The Peninsula Campaign of 1862

release date: Jan 08, 2010
The Peninsula Campaign of 1862
The largest offensive of the Civil War, involving army, navy, and marine forces, the Peninsula Campaign has inspired many history books. No previous work, however, analyzes Union general George B. McClellan''s massive assault toward Richmond in the context of current and enduring military doctrine. The Peninsula Campaign of 1862: A Military Analysis fills this void. Background history is provided for continuity, but the heart of this book is military analysis and the astonishing extent to which the personality traits of generals often overwhelm even the best efforts of their armies. The Peninsula Campaign lends itself to such a study. Lessons for those studying the art of war are many. On water, the first ironclads forever changed naval warfare. At the strategic level, McClellan''s inability to grasp Lincoln''s grand objective becomes evident. At the operational level, Robert E. Lee''s difficulty in synchronizing his attacks deepens the mystique of how he achieved so much with so little. At the tactical level, the Confederate use of terrain to trade space for time allows for a classic study in tactics. Moreover, the campaign is full of lessons about the personal dimension of war. McClellan''s overcaution, Lee''s audacity, and Jackson''s personal exhaustion all provide valuable insights for today''s commanders and for Civil War enthusiasts still debating this tremendous struggle. Historic photos and detailed battle maps make this study an invaluable resource for those touring the many battlegrounds from Young''s Mill and Yorktown through Fair Oaks to the final throes of the Seven Days'' Battles.

release date: Aug 26, 2008
Mike's Election Guide
In his first book in five years, the man loved by liberals and denounced by conservatives, brings us the definitive guide to the 2008 election. After a diastrous war, the failure to catch bin Laden, millions of families who have lost their homes, the Katrina debacle, soaring gas prices feeding record oil company profits, and the largest national debt caused by the biggest spending and borrowing administration in American history, the country has had it with conservatives, right-wingers and Republicans. A thrilling election season is now upon us. Obama vs. McCain. One candidate has promised a presidency different from any other, one that will take us forward to embrace the hope of the 21st century. The other candidate says he has no idea how to use a computer. Welcome to Mike''s Election Guide -- Michael Moore''s effort to make sense of the this fall''s race for the White House and Congress. In it, Moore answers the nation''s most pressing questions: "Why is John McCain so angry?," "Do the Democrats Still Drink from a Sippy Cup and Sleep with the Light On?," Can I get into the Electoral College with only a 2.0 gpa?"" and "How many Democrats does it take to lose the most winnable election in American history?" It''s a great year to be an American and a voter. Don''t miss out on all the fun! And don''t miss out on Mike''s Election Guide -- it''s the indispensable book that belongs in every American''s back pocket this season. "

When to Pollute, when to Abate?

release date: Jan 01, 2008
When to Pollute, when to Abate?
Intertemporal tradability allows an emissions market to reduce abatement costs. We study intertemporal trading of nitrogen oxides permits in the RECLAIM program in Southern California. A theoretical model captures the program''s key intertemporal features: two overlapping permit cycles, two compliance cycles for facilities, and tradable permits. We characterize the competitive equilibrium; show that it is cost effective; and demonstrate the firms'' incentive to delay abatement, i.e., to trade intertemporally. Using model extensions to explore market design issues, an arbitrage condition implies that the equilibrium is invariant to overlapping compliance cycles, but depends crucially on overlapping permit cycles. We empirically investigate intertemporal trading of permits using panel data on RECLAIM facilities for 1994-2006. Facilities undertake trading by using a considerable proportion of permits of the opposite cycle. We econometrically test two theoretical propositions -- delayed abatement and trading across cycles -- with a difference-in-differences estimator. The results neither contradict nor provide conclusive support of the theory.

release date: Jul 07, 2005
Will They Ever Trust Us Again?
Will They Ever Trust Us Again? brings together hundreds of never-before-published letters that Mike has been sent - from GIs serving in Iraq and Afghanistan, from troops in US bases, from their mothers, wives and friends back home, from veterans who''ve fought around the globe - to show the reality beneath the political spin and TV propaganda. Their politics may vary from the Bushwhacked to the patriotic, but they all feel let down and lied to by government, they know the human cost of waging wars for the rich - and now they''ve had enough. Explosive, angry, moving and funny, this book shows who''s really winning the battle for hearts and minds on the front line.

Stupid White Men

release date: May 11, 2004
Stupid White Men
In the winter of 2002, Stupid White Men took America -- and the world -- by storm. Tired and skeptical of George W. Bush''s high approval ating, frightened by the implications of the Enron scandal -- and generally just looking for a voice of honest dissent in the thick atmosphere of jingoism that followed 9/11 -- book buyers from coast to coast swiftly embraced Michael Moore''s in-your-face anti-Bush-era manifesto, making it one of the bestselling nonfiction books of the year. With an unerring eye for greed, hypocrisy, and corruption, Michael Moore takes on the whole ugly mess of America at the dawn of the twenty-first century. Whether he''s demanding U.N. action to overthrow the Bush Family Junta or calling on African Americans to place whites only signs over the entrances of unfriendly businesses, Stupid White Men is a pitch-perfect skewering of our culture of Malfeasance and Mediocrity.
