Three Times a Killer
A virus is in circulation in sub-Saharan Africa that has the potential to become a pandemic wreaking havoc on healthcare systems and economies worldwide. Millions will die. The scientific community and governments work at speed to find a vaccine, but progress is slow. Research labs around the world turn their attention to this latest viral strain in an attempt to find a formula that can be manufactured in volume for global distribution. It’s a race against time. Dr Dan Thomas was a research scientist working in such a lab to find such a vaccine, but unlike his peers, he was not content to use his talent and intellect to better the world. He had witnessed friends fast-track their careers and accumulate wealth, and he was envious. He was highly intelligent, but a flawed individual addicted to hard drugs and alcohol which affected his judgement. Dan’s role in the lab was pivotal. He had responsibility for workflow, monitoring and managing the progress of the lab’s research. A chance encounter with a venture capitalist at a party gave him the idea that he could prosper from stealing the intellectual rights of his employer’s vaccine research, making him a wealthy man, only to encounter challenges he hadn’t anticipated. This tense and exciting story of one man’s quest for wealth and power reveals the lengths some are prepared to go to in an attempt to achieve their misguided ambitions. Lives are destroyed and people die.

Pope Pius XI and World Peace

Pope Pius XI and World Peace
"This lucid biography is a book that has been long awaited, not only by Catholics, but by all who follow the trend of world forces to-day. In it we are given a full picture of the pontificate of a great Pope, who, at the head of his vast Church, has been contending with some of the most difficult times that the Vatican, and the world, have ever had to face. H.H. Pope Pius XI, after studying at the Ambrosian Library in Milan and becoming Prefect there, was called in 1912 to Rome to the Prefectship of theVatican Library. From that time on, Monsignor Ratti, as he was then known, was drawn increasingly into the world of action, especially under Pope Benedict XV, who was a shrewd judge of men and saw in Monsignor Ratti a man of no ordinary quality. In 1918 the future Pope Pius XI was sent to Poland, where he had difficult and hazardous task in reorganizing the Church there. Subsequent to that, he was appointed Cardinal Archbishop of Milan, but held that office for a short time only, for, on Pope Benedict''s death, he succeeded him as Pope Pius XI. The author here shows us Pope Pius''s interpretation of the many and complex problems of to-day, social, economic and political. And besides dealing with these most important questions, he gives us an excellent and vivid description of the workings of the Catholic Church itself, whose supreme unity makes it one of the most powerful forces in the world, a power which no intelligent observer of modern conditions can possibly ignore."--
