Lady of the Lines

release date: Apr 08, 2025
Lady of the Lines
When scientist and explorer Maria Reiche visited Peru’s Nazca Lines in 1941, she was immediately captivated by the larger-than-life animal carvings. But what were they, and why were they there? This STEAM nonfiction picture book for young readers reveals the story behind one of the greatest indigenous artworks in the Americas, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Maria Reiche wanted to put her curious mind to the test. When visiting Peru in 1941, she trekked across the land and discovered hidden lines covered in centuries of clay and sand. Fasciated, she picked up a broom from her tools and began sweeping for miles and miles to uncover more details, taking time to track her movement and sketch out the precise shapes she followed. Her first discovery was a spider-shaped carving spanning hundreds of feet of desert! Sweeping her way across the land, other shapes followed—a monkey, a condor, and a whale. But in the midst of these discoveries, she found out the land was going to be used for farming. She got to work again, this time demanding a press conference to announce her discoveries and stop the destruction of these ancient works of art—and it worked! Her efforts protected the land, which was later named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1994 thanks to Maria’s tireless efforts. Author Michaela MacColl’s lyrical writing and extensive research showcase Maria’s triumphant tale, accompanied by art from Peruvian illustrator Elisa Chavarri, a past recipient of the Pura Belpré Honor.

The Price of Freedom

release date: Nov 28, 2023
The Price of Freedom
A free ebook version of this title is available through Luminos, University of California Press''s Open Access publishing program. Visit www.luminosoa.org to learn more. Seeking to shed light on how we might end mass incarceration, The Price of Freedom compares the histories and goals of the American and German justice systems. Drawing on repeated in-depth interviews with incarcerated young men in the United States and Germany, Michaela Soyer argues that the apparent relative lenience of the German criminal justice system is actually founded on the violent enforcement of cultural homogeneity at the hands of the German welfare state. Demonstrating how both societies have constructed a racialized underclass of outsiders over time, this book emphasizes that criminal justice reformers in the United States need to move beyond European models in order to build a truly just, diverse society.

Evaluation of the Cross-lingual Embedding Models from the Lexicographic Perspective

release date: Jun 29, 2023
Evaluation of the Cross-lingual Embedding Models from the Lexicographic Perspective
Cross-lingual embedding models (CMs) enable us to transfer lexical knowledge across languages. Therefore, they represent a useful approach for retrieving translation equivalents in lexicography. However, these models have been mainly oriented towards the natural language processing (NLP) field, lacking proper evaluation with error evaluation datasets that were compiled automatically. This causes discrepancies between models hindering the correct interpretation of the results. In this paper, we aim to address these issues and make these models more accessible for lexicography by evaluating them from a lexicographic point of view. We evaluate three benchmark CMs on three diverse language pairs: close, distant, and different script languages. Additionally, we propose key parameters that the evaluation dataset should include to meet lexicographic needs, have reproducible results, accurately reflect the performance, and set appropriate parameters during training. Our code and evaluation datasets are publicly available.

Event of Signature

release date: Aug 01, 2022
Event of Signature
Event of Signature formulates a new philosophical problem which focuses on the handwritten signature as sign of legal identification. Author Michaela Fišerová works with three metaphysical expectations, which are shared in discourses of graphology and forensic analysis. The first expectation tends to reveal the signer''s soul: a handwritten signature "naturally" mirrors the unique psychological qualities of the signer. The second expectation tends to guarantee the originality of the signer''s trace: a handwritten signature proves physical contact between the signed document and the writing tool "authentically" moved by the signer''s hand. The third expectation tends to recognize the signer''s legal identity: a handwritten signature is expected to reproduce the signer''s personal style, which enables identification by legal authorities. In a methodologically inventive and semiotically-based dialogue with Derrida''s deconstruction, Fišerová situates this triple expectation in the interval between life and law. Challenging coverage of this topic finally shows that none of the metaphysical expectations will ever be fulfilled in the event of manual signing. Legal uses of handwritten signature are characterized by the complex aporia of repeating the unrepeatable.

Multispecies Futures

release date: Jun 14, 2022
Multispecies Futures
In light of the dramatic growth and rapid institutionalization of human-animal studies in recent years, it is somewhat surprising that only a small number of publications have proposed practical and theoretical approaches to teaching in this inter- and transdisciplinary field. Featuring eleven original pedagogical interventions from the social sciences and the humanities as well as an epilogue from ecofeminist critic Greta Gaard, the present volume addresses this gap and responds to the demand by both educators and students for pedagogies appropriate for dealing with environmental crises. The theoretical and practical contributions collected here describe new ways of teaching human-animal studies in different educational settings and institutional contexts, suggesting how learners – equipped with key concepts such as agency or relationality – can develop empathy and ethical regard for the more-than-human world and especially nonhuman animals. As the contributors to this volume show, these cognitive and affective goals can be achieved in many curricula in secondary and tertiary education. By providing learners with the tools to challenge human exceptionalism in its various guises and related patterns of domination and exploitation in and outside the classroom, these interventions also contribute to a much-needed transformation not only of today''s educational systems but of society as a whole. This volume is an invitation to beginners and experienced instructors alike, an invitation to (re)consider how we teach human-animal studies and how we could and should prepare learners for an uncertain future in, ideally, a more egalitarian and just multispecies world. With contributions by Roman Bartosch, Liza B. Bauer, Alexandra Böhm, Micha Gerrit Philipp Edlich, Greta Gaard, Björn Hayer, Andreas Hübner, Michaela Keck, Maria Moss, Jobst Paul, Mieke Roscher, Pamela Steen, and Nils Steffensen.

