The Adaptive Roles of Positive and Negative Emotions in Organizational Insiders' Engagement in Security-Based Precaution Taking

The Adaptive Roles of Positive and Negative Emotions in Organizational Insiders' Engagement in Security-Based Precaution Taking
Protecting organizational information is a top priority for most firms. This reality, coupled with the fact that organizational insiders control much of their organizations' valuable information, has led both researchers and practitioners to acknowledge the importance of insiders' behavior for information security (InfoSec). Until recently, researchers have employed only a few theories to understand these influences, and this has generated calls for a broadened theoretical repertoire. Given this opportunity, we incorporate the framework of emotions developed in the information systems (IS) discipline by Beaudry and Pinsonneault (2010) and add the broaden-and-build theory (BBT) to understand the influence of discrete positive and negative emotions on insiders' precaution-taking activities. Our findings demonstrate that the relationship between both positive and negative emotions and precaution taking is mediated by insiders' (1) psychological capital (PsyCap), a higher-order, work-related construct of positive psychological resource capabilities, and (2) psychological distancing, a coping mechanism characterized by insiders' attempts to detach themselves psychologically from a situation. By considering these factors, our model explains 32 percent of the variance in insiders' precaution taking in organizations. Researchers and practitioners can use these findings to develop effective insider InfoSec training, including emotional appeals that increase insiders' precaution taking.

Investigation of Radio-Frequency Identification Assimilation Process in China

Investigation of Radio-Frequency Identification Assimilation Process in China
RFID (Radio frequency identification) is an emerging technology that attracts much attention of supply chain participants recently. However, most Chinese supply chain participants just adopt this innovation without making further steps to fully utilize its benefits. Extant IS research on this technology only focuses on factors that impact its organizational adoption. According to assimilation theory, most information technologies exhibit an “assimilation gap” which means widespread usage tends to lag behind their adoption. However, a technology can only achieve its greatest benefits through full-scale deeper diffusion into the organization's daily operations besides physical adoption. Drawing upon TOE framework, we propose a stage-based model to investigate factors that influence the assimilation of RFID into an organization in China. Moreover, we investigate these factors' changing effect across different assimilation stages in the Chinese context that is addressed little in the existing literature.

When Computer Monitoring Backfires

When Computer Monitoring Backfires
This manuscript examines the unintended consequences that organizational computer monitoring can foster within the firm. We apply justice and reactance theories to explain why monitoring can actually increase the occurrence of detrimental organizational behaviors. Our model suggests monitoring activities that invade employees' privacy lead to perceived injustices, which provoke destructive behavior by employees. Empirical results obtained from 439 survey respondents employed in the banking, finance, and insurance industries provide support for most of our hypotheses. Computer monitoring was found to increase internal computer abuse but not antisocial behaviors. Privacy invasions resulting from the monitoring activities were related to perceptions of procedural injustice, which in turn influenced distributive injustice perceptions. Both injustices acted as direct precursors to internal computer abuse, but only distributive injustice was a significant antecedent to antisocial behavior. We discuss these findings and their limitations in the context of modern organizations that are inundated with information-security responsibilities.

Dimensions of Business-to-Consumer (B2C) Systems Success in Kuwait

Dimensions of Business-to-Consumer (B2C) Systems Success in Kuwait
An extensive body of research has tested the DeLone and McLean (2003) information systems success model in many contexts. Surprisingly, few of these studies have applied it to e-commerce. A study by Wang (2008) represents one such initiative, but it is crucial to address several remaining gaps associated with that study. Moreover, no e-commerce success model has considered the Arab world, which exhibits unique cultural factors influencing e-commerce. Our study considers an improved IS success model for e-commerce in the Arab world. We based our model on that of Wang (2008) and added several enhancements to the validity and generalisability of his efforts, used the latest SEM techniques, including both monetary and nonmonetary value conceptualisations, used a multidimensional conceptualisation of system quality, and proposed specific factors of e-commerce service quality. We tested the proposed research model with a truly randomised sampling approach using 288 experienced business-to-consumer (B2C) consumers in the Arab world. The results largely support our hypothesised model. The most important difference between our results and those of previous studies is our finding that although service quality influences value, it has no bearing on user satisfaction in an Arab context. This study will be useful for practitioners and researchers seeking to improve understanding of B2C e-commerce success in the Arab world.

Understanding Patients' Compliance Behavior in a Mobile Healthcare System

Understanding Patients' Compliance Behavior in a Mobile Healthcare System
The ultimate goal of any prescribed medical therapy is to achieve desired outcomes for patients. However, patient non-compliance has long been a major problem detrimental to patients' health and thus is a concern of all healthcare providers. Patient trust in doctors and patient-doctor communication have been identified as critical factors influencing patient compliance. Nevertheless, little is known about the role of mobile technologies in patient compliance. The purpose of this paper is to predict and empirically demonstrate how mobile healthcare applications juxtaposed to patient trust can increase patients' compliance. We conducted a field survey with 125 patients in the United States. PLS techniques were employed to analyze our dataset. The results reveal that patient-doctor communication and the use of mobile system significantly impact patients' trust, which has a prominent effect on patient compliance attitude. We also find that behavioral intention, response efficacy, and self-efficacy positively influence patients' actual compliance behavior.

Cross-Country Determinants of Citizens' E-Government Reuse Intention

release date: Jan 01, 2023
Cross-Country Determinants of Citizens' E-Government Reuse Intention
Purpose: Despite the major IT investments made by public institutions, the reuse of e-government services remains an issue as citizens hesitate to use e-government websites regularly. In this study, we investigate the cross-country determinants of e-government reuse intention by proposing a theoretical model that integrates constructs from (1) the Delone and McLean IS success model (i.e., system quality, service quality, information quality, perceived value, and user satisfaction); (2) the trust and risk models (i.e., citizen trust, overall risk, time risk, privacy risk, and psychological risks); and (3) Hofstede's cultural model (i.e., uncertainty avoidance, masculinity, individualism, and cross-cultural trust and risk). Design/methodology/approach: Based on data from interviews with 81 Kuwaiti citizens and surveys of 1,829 Kuwaiti and Polish citizens, we conducted comprehensive, cross-cultural, and comparative analyses of e-government reuse intention in a cross-country setting. Findings: The results show that trust is positively associated with citizens' intention to reuse e-government services, whereas risk is negatively associated with citizens' perceived value. We also found that masculinity-femininity and uncertainty avoidance are positively associated with the intention to reuse e-government services and that individualism-collectivism has no significant relationship with reuse intention. This study's findings have important implications for researchers and practitioners seeking to understand and improve e-government success in cross-country settings. Originality/value: We developed a parsimonious model of quality, trust, risk, culture, and technology reuse that captures country-specific cultural contexts and enables us to conduct a comprehensive, cross-cultural, and comparative analysis of e-government reuse intention in the cross-country setting of Kuwait and Poland.
