The New Interpreter's Handbook of Preaching

release date: Nov 01, 2010
The New Interpreter's Handbook of Preaching
The New Interpreter’s Handbook of Preaching is a major reference tool for preaching, with articles on every facet of Christian sermon preparation and delivery. This resource is both scholarly and practical. It focuses on the most distinctive feature and greatest strength of homiletics as a discipline: It is rooted in interdisciplinary scholarship and it develops theory geared to practice. Its theory arises out of the study of both excellent preaching past and present and actual sermon preparation and composition. When theory and practice critique each other, it is possible to produce guidelines that assist greater excellence and economy in preaching the gospel. Excellence in standards is an area in which homiletics needs to grow, and this project will be both a means to encourage and develop it. A guiding question throughout will be, Will it preach? The answers will be offered in the sense that “here is something that works well,” rather than “here is something to try.” Preachers will turn to this resource with the expectation that they will find scholarly treatment of topics, brief bibliographies of relevant key books and articles, along with practical methodological suggestions for preachers to employ. The contributors are homileticians, preachers, and writers in various disciplines who are committed to the pulpit through practice.

The Four Pages of the Sermon, Revised and Updated

release date: Sep 18, 2018
The Four Pages of the Sermon, Revised and Updated
Doing justice to the complexity of the preaching task and the questions that underlie it, author Paul Scott Wilson organizes both the preparation and the content of the sermon around its "four pages." Each "page" addresses a different theological and creative component of what happens in any sermon. Page One presents the trouble or conflict that takes place in or that underscores the biblical text itself. Page Two looks at similar conflict--sin or brokenness--in our own time. Page Three returns to the Bible to identify where God is at work in or behind the text--in other words, to discover the good news. Page Four points to God at work in our world, particularly in relation to the situations described in Page Two. This approach is about preaching the gospel in nearly any sermonic form. Wilson teaches the ‘what’, ‘why’, and ‘how’ of sermon construction, all rooted in a theology of the Word. This completely revised edition guides readers through the sermon process step by step, with the aim of composing sermons that challenge and provide hope, by focusing on God more closely than on humans. It has been largely rewritten to include an assessment of where preaching is today in light of propositional preaching, the New Homiletic, African American preaching, the effect of the internet, and use of technology. A chapter on exegesis has been added, plus new focus on the importance of preaching to a felt need, the need for proclamation in addition to teaching, and developing tools to ensure sermon excellence. New sermon examples have been added along with a section that responds to critics and looks to the future.

Preaching as Poetry

release date: Aug 19, 2014
Preaching as Poetry
It is tempting for preachers in this digital age of plurality and diversity to offer quick sound bites and PowerPoint-style presentations. These tend to invite a yes or no response, as in mathematical equations. But if we are to reach Christians across the theological spectrumandinvite non-Christians to seriously consider our faith, we must take a different approach. What is needed is greater attention to poetry and images meant to communicate the beauty of the faith and the wonder and mystery of God in everyday life. We must communicate the unity of our message of faith, the divine as truth, and justice and healing as expressions of God. Preaching as poetry (theopoetic preaching) allows for the bold imagery of scripture and the gentle invitation of art. Sermons can no longer always be neatly tied up, perfectly linear, with complete answers to every question. In Preaching as Poetry Paul Scott Wilson teaches why this new approach is necessary today, and demonstrates with multiple examples how it works in real sermons. He skillfully guides the reader to incorporate the classical values of beauty, goodness and truth in every sermon, and in ways that connect with congregants and listeners today.

Broken Words

release date: Sep 01, 2010
Broken Words
A look at what both our successes and failures in preaching can tell us about how to craft better sermons. Paul Wilson has long been one of the most important figures among those who seek a richer and more complete understanding of what preaching is, and how it might be made better. In this new book he draws on his broad and deep work in homiletics to show preachers how to craft a variety of types of sermons. How do you preach from the Old Testament? What are the particular needs and challenges of preaching the Good Friday, and then the Easter, sermon? What do you do when you want to address contemporary events? Recognizing that all sermons are in some ways "broken words," he includes in each chapter an illustrative sermon, some of which work well, yet others of which don''t. If you stand in the pulpit long, he reminds us, you''re going to preach your share of both. You would do well to learn, then, how either kind of sermon--the ones you''re proud of and the ones you want to forget--can provide ample opportunities to learn how to be a more effective and faithful preacher of the gospel. Readers will learn how to vary the sources, styles, and substance of their sermons. Key Benefits: Will empower the reader to move outside their comfort zone in preaching, thus engaging the broader possibilities for preaching; Will help the reader to learn how to assess both their strong and weak sermons, and learn from each.

