Concord and the Dawn of Revolution

release date: Jan 01, 2007
Concord and the Dawn of Revolution
Any red-blooded American knows that the first action of the Revolutionary War took place at Concord, Massachusetts, with the shot heard ''round the world. But a good deal of what is widely known about those early days of the Revolution is wrong. In this new book, historian D. Michael Ryan illuminates acts of uprising of Patriots and Loyalists during the first action of the Revolutionary War in and around Concord. Through a series of compelling essays, Ryan debunks historical myths and salutes those who fought for the recognition of our nation and became the first heroes of the fledgling United States. What was romanticized and changed in the generations since the Revolution is presented here directly through the voices of the people who faced the shocking facts of war and rebellion. From Dr. Samuel Prescott, who joined Paul Revere on his famous ride and left fiancée Lydia Mulliken behind, to the mystery of the Bedford Flag unfurled on April 19, these stories reveal the truths of our founding fathers and mothers. As their lives were interrupted by the birth of a country, the citizens of Concord saw their friends and neighbors engaged in acts of bravery and of depravity. Ryan''s account of the shot heard ''round the world, provides a glimpse at the realities of the American Revolution.

Trump's Sercet Shadows

Trump's Sercet Shadows
Trump''s Secret Shadows: Assault on Our Nation is an unflinching investigative exposé written for the 99% by whistleblower Michael P. Ryan. All Americans deserve greater transparency about threats that corrupt the democratic process and hamper free and fair elections. Every citizen''s vote is a secure ballot backed by faith that our democracy will withstand attacks on multiple fronts. These threats include systems-based vulnerabilities in our software voting systems, super PACs that allow the super- wealthy to diminish the power of small donors, and interference in our nation''s electoral process-as treacherously evident in the insurrection of January 6th, a day immortalized as the darkest chapter in our nation''s history. This must-read book points out what''s wrong with our nation''s elections. Michael P. Ryan gives you a personal account of how a one percenter, a self-proclaimed patriot with marching orders from the Trump White House, played an important role in the embattled outcome of the 2020 Trump vs. Biden presidential election. 270 won the majority, and 306 electoral votes sealed Biden''s victory, but ardent objectors working secretly in the shadows would be damned.

The Wall
In a not too distant future, an Executive Order will facilitate the erection of a forty foot concrete wall between the United States and Mexico. To build said wall, ?tiny hands? will use Worker Re-Education Centers, or WRECs, filled with illegal immigrants detained by the local authorities. The centers are advertised as an opportunity for thousands to learn English and earn their American Citizenship while contributing to the protection and safety of America. In fact, many immigrants choose to work on the wall in an attempt to fast-track their citizenship and start their new legal life with some cash in the bank. Mexico also receives a cut off their bill that they still refuse to pay. A win-win for everyone, right? Everyone, that is, except for Laz and Tilly Martinez-Baak, and countless couples like them. Inseparable, upstanding members of their Tucson community, both Laz and Tilly fall victim to the prejudiced laws of the land. On his way to teach a high school band class, Laz, a Mexican-American citizen, is arrested without identification and transported to a WREC outside of Naco, Arizona. Meanwhile, his wife returns home from an opening ceremony for the Nogales Liberty Gateway to discover her mate missing; only a cold pizza and wallet remain in her husband''s place. Can she use her celebrity as a local new reporter to get to the bottom of the story? Life''s abrupt redirection forces the severed lovers to utilize every resource at their disposal in a death-defying struggle against inhumanity and the forces that govern it. Will they be able to overcome the powers obstructing their union and conquer the atrocities awaiting them at the Drumpf''s Wall?Find out in The Wall: Part One of the Drumpf Nation Series.

Mitigation Techniques for Aluminum Pool Enclosure Connections in High Wind Speeds

Mitigation Techniques for Aluminum Pool Enclosure Connections in High Wind Speeds
ABSTRACT: Each specimen was tested against windward and uplift forces using an MTS machine capable of delivering axial forces to the specimens. In addition to continuous loading, fatigue loading was utilized to examine connection behavior once the connection was compromised and a load is re-applied. Load and corresponding displacement values were recorded during testing to provide comparable strength capacities for each specimen. In order to determine the probability of connection failure, fragility curves were constructed and interpreted then applied to a financial analysis to achieve benefit-cost ratios. The resulting financial and performance benefits serve as benchmarks for optimal connection configuration. The conclusions obtained from testing will provide valuable information to pool enclosure designers and contractors who hope to get clarification on the ambiguous range of connections used throughout Florida. Since little tangible research has been conducted on pool enclosure connection strength the insight provided by this research could prove useful to the pool enclosure industry.

Nuclear Warmaking and the Treadmill of Destruction Mechanism

release date: Jan 01, 2018
Nuclear Warmaking and the Treadmill of Destruction Mechanism
Nuclear war and environmental collapse are central human challenges. The use of nuclear weapons poses an instantaneous threat to the ecology of the planet, but the creation of these weapons requires complex scientific and industrial processing of the inherently dangerous material uranium that generates a catalog of the most toxic wastes known to humanity. This dissertation identifies patterns of environmental outcomes that are shaped by the historical and social contexts of nuclear warmaking. The United States and the Soviet Union competed in a Cold War nuclear arms race that left a devastating legacy. A "treadmill of destruction" was generated by the inertial expansion and acceleration of an arms race that intensified the quantity and qualitative toxicity of nuclear waste streams. It was the social context of "exterminism" that crystallized in these societies, generating the treadmill of destruction mechanism; not all nuclear weapons production generates this mechanism. The appropriate configuration of antecedent conditions, critical junctures, structural persistence, and reactive sequences combine to produce a path-dependent outcome. The collapse of the Soviet Union did not signal an end to the treadmill of destruction; American and Russian nuclear warmaking has accelerated to unprecedented levels since the late 1990s. The treadmill of destruction mechanism is therefore critical to advancing our understanding of the developing tension between war and society. This tension is investigated in the context of nuclear warmaking as a set of historical processes that generated a unique and in some cases irremediable environmental legacy. The effort to clean up the legacy of these calamities may be one of the most complex and expensive scientific endeavors in human history, and the results so far have been discouraging. The emerging New Cold War urges nations to further modernize their nuclear arsenals, which may create new wastes and stymie meaningful remediation efforts by diverting resources and adding to the burden.

