The Comprehensive Legacy of Michael Polanyi

release date: Dec 11, 2025
The Comprehensive Legacy of Michael Polanyi
Michael Polanyi (1891-1976) was a curious man driven to understand most everything that came to his attention. His work experience and exemplary insights took him from medicine to physical chemistry and ultimately to the social sciences and philosophy. His latter move was made in response to such disasters as the world wars, the depression, and the rise of totalitarian regimes. The creative approach he employed for scientific discovery greatly influenced his subsequent work. Because the social and cultural context has changed in the 75 years since his death, the articles in this book seek to identify and build upon his broad-based insights in ways that are fitting today. Thus, the book is divided into a section that, in Polanyian terms, dwells in and interprets his thought and a section that, while rooted in his thought, breaks out of it to reflect on its rich possibilities for further development.

Undercover

release date: Jun 25, 2013
Undercover
'' Undercover lays bare the deceit, betrayal and cold-blooded violation practised again and again by undercover police officers - troubling, timely and brilliantly executed.'' Henry Porter The gripping stories of a group of police spies - written by the award-winning investigative journalists who exposed the Mark Kennedy scandal - and the uncovering of forty years of state espionage. This was an undercover operation so secret that some of our most senior police officers had no idea it existed. The job of the clandestine unit was to monitor British ''subversives'' - environmental activists, anti-racist groups, animal rights campaigners. Police stole the identities of dead people to create fake passports, driving licences and bank accounts. They then went deep undercover for years, inventing whole new lives so that they could live incognito among the people they were spying on. They used sex, intimate relationships and drugs to build their credibility. They betrayed friends, deceived lovers, even fathered children. And their operations continue today. Undercover reveals the truth about secret police operations - the emotional turmoil, the psychological challenges and the human cost of a lifetime of deception - and asks whether such tactics can ever be justified.

Pamphlet Architecture 21: Situation Normal

release date: Dec 01, 1998
Pamphlet Architecture 21: Situation Normal
In this volume, the latest addition to the award-winning Pamphlet Architecture series, the authors examine common architectural forms (chairs, doors, and walls) and programs (a cinema, a health club, a skyscraper) in order to dissect and reconfigure them. In the process they create ten new projects that draw their power from an oscillation between the recognizable and the surreal. Cleverly undermining the conventions and norms of contemporary architectural design, the authors pose a direct challenge to the seemingly endless search for new styles, arguing instead that the greatest potential for architecture in the twenty-first century rests on an imaginative examination of what we take for granted. Designed by authors, Situation Normal... weaves together text, photographs, and drawings. An introductory essay establishes the theoretical and historical position of the book.

Global Politics

release date: Jul 27, 1992
Global Politics
This innovative new text is derived from a highly successful Open University course of the same title. It takes as a dominant theme the contested issue of ''globalization'' (the apparent intensification of global patterns of inter-dependence) and its implications for the autonomy of the modern nation-state. Following a conceptual introduction, which critically examines the theoretical debates framing the study of world politics, the work is structured around four key processes of globalization which the authors identify as being the central determinants of contemporary global politics. These key processes are: the global impact of great power relations; the globalizing tendencies of technological innovation; the existence of a global economy; and the globalizing force of modernity. Reflecting this structure the text is organized into four discrete sections. Each section explores, both theoretically and empirically, one of the four processes of globalization. Throughout, particular attention is paid both to a critical evaluation of these globalizing processes as well as to their consequences for the sovereignty and autonomy of the modern nation-state. Moreover, the authors combine a lucid treatment of theoretical debates with topical case-study material to produce a text which is extremely accessible to undergraduate students studying international relations and politics and to those readers with little prior knowledge of world affairs.
