"Prince William Sound is an important spawning ground for the Pacific herring in Alaska. Herring eggs are deposited on marine vegetation in the shallow sublittoral zone. The eggs and edible seaweed are harvested each spring by commercial divers... Underwater surveys were conducted in this region from 1975-1979 to determine the effects of this activity on the kelp resource... Experiments tested the effects of hand-cutting kelps vs. removing them from the substratum"--Abstract.
