Iraq and the War on Terror

release date: Oct 28, 2005
Iraq and the War on Terror
Since the start of the Iraq conflict, world-renowned security expert Paul Rogers has produced a series of monthly reports scrutinising developments in the occupation and the Iraqi response to it, drawing on the unique range of contacts and material available to the prestigious Oxford Research Group. They have become the standard source material for journalists, policymakers and campaigners writing about Iraq. Now, for the first time, Paul Rogers has brought these reports together to provide a detailed and authoritative analysis of the last year in Iraq. A disturbing picture emerges, in which coalition forces repeatedly misread the direction of the insurgency, in which radical groups gain strength through the ongoing (and underreported) loss of civilian lives at the hands of the occupying forces, and in which the US''s determination to secure the Persian Gulf''s oil and gas resources lock it further and further into a destructive, intractable, and ultimately counter-productive war in the Middle East. Concisely-written and highly accessible, ''Iraq and the War on Terror'' is an indispensable book for anyone interested the Middle East, US foreign policy and international security. Its conclusions about the extent of the damage caused by the war, and how long the occupation looks set to last, will send shockwaves through policymakers in the US and the UK alike.

ABCs of z/OS System Programming: Volume 4

release date: Feb 10, 2011
ABCs of z/OS System Programming: Volume 4
This IBM® Redbooks® publication describes the functions of z/OS® Communications Server. z/OS Communications Server provides a set of communications protocols that support peer-to-peer connectivity functions for both local and wide-area networks, including the most popular wide-area network, the Internet. z/OS Communications Server also provides performance enhancements that can benefit a variety of TCP/IP applications. z/OS Communications Server provides both SNA and TCP/IP networking protocols for z/OS. The SNA protocols are provided by VTAM® and include Subarea, Advanced Peer-to-Peer Networking, and High Performance Routing protocols. z/OS Communications Server exploits z/OS UNIX® services even for traditional MVSTM environments and applications. Prior to utilizing TCP/IP services, therefore, a full-function mode z/OS UNIX environment including a Data Facility Storage Management Subsystem (DFSMSdfp), a z/OS UNIX file system, and a security product (such as Resource Access Control Facility, or RACF®) must be defined and active before z/OS Communications Server can be started successfully. The ABCs of z/OS System Programming is a 13-volume collection that provides an introduction to the z/OS operating system and the hardware architecture. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced system programmer, the ABCs collection provides the information that you need to start your research into z/OS and related subjects. If you want to become more familiar with z/OS in your current environment, or if you are evaluating platforms to consolidate your e-business applications, the ABCs collection will serve as a powerful technical tool. The contents of the volumes are as follows: Volume 1: Introduction to z/OS and storage concepts, TSO/E, ISPF, JCL, SDSF, and z/OS delivery and installation Volume 2: z/OS implementation and daily maintenance, defining subsystems, JES2 and JES3, LPA, LNKLST, authorized libraries, SMP/E, Language Environment® Volume 3: Introduction to DFSMS, data set basics storage management hardware and software, catalogs, and DFSMStvs Volume 4: Communication Server, TCP/IP, and VTAM Volume 5: Base and Parallel Sysplex®, System Logger, Resource Recovery Services (RRS), global resource serialization (GRS), z/OS system operations, automatic restart management (ARM), Geographically Dispersed Parallel SysplexTM (GDPS®) Volume 6: Introduction to security, RACF, Digital certificates and PKI, Kerberos, cryptography and z990 integrated cryptography, zSeries® firewall technologies, LDAP, and Enterprise identity mapping (EIM) Volume 7: Printing in a z/OS environment, Infoprint Server and Infoprint Central Volume 8: An introduction to z/OS problem diagnosis Volume 9: z/OS UNIX System Services Volume 10: Introduction to z/Architecture®, zSeries processor design, zSeries connectivity, LPAR concepts, HCD, and HMC Volume 11: Capacity planning, performance management, RMFTM, and SMF Volume 12: WLM Volume 13: JES3

z/OS Distributed File Service zSeries File System Implementation z/OS V1R13

release date: Oct 18, 2012
z/OS Distributed File Service zSeries File System Implementation z/OS V1R13
The z/OS® Distributed File Service zSeries® File System (zFS) is a z/OS UNIX® file system that can be used like the Hierarchical File System (HFS). zFS file systems contain files and directories, including Access Control Lists (ACLs), that can be accessed with the z/OS HFS application programming interfaces (APIs). zFS file systems can be mounted into the z/OS UNIX hierarchy along with other local or remote file system types (for example, HFS, TFS, AUTOMNT, NFS, and so on). zFS does not replace HFS, but it is the z/OS UNIX strategic file system and IBM® recommends migrating HFS file systems to zFS. Beginning with z/OS V1R7, there are no restrictions for file system structures that should be kept as HFS instead of zFS. This IBM Redbooks® publication helps you to install, tailor, and configure new zFS file systems. This information can be used by system administrators who work with the zFS component of the IBM z/OS Distributed File Service base element. The book provides a broad description of the new architecture of the zFS file system for all releases up to zFS V1R13. You can use it as a reference when converting HFS file systems to zFS file systems. It will help you to create a solution for migrating to zFS file systems, and to understand the performance differences between HFS file systems and zFS file systems.

Beyond Terror

release date: Nov 30, 2011
Beyond Terror
Is international terrorism really the single greatest threat to world security? Since the 9/11 attacks, many Western governments assume terrorism to be the greatest threat we face. In response, their dangerous policies attempt to maintain control and keep the status quo by using overwhelming military force. This important book shows why this approach has been such a failure, and how it distracts us from other, much greater, threats of climate change, competition over resources, marginalisation of the majority of the world and global militarisation. Unless urgent, coordinated action is taken in the next 5-10 years on all these issues it will be almost imossible to avoid the earth becoming a highly unstable place by the middle years of this century. Beyond Terror offers an alternative path for politicians, journalists and concerned citizens alike.

ABCs of z/OS System Programming Volume 12

release date: Jan 28, 2010
ABCs of z/OS System Programming Volume 12
Installations today process different types of work with different response times. Every installation wants to make the best use of its resources, maintain the highest possible throughput, and achieve the best possible system responsiveness. You can realize such results by using workload management. This IBM® Redbooks® publication introduces you to the concepts of workload management utilizing Workload Manager (WLM). Workload Manager allows you to define performance goals and assign a business importance to each goal. You define the goals for work in business terms, and the system decides how much resource, such as CPU and storage, should be given to the work. The system matches resources to the work to meet those goals, and constantly monitors and adapts processing to meet the goals. This reporting reflects how well the system is doing compared to its goals, because installations need to know whether performance goals are being achieved as well as what they are accomplishing in the form of performance goals. The ABCs of z/OS® System Programming is a thirteen-volume collection that provides an introduction to the z/OS operating system and the hardware architecture. Whether you are a beginner or an experienced system programmer, the ABCs collection provides the information that you need to start your research into z/OS and related subjects. If you would like to become more familiar with z/OS in your current environment, or if you are evaluating platforms to consolidate your e-business applications, the ABCs collection will serve as a powerful technical tool.
