Motherless Child

release date: Mar 12, 2015
Motherless Child
From the Yardbirds to Cream, Blind Faith to Derek and the Dominos, and a hugely-successful solo career, Eric Clapton''s fifty years in the music business can look like an uninterrupted rise to become one of the greatest guitar players who ever lived. But his story is as complicated as it is fascinating. Clapton''s god-like skill with a guitar was matched by an almost equal talent for self-destruction. He has never shied away from telling the truth about his battles with drink and drugs - or the sometimes catastrophic impact they had on the other people in his life, including his first wife Pattie Boyd. And without those deep personal lows we may never have had the musical highs that won him millions of fans. His story is also one of a long but successful road to sobriety, redemption and happiness. Motherless Child chronicles Clapton''s remarkable journey: the music, the women, the drugs, the cars, the guitars, the heartbreak and the triumphs are all here. The book includes interviews with some people close to Clapton who have never spoken on the record before. It explores his musical legacy as one of the most influential musicians of his generation, and as the keeper of the flame for the blues.

The Raj Quartet (2)

release date: Jul 03, 2007
The Raj Quartet (2)
The Raj Quartet, Paul Scott''s epic study of British India in its final years, has no equal. Tolstoyan in scope and Proustian in detail but completely individual in effect, it records the encounter between East and West through the experiences of a dozen people caught up in the upheavals of the Second World War and the growing campaign for Indian independence from Britain. In The Towers of Silence, Barbie Batchelor, a British missionary and schoolteacher, befriends a British family and witnesses the trial of Hari Kumar, an Indian man accused of assaulting his beloved Daphne Manners, while observing the dangerously cruel Captain Ronald Merrick, Hari’s nemesis. In A Division of the Spoils, the chaos of the departure of the British and the fervor of Partition wreaks havoc upon the twilight of the Raj — and the end of a era. On occasions unsparing in its study of personal dramas and racial differences, the Raj Quartet is at all times profoundly humane, not least in the author’s capacity to identify with a huge range of characters. It is also illuminated by delicate social comedy and wonderful evocations of the Indian scene, all narrated in luminous prose. The other two novels in the Raj Quartet, The Jewel in the Crown and The Day of the Scorpion, are also available from Everyman’s Library. With a new introduction by Hilary Spurling

Evolution Of Social System

release date: Feb 02, 2026
Evolution Of Social System
In ''The Evolution of Social Systems'' J.P. Scott for the first time combines genetic theories of evolution, system theory and theories of behavioural evolution to explain the evolution of social behaviour and organisation. He proposes that caregiving has evolved from self care, to care of fertilised eggs, to developing embryos, to hatchlings. Care may then be extended to adult offspring, collateral relatives and to unrelated others. Humans, Scott shows, ae unique in the degree to which caregiving behaviour is extendable to nonrelated humans, other animals as pets, and even to plants. He concludes that social organisation is based on caregiving as well as processes such as unconscious physiological cooperation, site attachment, sexual behaviour, defensive behaviour, competition and conflict. Competition is thus not the sole mode of evolution. This view challenges some of the conventional sociobiological theories of the evolution of altruism. The book''s broad interdisciplinary scope and social relevance has significant import for the general reader as well as for researchers and students in evolution, animal behaviour, ecology, psychobiology, and the human sciences of anthropology, political science and sociology.

Lines of Thought
This book brings together twelve essays published between 1983 and 2015. They reveal the author''s continuing interest in what is argued here to be the central, although subversive and recessive line of thinking in American and western society. This romantic thread is followed mainly from Ralph Waldo Emerson through Emily Dickinson to Martin Heidegger and Stanley Cavell. Este hilo romántico es seguido principalmente desde Ralph Waldo Emerson hasta Martin Heidegger y Stanley Cavell, pasando por Emily Dickinson.

Each entry is co-written by a theologian and homiletician and seeks to answer the questions, ""What does this passage say about the gospel and how does it speak to my e.

Valencian Folktales, Volume 3

Valencian Folktales, Volume 3
Enric Valor (1911–2000) is one of the most important Valencian authors of the 20th century. This third selection of his highly popular rondalles (folktales) will complete the publication of his folktales in English translation. At a time when Catalan was under threat from the cultural bulldozer of the Franco regime, which condemned the use of anything but Castilian Spanish in public communication, Valor went to great lengths to disseminate knowledge of the language, through writing grammar and linguistic studies (as well as teaching it to fellow inmates when he was imprisoned by the regime for his cultural activities). These tales, collected over a number of years in small villages in the province of Alacant, were a significant part of his ongoing efforts to safeguard the Catalan language and the culture and history of the region. The Rondalles Valencianes have been compared to Italo Calvino’s Italian Folk Tales and Henri Pourrat’s Treasury of French Folk Tales. Like them, Valor aimed in rewriting the oral material to establish a common national body of folk narratives and to make the stories more appealing to Valencian readers, young and old alike. The critical introduction provides a classification of the tales in terms of themes and motifs and also explores relevant historical and social aspects that characterize Valor’s folktale corpus.

His poetry has been translated into more than 90 languages. His book-length poem The Manager was first published in 2001. This original and innovative work received high praise from reviewers at the time and has since then seen two more editions in 2008 and 2011 with various revisions by the author. His complex, entertaining book engages with issues such as the Modernist heritage, Postmodernist experimentation, gender relations and the problem of contemporary spiritual emptiness. Recognized as a seminal work of the late 20th century, this book-length poem employs a little-used poetic form the verset or verse paragraph. This volume brings together original essays on The Manager by nine internationally-known poets, critics and academics. It is aimed primarily at a scholarly audience—teachers, researchers and students of contemporary poetry written in English. While the essays are specialized, they are at the same time clearly-written and avoid academic jargon. This book will serve for many as an introduction to a figure who is arguably one of the most significant poets writing in English today.

In an Arid Land

release date: Jan 01, 1995
In an Arid Land
"What I''m about to tell took place near the little town of Alpine, Texas, when I was fresh out of the service and had some money in my pockets. . . . The thing that happened shouldn''t have happened and I wish it never did. But there''s no denying it and in a way I''ve been on the lam because of it ever since." So begins the title story of In an Arid Land, a collection that depicts episodes in the lives of ordinary people facing real problems. Testament to the challenges of everyday life, the stories often revolve around tragic turning points--the loss of a loved one, divorce, retirement, or the pains of growing up and old. Malone''s characters are, indeed, often on the lam.