Six Days in Marapore

release date: Dec 08, 2014
Six Days in Marapore
In this swiftly paced and lyrical novel about British expatriates at the time of Indian independence, Paul Scott grapples with the themes of race, possession, and history that dominate all four novels of his masterpiece, The Raj Quartet, especially The Jewel in the Crown. As always, Scott fills his book with vivid characters: the seductive, bigoted war widow; the sophisticated, wily Hindu politician; and the athletic young American who only gradually begins to understand the legacy of pain and hatred veiling the woman he has come to rescue. Set against the backdrop of a nation in violent transition—a climate of exhilaration and shifting loyalties—Six Days in Marapore unfolds amidst the possibility of reconciliation, freedom, and healing. "Scott''s brief characterizations are as important to Six Days in Marapore as the basic plot . . . This is not primarily a novel of India, but rather more of frightened foreigners living there at the end of their era."—New York Times "Intense, abrasive, the many conflicts and telltale stigmata of Hindu and Moslem, white and off white, give this its uncertain temper and certain suspense."—Kirkus Reviews

Managing The Manager

Managing The Manager
Poet Richard Berengarten has published over 25 books including poetry, translations and criticism since his first collection, The Easter Rising, appeared in 1968. His poetry has been translated into more than 90 languages. His book-length poem The Manager was first published in 2001. This original and innovative work received high praise from reviewers at the time and has since then seen two more editions in 2008 and 2011 with various revisions by the author. His complex, entertaining book engages with issues such as the Modernist heritage, Postmodernist experimentation, gender relations and the problem of contemporary spiritual emptiness. Recognized as a seminal work of the late 20th century, this book-length poem employs a little-used poetic form the verset or verse paragraph. This volume brings together original essays on The Manager by nine internationally-known poets, critics and academics. It is aimed primarily at a scholarly audience—teachers, researchers and students of contemporary poetry written in English. While the essays are specialized, they are at the same time clearly-written and avoid academic jargon. Their argumentative transparence will therefore also make them available to a more general readership interested in contemporary poetry and the broader cultural issues that it entails. This book will serve for many as an introduction to a figure who is arguably one of the most significant poets writing in English today.

Painted Clay

release date: Jan 01, 2001
Painted Clay
"In Painted Clay, Paul Scott proposes an alternative version of ceramic history ... one where form and function are not dominant, but where painting and the graphic development of ceramic surface are the prime concerns. Covering a range from pre-Dynastic Egyptian painting on pots, through Chinese porcelain, Persian Minai ware and Maiolica to the blue and white of the industrialized West, he charts the development of increasingly sophisticated painted and graphic works." "The book takes an extensive overview of today''s contemporary (graphic) ceramic scene, and the figures and movements that have influenced it. In exploring the use "painters" such as Picasso, Miro, the CoBrA Group, Conrad Atkinson, and others have made of ceramics, it also examines the relationships artists have had with the pottery industry, from Soviet Revolutionary Propaganda ware to collaborations at the Wedgwood Pottery company. It highlights a wide range of work by contemporary ceramic artists, painters, and printmakers from around the world: Ann Kraus, Cindy Kolodziejski, Eric Mellon, Grayson Perry, and many others." "This book should appeal to anyone interested in ceramics, as well as to painters, printmakers, graphic artists, and all those generally interested in the visual arts."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. The Raj Quartet (1)

release date: Jul 03, 2007
The Raj Quartet (1)
The Raj Quartet, Paul Scott''s epic study of British India in its final years, has no equal. Tolstoyan in scope and Proustian in detail but completely individual in effect, it records the encounter between East and West through the experiences of a dozen people caught up in the upheavals of the Second World War and the growing campaign for Indian independence from Britain. The first novel, The Jewel in the Crown, describes the doomed love between an English girl and an Indian boy, Daphne Manners and Hari Kumar. This affair touches the lives of other characters in three subsequent volumes, most of them unknown to Hari and Daphne but involved in the larger social and political conflicts which destroy the lovers. In The Day of the Scorpion, Ronald Merrick, a sadistic policeman who arrested and prosecuted Hari, insinuates himself into an aristocratic British family as World War II escalates. On occasions unsparing in its study of personal dramas and racial differences, the Raj Quartet is at all times profoundly humane, not least in the author’s capacity to identify with a huge range of characters. It is also illuminated by delicate social comedy and wonderful evocations of the Indian scene, all narrated in luminous prose. The other two novels in the Raj Quartet, The Towers of Silence and A Division of the Spoils, are also available from Everyman’s Library. With a new introduction by Hilary Spurling

Motherless Child

Motherless Child
Paul Scott, Motherless Child.

In an Arid Land
"What I''m about to tell took place near the little town of Alpine, Texas, when I was fresh out of the service and had some money in my pockets. . . . The thing that happened shouldn''t have happened and I wish it never did. But there''s no denying it and in a way I''ve been on the lam because of it ever since." So begins the title story of In an Arid Land, a collection that depicts episodes in the lives of ordinary people facing real problems. Testament to the challenges of everyday life, the stories often revolve around tragic turning points--the loss of a loved one, divorce, retirement, or the pains of growing up and old. Malone''s characters are, indeed, often on the lam.

Imagination of the Heart
This guide to contemporary preaching focuses on exciting and innovative ideas that have recently emerged in the work of Fred Craddock and others. Much more than just another "how-to" book, the volume is informed by substantial work in contemporary theology, linguistics, and hermeneutical theory. At the same time, the book is very practical, and addresses basic principles of preaching. Paul Scott Wilson demonstrates with clarity and in detail how Scripture and personal experience can be used to train the imagination, and how this, in turn, can both strengthen and enliven the task of preaching.
