On The Slow Train

release date: Apr 01, 2010
On The Slow Train
''A trip back in time'' DAILY TELEGRAPH A love of railways, a love of history, a love of nostalgia. ______________________________ Get ready to board the slow train to another era, to a time when travel meant more than hurrying from one place to the next. On the Slow Train will reconnect you with that long-missed need for escape, and reminds us to lift our heads from the daily grind and remember that there are still places in Britain where we can take the time to stop and stare. This book is a paean to another age: before milk churns, train porters and cats on seats were replaced by security announcements and Burger King wrappers. These 12 spectacular journeys will help free us from what Baudelaire denounced as ''the horrible burden of time.'' ___________________________________ ''Captivating'' SUNDAY EXPRESS ''Deep in our soul, the railways represent an idyll that we love'' INDEPENDENT ''A magical world, barely changed since the golden age of rail'' DAILY MAIL ''Superb'' RAILYWAY MAGAZINE ''Memory lane . . . Chieftaincy, the State, and Democracy

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Chieftaincy, the State, and Democracy
As South Africa consolidates its democracy, chieftaincy has remained a controversial and influential institution that has adapted to recent changes. J. Michael Williams examines the chieftaincy and how it has sought to assert its power since the end of apartheid. By taking local-level politics seriously and looking closely at how chiefs negotiate the new political order, Williams takes a position between those who see the chieftaincy as an indigenous democratic form deserving recognition and protection, and those who view it as incompatible with democracy. Williams describes a network of formal and informal accommodations that have influenced the ways state and local authorities interact. By focusing on local perceptions of the chieftaincy and its interactions with the state, Williams reveals an ongoing struggle for democratization at the local and national levels in South Africa.

Synthesis of Optically Active [alpha]-amino Acids

release date: Jan 01, 1989
Synthesis of Optically Active [alpha]-amino Acids
The purpose of this book is to review and critically evaluate the best new methods to synthesize alpha-amino acids in optically active form. There is so much new literature on amino acid synthesis that the experimentalist will undoubtedly have difficulty in selecting the most appropriate methodology for constructing the amino acid of immediate interest. This book is a guide for steering the scientist through the maze of existing reports on the subject and contains the most up-to-date critical reviews of methods of asymmetric synthesis of amino acids. In areas that are relatively new conceptually and less studied experimentally, an effort has been made to review the most salient works with an eye towards future development. Over 330 schemes and figures are presented with references for rapid visual retrieval of information. The book will be of great value to academic and industrial organic research chemists, especially those concerned with medicinal and agricultural chemistry, as well as to graduate and post graduate students, biochemists and biologists.

The Eighth Man

release date: Jul 18, 2002
The Eighth Man
When Frankie Opperman - surfer, rugby captain, and Helderkloof High''s golden boy - is found drowned in the school pool, Jake Mulligan is called to investigate. He finds himself at the heart of a school in crisis, yet no one seems willing to help. Why the baffling silence from Frankie''s former friends? Is the cool barrier put up by Frankie''s recently-dumped girlfriend just her nature? When Jake turns to the flirtatious Diana Polesky, who seems to be courting expulsion, and then to the eccentric but much-loved English teacher, the investigations take an unexpected twist. Michael Williams''s latest novel tells a tense and brilliantly choreographed story that weaves its way through school rivalry and racism, loyalty, betrayal, and initiation into young adulthood with extraordinary insight and realism.
