and 1960''s, and the improvement in transporting those frozen foods, home canning dropped off until the 1970''s, when there was a brief resurgence because of the desire to be more self sufficient. Today however, home canning is making a comeback. With the cost of food in the supermarket, and the rising costs of transporting that food, home canning is back. Preppers and survivalists have embraced home canning as a way to prepare for future food shortages. Home canning can be a safe, economical way to preserve quality food at home.

Culture, Agency Costs, and Governance

release date: Jan 01, 2017
Culture, Agency Costs, and Governance
We examine the impact of two defining social characteristics (individualism and risk aversion) and their interaction with governance and firm agency problems on capital structure in the G20 countries. With a sample of roughly 13,000 firms from 1995 to 2009, we show that higher levels of individualism are associated with increased firm use of debt and lower cost of capital, whereas higher risk aversion has the opposite effects. All else equal, better firm-level governance substantially reduces these cultural effects, as does larger firm size, and less research-intensity at the firm. To address endogeneity concerns, we use a propensity score matching procedure and show that our results continue to hold. Our results are also robust to alternative measures of culture, firm-level governance and agency costs, debt cost of capital, bankruptcy risk, identification concerns, and other country level effects.

During the Vietnam War, the Que Son Valley region was a very bad place with a very bad reputation. More U.S. Army infantrymen and Marines died there than at any other location in Vietnam. More Medals of Honor were awarded in this region than in any other single combat zone, ever. On 5 May 1968, the downing of two U.S. helicopters in the Que Son Valley marked the beginning of the North Vietnamese Army’s second Tet offensive, with the goal of destroying all U.S. forces. At 1728 hours, Delta Company, 1st Battalion, 20th Infantry conducted a combat air assault to join Bravo Company, 1st Battalion, 6th Infantry at the helicopters'' fatally downed location. Their experiences during the next six days set the stage for a three-month long battle that lasted only hours for some. In the end, there would be more than 2,300 dead and wounded, and one American Soldier missing in action. It will take over 44 years to find his location; UNACCOUNTED is his story. Keywords: Missing in Action, MIA, Infantryman, Vietnam, POW, Mission, Unaccounted, War

To My Children

release date: Apr 21, 2015
To My Children
Reaching across the chasm of his bipolar disorder and separation from his children, Chad shares with us his deepest and most intimate thoughts for his childrens spiritual future. Sometimes using his own experiences to model a lesson and at other times clearly relying on spiritual depths, Chad teaches his children those life lessons that were missing from his life as he grew up, lessons he has learned in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. With an unfathomable love for his children, his teachings range from the simple, such as faith and hope, to the more complex and controversial, such as how Christians and the LGBT community should treat each other and the role of just governments in our lives. Chad leaves almost nothing out with regards to how Christians should behave and what their ultimate relationship to Deity will be if they will hearken to the Gospel. Thoughtfully looking into basic Christian Doctrines and the potential of humanity, To My Children: Love, Dad puts you into a position to explore your own relationship with Deity and encourages you to bring the family along the path to Heaven beginning today.

Organizing Democratic Choice

release date: Jun 28, 2012
Organizing Democratic Choice
This bold venture into democratic theory offers a new and reinvigorating thesis for how democracy delivers on its promise of public control over public policy. In theory, popular control could be achieved through a process entirely driven by supply-side politics, with omniscient and strategic political parties converging on the median voter''s policy preference at every turn. However, this would imply that there would be no distinguishable political parties (or even any reason for parties to exist) and no choice for a public to make. The more realistic view taken here portrays democracy as an ongoing series of give and take between political parties'' policy supply and a mass public''s policy demand. Political parties organize democratic choices as divergent policy alternatives, none of which is likely to satisfy the public''s policy preferences at any one turn. While the one-off, short-run consequence of a single election often results in differences between the policies that parliaments and governments pursue and the preferences their publics hold, the authors construct theoretical arguments, employ computer simulations, and follow up with empirical analysis to show how, why, and under what conditions democratic representation reveals itself over time. Democracy, viewed as a process rather than a single electoral event, can and usually does forge strong and congruent linkages between a public and its government. This original thesis offers a challenge to democratic pessimists who would have everyone believe that neither political parties nor mass publics are up to the tasks that democracy assigns them. Comparative Politics is a series for students, teachers, and researchers of political science that deals with contemporary government and politics. Global in scope, books in the series are characterised by a stress on comparative analysis and strong methodological rigour. The series is published in association with the European Consortium for Political Research. For more information visit: www.ecprnet.eu The Comparative Politics series is edited by Professor David M. Farrell, School of Politics and International Relations, University College Dublin, Kenneth Carty, Professor of Political Science, University of British Columbia, and Professor Dirk Berg-Schlosser, Institute of Political Science, Philipps University, Marburg.

The Marketplace of Democracy

release date: Jan 01, 2006
The Marketplace of Democracy
" Since 1998, U.S. House incumbents have won a staggering 98 percent of their reelection races. Electoral competition has also declined in some state and primary elections. The Marketplace for Democracy combines the resources of two eminent research organizations--Brookings and the Cato Institute--to address several important questions about our democratic system. How pervasive is the lack of competition in arenas only previously speculated on, such as state legislative contests and congressional primaries? What have previous reform efforts, such as direct primaries and term limits, had on electoral competition? What are the effects of redistricting and campaign finance regulation? What role do third parties play? In sum, what does all this tell us about what might be done to increase electoral competition? The authors, including a number of today''s most important scholars in American politics, consider the historical development, legal background, and political aspects of a system that is supposed to be responsive and accountable yet for many is becoming stagnant, self-perpetuating, and tone-deaf. How did we get to this point, and what--if anything--should be done about it? Elections are the vehicles through which Americans choose who governs them, and the power of the ballot is still the best lever ordinary citizens have in keeping public officials accountable. The Marketplace of Democracy considers different policy options for increasing the competition needed to keep American politics vibrant, responsive, and democratic. Contributors include Stephen Ansolabehere (MIT), William D. Berry (Florida State University), Bruce Cain (University of California-Berkeley), Thomas Carsey (Florida StateUniversity) James Gimpel (University of Maryland) John Hanley (UC-Berkeley), John Mark Hansen (University of Chicago), Paul S.