Feeling the Burn

release date: Jan 01, 2022
Feeling the Burn
Previous research has shown that high rates of burnout in human service industries can lead to undesirable outcomes for both behavioral health companies and their clientele (Morse et al., 2012; Thomas et al., 2014). The current study investigates the potential sources of employee burnout among behavioral health professionals in the community-based program at ABS Transitions (ABST), a mid-sized community mental health company in Cincinnati, OH. Utilizing an explanatory sequential mixed methods design, quantitative data were collected using an established burnout survey, The Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS; Maslach & Jackson, 2019). In the second phase of the study, qualitative data were collected through structured interviews with participants in order to discover the company-specific symptoms of burnout at ABST. The final section provides a Logic Model for burnout reduction program at ABST, including the stakeholders, resources, and organizational interventions based on Organizational Behavior Management (OBM) principles. The results of the study and the discussion of the findings, recommendations for extensions and future avenues for research, are provided.

A Bouquet of Essays

release date: Jan 01, 2017
A Bouquet of Essays
This bouquet of essays contains four chapters. In the first chapter I present a brief summary of the literature of misspecified models. I discuss what various estimators are actually estimating when the model is misspecified. Further I discuss corrections to standard errors and when they are useful. I briefly cover hypothesis testing in the presence of misspecified models. I cover both frequentist and Bayesian approached. I show that a misspecified model can indeed be useful and discuss some misconceptions with misspecified models. The second chapter investigates the impact of misspecification in discrete choice models. I derive necessary and sufficient conditions for consistency of the maximum likelihood estimator from the misspecified model. A corollary is that the misspecified estimator is consistent for the correct sign, under certain conditions. It also follows that Huber-White standard errors can be used to obtain asymptotically conservative type one errors when testing the nullity of the coefficient. The third chapter builds a Bayesian model for multiple-output quantiles using a commonly accepted definition for the quantile. The prior can be elicited as the ex-ante knowledge of Tukey depth, the first prior of its kind. I apply the model to the Tennessee Project STAR experiment and find there is a joint increase in all quantile subpopulations for reading and mathematics scores given a decrease in the number of students per teacher. This result is consistent with, and much stronger than, the results from previous studies. The four chapter I investigate if United States Supreme Court Justices recuse themselves strategically. I create a new structural model of recusals. Using this model I find causal evidence that justices recuse themselves strategically. I then calibrate and simulate the model to find the frequency of cases where at least one justice has a conflict of interest but does not recuse. I find at most 47% of cases have at least one justice with a conflict of interest that did not recuse. It was difficult to come up with an overarching theme for this bouquet of essays---hence the title. The closest theme would be ''model misspecification.'' The first chapter provides an overview of misspecified models, the second chapter investigates a misspecified discrete choice models and the third chapter purposefully uses a misspecified model to get an interesting estimator. However, the closest the fourth chapter gets to ''model misspecification'' is the use of the Kullback-Leibler distance in a simulation. The Kullback-Leibler distance is often used in the misspecified literature but there is nothing about the distance that makes it inherently related to misspecified models.

University-Community Partnerships as Learning Organizations

release date: Jan 01, 2018
University-Community Partnerships as Learning Organizations
The goals of University-Community Partnerships (UCPs) are often not fully achieved due to limited financial or human resource commitments, a change in leadership, or different/changing priorities (Bortolin, 2011; Bushouse, 2005; Dempsey, 2010). Often, the differences in culture, decision-making and adaptation preferences of the participating organizations prevent the formation of a strong, productive working relationship (Callahan & Martin, 2007). This study sought to understand the different organizational learning preferences these diverse participants have within a UCP. Data derived from this study evidenced that while there are organizational learning preference similarities among members of particular segments, there are also differences across and within the various segments that often form UCPs. This study used organizational learning theory and constructs to further the knowledge in understanding the challenges experienced by UCPs, with the goal to offer guidance as to how these partnerships can be more successfully developed and sustained. This study used the Organizational Learning System Model (OLSM) by Schwandt & Marquardt (1999) as a construct to identify the similarities and differences in learning preferences among organizations that potentially form UCPs. An interpretive approach was used to describe and understand the phenomenon through semi-structured interviews conducted among 25 experienced UCP participants from higher education, corporate, non-profit and public entities. Thematic coding, pattern matching and explanation methods were used to show the organizational learning preferences, at both the individual and segment level to illustrate similarities and differences. The research identified overarching themes (power dynamics, decision-making, effective communication, and the role of leadership) that impact the OLSM in a holistic manner. These themes influence overall success and the ability of the UCP to function as a learning organization. The study also revealed that the typical segments (higher education, corporations and non-profits) that form UCPs do not share the same organizational learning preferences. These differences are potential areas of conflict and disagreement within a UCP, causing the UCP to fall short of expectations. The findings of this study will inform the development of OLSM best practices for UCP participants that can be shared and delivered in a conference or workshop setting. Future research related to this study could include a more focused study on the impact that the overarching themes have on the OLSM, participant preferences versus behaviors in a longitudinal study, or a deeper understanding of segment typology. A new study of specific UCPs in River City or other sites that use the constructs described in this study would further expand and test the insights delivered in this dissertation.
