The Revelation of Louisa May (Sneak Preview)

release date: Mar 10, 2015
The Revelation of Louisa May (Sneak Preview)
Want a sneak peek? Download this free sample of The Revelation of Louisa May by Michaela MacColl. Louisa May Alcott can hardly believe her ears—her mother is leaving for the summer to earn money for the family and her father won''t do anything to stop her. How is Louisa to find the time to write her stories if she has to add taking care of her father and sister to her list of chores? And why can''t she escape the boredom of her small town to have an adventure of her own? Little does Louisa know just how interesting her small world is about to become. Before long she is juggling her stubborn father, a fugitive slave who is seeking safety along the Underground Railroad, and possibly even love where she least expects it. Add the mysterious murder of a slave catcher to the mix, and Louisa has her hands full. Michaela MacColl has once again intertwined the facts of a beloved author''s real life with a suspenseful fictional tale that will not only have readers on the edges of their seats but also, like Louisa, debating right versus wrong, family versus independence, and duty versus love. A Junior Library Guild selection

Contemporary Funeral Rituals of Sa'dan Toraja

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Contemporary Funeral Rituals of Sa'dan Toraja
Kniha s názvem Contemporary Funeral Rituals of Sa''dan Toraja; From Aluk Todolo to "New" Religions pojednává o etniku Toradžů, jež obývá provincie Tana Toraja a Toraja Utara v jižní části indonéského ostrova Sulawesi.

Founding a Movement

release date: Jan 01, 2012
Founding a Movement
"The power of women teaching one another is profound. Women''s World Banking was one of the first movements to realize and trust this truth at a global scale. This is what made it a transforming movement." -The Honorable Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, president of Liberia and Nobel Laureate Founding a Movement captures the impossible dream realized by a visionary group of women who met in Mexico City at the first United Nations World Conference on Women in 1975, and then, together, created the first global women''s microfinance network. Drawing on more than 80 interviews, Michaela Walsh recounts her extraordinary path as the founding president of Women''s World Banking and brings alive the perseverance, confidence, and shared risk-taking that propelled the movement forward. This book illuminates the birth of a culture of trust-from Kenya to Colombia to the Philippines-where women entrepreneurs could learn from and teach each other to gain control over their economic destinies. In Walsh''s words, Founding a Movement "shines a light on the value that women contribute through work, and when they support one another, to become full participants in the economy through access to financial institutions and services, and everything that goes with that access." "At last, the full inside story of the founding mothers of microfinance... by one of its key leaders! Indispensable reading!" -Hazel Henderson, president of Ethical Markets Media and creator of the Green Transition Scoreboard "Women''s access to finance, including microcredit, is crucial. Michaela Walsh and Women''s World Banking have broken new ground. Those who wish to follow in their footsteps should read this story." -Jan Pronk, former Minister for International Development Cooperation of the Netherlands MICHAELA WALSH is an activist, scholar, mentor, educator, and author. She has been a pioneer female manager for Merrill Lynch, the first female partner at Boettcher, and the founding president of Women''s World Banking. She has taught at Manhattanville College, served on the Boards of several institutions, and was chairperson of the 59th United Nations DPI/NGO Conference in 2006. She has received numerous awards, including an honor in 2012 from Women''s Funding Network for changing the face of philanthropy.

Release a Man for Combat

release date: Jan 01, 2010
Release a Man for Combat

Yoni Massage

release date: Mar 02, 2009
Yoni Massage
A tantric massage practice for awakening and enhancing women’s innate sensual, emotional, and spiritual energies • Provides emotional healing by releasing traumatic memories stored in the yoni • Includes exercises that use sexual energy to cleanse and stimulate the chakras • Empowers women to draw strength and radiant vitality from the restored connection to their innermost core “Yoni” is the Sanskrit word for the female genitalia, describing not only the anatomy but also encompassing the energetic and spiritual dimensions. While a yoni massage offers women the opportunity to enhance their sexuality, Michaela Riedl shows that the effects of this practice are much more profound and have ramifications affecting every area of life. Long held inhibitions in the West about sexuality and the shame and guilt associated with the sexual zones of the body have created deep-seated barriers that prevent individuals from fully expressing themselves. The practices provided in Yoni Massage are designed to allow women to overcome these barriers and reconnect to their innermost core and deepest feminine nature. Yoni massage is not simply a hands-on technique but involves the conscious direction of energy throughout the body through deep breathing and visualization. It provides women the ability to cleanse and energetically stimulate the chakras as well as achieve emotional healing by releasing the traumatic pain that often becomes seated in the yoni. The author explains that the relegation of this important spiritual and energetic center to a “private part” hinders the process of enlightenment. Once women are able to be in touch with their yoni energy, their connection to the entire web of life is restored to its rightful place.

Enacting Past and Present

Enacting Past and Present
Through a discussion of Walter Benjamin, Sigmund Freud, Mieke Bal and others, author Michaela Grobbel focuses on the work three women authors as types of performance which lead to re-presentations of memory. These women writers foreground the present but also critically demonstrate the complex relationship of the present to the past. Grobbel''s work is a critical addition to any discussion of feminism, memory and literary modernism.

The Most Beautiful Woman on the Screen

release date: Jan 01, 1992
The Most Beautiful Woman on the Screen
Having just arrived at the train station in his hometown, Lieutenant Leo von Sellinthin (John Gilbert) is greeted by his family. A close-up shows his eyes suddenly widen. He seems captivated by a sight which is revealed only within the following point-of-view-shot. The lieutenant''s mesmerized facial expression materializes: a woman of exquisite beauty is entering the field of vision. Within the norms of a certain system, beyond all subjective criteria of taste, beauty has been personified by film actress Greta Garbo. In Hollywood of the twenties, she was cast as «The Most Beautiful Woman on the Screen». The object of consideration here is how Garbo''s beauty was produced and standardized within the film industry. An analysis of a star requires an investigation of the qualities ascribed to him or her. Beauty is only one of numerous possible characteristics of a star; statements about «The Most Beautiful Woman on the Screen» grant insights into a star''s overall function during a certain period in film history. Therefore, Greta Garbo is interesting not as a person, but rather as a case in point for a specific form of presenting beauty.
