This dissertation expands upon the traditional environmentalist usage of the term ecological crisis. Environmentalists use the term to denote the scope and scale of human destruction to both the natural and built environment. I expand on that definition by showing how ecological crisis is simultaneously a crisis of capitalism, and specifically as I show in more detail in chapter two, a crisis in capital accumulation. I therefore centrally ask: What can we learn about contemporary environmental degradation, and how to solve it, by studying the way capitalism functions as a mode of production and not just as a mode of consumption or distribution? In order to answer this question, I examine a range of political economic, Marxian, and environmentalist theory in conjunction with cultural texts and environmentalist media. The dissertation is divided into three chapters. The first chapter examines what fundamentally constitutes the essence of capitalism, and how this essence generates an abstract form of alienation that accords labor a central social significance, even over nature as the natural conditions of production. The second chapter shows how this form of human alienation from nature results in environmental degradation and a crisis in capitalism, both revealed by the concept of waste. The final chapter applies the Marxian critical theory developed in the first two chapters toward an understanding and critique of the way human alienation from nature and waste are constituted culturally in a particular critically acclaimed film, WALL-E (2008). Taken together, these three chapters demonstrate how the ecological is intimately linked to the political and economic aspects of American social life.

Slow group velocities at the photonic band edge give rise to large changes in time delay for small changes in refractive index, shrinking device size. Figures of merit are defined for tuning sensitivity and signal dispersion. Exact calculations for a realistic, three-dimensional grating structure are shown to be well predicted by a simple quadratic-band model, simplifying device design. Chapter 6 derives a general, coupled-mode theory for disorder-induced scattering in strongly periodic systems. The analytical results allow the comparison of photonic- crystal waveguides to similar index-guided waveguides. In the realistic limit of weak disorder, reflections are identical while transmission is higher for the photonic-crystal waveguide. The general results, verified by direct numerical simulations in an example system, suggest a new mechanism for the design of low-loss waveguides.

Alzheimer''s Disease is a chronic neurodegenerative disease which leads to progressive mental deterioration that can occur in middle or old age. During the disease''s progression, various biochemical functions of the brain cells go astray and eventually lead to memory loss. What a lot of people do not realize is the fact this disease goes beyond just losing memory. From my own observation as well as research studies, it has been noticed that Alzheimer''s patients can experience sleep disruption, sundowning, speech decline, apraxia, agnosia, and behavioral changes such as depression and combativeness. As more of these signs and symptoms become evident to me, I conducted a plan as to how people who have loved ones with Alzheimer''s Disease can cope with them and those who experience the disease themselves can learn to improve everyday functions as the disease progresses. This thesis constitutes an awareness of all aspects of Alzheimer''s and a compilation of the best method for treatment and prevention.
