Depuis 2006, Nicolas Dickner signe dans les pages de l'hebdomadaire Voir la chronique "Hors champ". Il y traite avec humour et (im)pertinence de l'univers sauvage du livre et disserte sur les moeurs des lecteurs et des auteurs. En tout, un peu plus de 200 chroniques ont été publiées. 52 chroniques "à emporter" ont été sélectionnées pour ce recueil dont les bénéfices sont remis à la Fondation pour l'alphabétisation. Le romancier portatif est le cinquantième titre à paraître aux Éditions Alto qui, rappelons-le, ont vu le jour avec la parution de Nikolski ... de Nicolas Dickner. Cette initiative a vu le jour grâce à la généreuse contribution des imprimeries Transcontinental, du journal Voir et des collaborateurs d'Alto. Pour chaque livre vendu, 7$ sont remis à la Fondation pour l'alphabétisation.
