The Russia That We Have Lost
In 1917, Bolshevik revolutionaries overthrew the tsar of Russia and established a new, communist government, one that viewed the Imperial Russia of old as a righteously vanquished enemy. And yet, as Pavel Khazanov shows, after the collapse of Stalinism, a reconfiguration of Imperial Russia slowly began to emerge, recalling the culture of tsarist Russia not as a disgrace but as a glory, a past to not only remember but to recover, and to deploy against what to many seemed like a discredited socialist project. Khazanov’s careful untangling of this discourse in the late Soviet period reveals a process that involved figures of all political stripes, from staunch conservatives to avowed intelligentsia liberals. Further, Khazanov shows that this process occurred not outside of or in opposition to Soviet guidance and censorship, but in mainstream Soviet culture that commanded wide audiences, especially among the Soviet middle class. Excavating the cultural logic of this newly foundational, mythic memory of a “lost Russia,” Khazanov reveals why, despite the apparently liberal achievement of the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991, Boris Yeltsin (and later, Vladamir Putin) successfully steered Russia into oligarchy and increasing autocracy. The anti-Soviet memory of the pre-Soviet past, ironically constructed during the late socialist period, became and remains a politically salient narrative, a point of consensus that surprisingly attracts both contemporary regime loyalists and their would-be liberal opposition.

Evaluation of the Cross-lingual Embedding Models from the Lexicographic Perspective
Cross-lingual embedding models (CMs) enable us to transfer lexical knowledge across languages. Therefore, they represent a useful approach for retrieving translation equivalents in lexicography. However, these models have been mainly oriented towards the natural language processing (NLP) field, lacking proper evaluation with error evaluation datasets that were compiled automatically. This causes discrepancies between models hindering the correct interpretation of the results. In this paper, we aim to address these issues and make these models more accessible for lexicography by evaluating them from a lexicographic point of view. We evaluate three benchmark CMs on three diverse language pairs: close, distant, and different script languages. Additionally, we propose key parameters that the evaluation dataset should include to meet lexicographic needs, have reproducible results, accurately reflect the performance, and set appropriate parameters during training. Our code and evaluation datasets are publicly available.

This book investigates two possibilities for describing classical-mechanical physical systems along with their Hamiltonian dynamics in the framework of quantum mechanics.The first possibility consists in exploiting the geometrical properties of the set of quantum pure states of "microsystems" and of the Lie groups characterizing the specific classical system. The second approach is to consider quantal systems of a large number of interacting subsystems – i.e. macrosystems, so as to study the quantum mechanics of an infinite number of degrees of freedom and to look for the behaviour of their collective variables. The final chapter contains some solvable models of “quantum measurement" describing dynamical transitions from "microsystems" to "macrosystems".

Written by a Czech Jewish boy, A Boy in Terezín covers a year of Pavel Weiner''s life in the Theresienstadt transit camp in the Czech town of Terezín from April 1944 until liberation in April 1945. The Germans claimed that Theresienstadt was "the town the Führer gave the Jews," and they temporarily transformed it into a Potemkin village for an International Red Cross visit in June 1944, the only Nazi camp opened to outsiders. But the Germans lied. Theresienstadt was a holding pen for Jews to be shipped east to annihilation camps. While famous and infamous figures and historical events flit across the pages, they form the background for Pavel''s life. Assigned to the now-famous Czech boys'' home, L417, Pavel served as editor of the magazine Ne?ar. Pavel''s father and brother were deported in September 1944; he turned thirteen (the age for his bar mitzvah) in November of that year, and he grew in his ability to express his observations and reflect on them. Both nodal and hierachic concepts of the FEM are examined. A solid introduction to the theory of PDEs and FEM contained in Chapters 1-4 serves as the core and foundation of the publication. Chapter 5 is devoted to modern higher-order methods for the numerical solution of ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that arise in the semidiscretization of time-dependent PDEs by the Method of Lines (MOL). Chapter 6 discusses fourth-order PDEs rooted in the bending of elastic beams and plates and approximates their solution by means of higher-order Hermite and Argyris elements. Finally, Chapter 7 introduces the reader to various PDEs governing computational electromagnetics and describes their finite element approximation, including modern higher-order edge elements for Maxwell''s equations. The understanding of many theoretical and practical aspects of both PDEs and FEM requires a solid knowledge of linear algebra and elementary functional analysis, such as functions and linear operators in the Lebesgue, Hilbert, and Sobolev spaces. These topics are discussed with the help of many illustrative examples in Appendix A, which is provided as a service for those readers who need to gain the necessary background or require a refresher tutorial. Appendix B presents several finite element computations rooted in practical engineering problems and demonstrates the benefits of using higher-order FEM. Numerous finite element algorithms are written out in detail alongside implementation discussions. Exercises, including many that involve programming the FEM, are designed to assist the reader in solving typical problems in engineering and science. The story of Pavel Nazaroff reads more like something out of a spy thriller than one man''s true story. Nazaroff, the ringleader of a plot to overthrow Bolshevik rule in Central Asia in 1918, was betrayed to the dreaded Cheka, or Bolshevik secret police, who quickly condemned him to death as "a known enemy of the proletariat." Just before his execution, however, a White Russian uprising stormed the prison in Tashkent where Nazaroff was held and in the confusion he escaped. And so began what he was later to describe as "a long and distant odyssey which would take me right across Central Asia, to the mysterious land of Tibet, and over the Himalayas to the plains of Hindustan." On his journey we was aided by the Kirghiz and the Sarts, Moslem peoples who also detested the Bolsheviks. At one point, Nazaroff was walled up in a Sart''s dwelling for his own protection, and for many months he lived "the life of a hunted animal." As the months passed, Nazaroff realized that his counter-revolutionary cause was a hopeless one, and that his only recourse was to flee across the world''s tallest mountain range into China. The final stage of his adventure, in which he must evade both the pursuing Cheka and the Chinese border guards, will keep readers on the very edges of their seats. Hunted Through Central Asia also offers a fascinating introduction to the life and times of Nazaroff by Peter Hopkirk, as well as an Epilogue in which Hopkirk includes details of the counter-revolutionary''s life after his dramatic escape from the Cheka.
