Control data, however, suggested that the distinct cytoarchitecture of hippocampal regions influences the observed diffusion properties of water. To assess the validity of the hippocampal slice model, a final study measured water diffusion in human hippocampal slices procured from epilepsy patients. This human tissue had normal electrophysiological responses and exhibited similar water diffusion properties to rat hippocampal slices. Data in this dissertation indicate that water diffusion studies in rat hippocampal slices have clinical relevance and provide interesting insights into the diffusion properties of water in normal and acutely injured brain. This work should aid the development of working models of water diffusion in nervous tissue, leading to an improved clinical utility for diffusion MRI.