Bae Tales

release date: Nov 30, 2021
Bae Tales
Written from a female perspective, Bae Tales is a collection of empowering poems about women’s self-love and self-worth. According to its author, ladies of all ages can relate to their verses which explore passionate emotions of lust, desire and intense intimacy. Her poetry evokes feelings of happiness, joy and sadness, and lyrics are a celebration of freedom of choice in terms of sexual preference: women should live shamelessly, but at the same time, they must have their right to choose what to do with their bodies when it comes to sexuality. A book that men should read to understand better women and the struggles they go through daily. Based on the real-life experience of the writer, who was 19 years old at the time, this personal and heartbreaking work of literature is one of the best ways to gain perspective and understand a woman’s point of view at her most vulnerable. Born under the sign of Taurus, Michaela Kedžuchová was raised by a group of women. Growing up in a world without men and no guidance, she’s become a gentle, full of loving and brave spirit who has taken on the world. Writing has always been an important form of self care for Michaela, helping her through hard times. And, needless to say, this “Amazon” of a woman successfully penned down her thoughts on paper, as some kind of therapy. This work, which was conceived during the later years of her adolescence, addresses important themes concerning self-love and self-worth of women and aims at empowering them.

Leonora in the Morning Light

release date: Apr 06, 2021
Leonora in the Morning Light
*One of Oprah Daily’s Most Anticipated Historical Fiction Novels That Will Sweep You Away* “Michaela Carter’s training as a poet and painter shines through from the first page of this vivid, gorgeous novel based on the lives of Leonora Carrington and Max Ernst. Told with all the wild magic and mystery of the Surrealists themselves, Leonora in the Morning Light fearlessly illuminates the life and work of a formidable female artist.” —Whitney Scharer, bestselling author of The Age of Light For fans of Amy Bloom’s White Houses and Colm Tóibín’s The Master, a “gorgeously written, meticulously researched” (Jillian Cantor, bestselling author of Half Life) novel about Surrealist artist Leonora Carrington and the art, drama, and romance that defined her coming-of-age during World War II. 1940. A train carrying exiled German prisoners from a labor camp arrives in southern France. Within moments, word spreads that Nazi capture is imminent, and the men flee for the woods, desperate to disappear across the Spanish border. One stays behind, determined to ride the train until he reaches home, to find a woman he refers to simply as “her.” 1937. Leonora Carrington is a twenty-year-old British socialite and painter when she meets Max Ernst, an older, married artist whose work has captivated Europe. She follows him to Paris, into the vibrant world of studios and cafes where rising visionaries of the Surrealist movement like Andre Breton, Pablo Picasso, Lee Miller, Man Ray, and Salvador Dali are challenging conventional approaches to art and life. Inspired by their freedom, Leonora begins to experiment with her own work, translating vivid stories of her youth onto canvas and gaining recognition under her own name. It is a bright and glorious age of enlightenment—until war looms over Europe and headlines emerge denouncing Max and his circle as “degenerates,” leading to his arrest and imprisonment. Left along as occupation spreads throughout the countryside, Leonora battles terrifying circumstances to survive, reawakening past demons that threaten to consume her. As Leonora and Max embark on remarkable journeys together and apart, the full story of their tumultuous and passionate love affair unfolds, spanning time and borders as they seek to reunite and reclaim their creative power in a world shattered by war. When their paths cross with Peggy Guggenheim, an art collector and socialite working to help artists escape to America, nothing will be the same. Based on true events and historical figures, Leonora in the Morning Light is “a deeply involving historical tale of tragic lost love, determined survival, the sanctuary of art, and the evolution of a muse into an artist of powerfully provocative feminist expression” (Booklist, starred review).

Contested Tastes

release date: Dec 04, 2018
Contested Tastes
An inside look at the complex and controversial debates surrounding foie gras In the past decade, the French delicacy foie gras—the fattened liver of ducks or geese that have been force-fed through a tube—has been at the center of contentious battles. In Contested Tastes, Michaela DeSoucey takes us to farms, restaurants, protests, and political hearings in both the United States and France to reveal why people care so passionately about foie gras—and why we should care, too. Bringing together fieldwork, interviews, and materials from archives and the media on both sides of the Atlantic, DeSoucey offers a compelling look at the moral arguments and provocative actions of pro- and anti-foie gras forces. She combines personal stories with fair-minded analysis and draws our attention to the cultural dynamics of markets, the multivocal nature of “gastropolitics,” and the complexities of what it means to identify as a “moral” eater in today’s food world. Investigating the causes and consequences of the foie gras wars, Contested Tastes illuminates the social significance of food and taste in the twenty-first century.

Exploring the similarities and differences between the ''language'' of dreams and the language of literature, it analyses the strategies employed by writers to create a sense of dream in literary fiction as well as the genres most conducive to this endeavour. The book closes with three case studies focusing on texts by Kazuo Ishiguro, Clare Boylan and John Banville to illustrate the diverse ways in which writers achieve to ''translate'' the experience and ''language'' of the dream.
