Language and Mediated Masculinities

release date: Jan 01, 2023
Language and Mediated Masculinities
From television shows to the manosphere, and from alt-right communities to fatherhood forums, debates about masculinity have come to dominate the media landscape. What does it mean to be a man in contemporary society? How is masculinity constituted in different media spaces? This growing cultural tension around masculinities has been discussed and analyzed both for general audiences and in burgeoning academic scholarship. What has been typically overlooked, however, is the role that language plays in these mediated performances of masculinity. In Language and Mediated Masculinities, Robert Lawson draws on data from newspapers, social media sites, television programs, and online forums to explore language and masculinities across a range of media contexts. The book offers a critical evaluation of the intersection between language, masculinities, and identities in contemporary society and addresses three key questions: How are masculinities constructed, in both public and private spheres, through linguistic and discursive strategies? How does language about masculinity and men affect (and recreate) gender ideologies in different social, political, and historical contexts? What might the language of men tell us about the state of contemporary gender relations in the twenty-first century? Lawson furthers our understanding of how language is implicated in (re)creating gender ideologies and how it shapes contemporary gender relations. Against a cultural backdrop of rising neoliberalism, ethnic nationalism, online radicalization, networked misogyny, and fractious gender relations, this book is an important contribution to charting how language is used to monitor, evaluate, and police masculinities in online and offline spaces.

Oh Yes We Can!

release date: Jul 01, 2020
Oh Yes We Can!
In Oh Yes We Can! We hope to offer America a view many have perhaps never seen, a view of the good things black people have done and are doing for themselves, their families, and their country. Our history, black history, is getting increasing attention in school curricula. We even get some network coverage during "black history month." Every now and then, an article appears in the national print media about "encouraging signs" in the black community. But make no mistake. The overwhelming image of black people-especially young black men-is "Up against the wall!" We hope to do our small part to begin to destroy that image. To the extent that the image accurately reflects the behavior of many young black males, we hope to begin to erode the view among young black children that crime and drugs and lawlessness present their only hope of escape from the bleakness of their lives. We hope to begin to paint an entirely different picture, a bright picture of opportunity that has inspired the many immigrants who have flocked to our shores for liberty, for political freedom, for economic freedom.

Still Competition

release date: Nov 20, 2017
Still Competition
Following the success of his 2016 book Razama-Snaz! The Listener’s Guide to Nazareth, Robert Lawson returns with this meticulous reviewing of every Cheap Trick album, song by song. In his book, Still Competition: The Listener’s Guide to Cheap Trick, Lawson outlines the band’s significant television appearances, live shows, and more with the attention to detail only a super fan could provide. A dedicated follower, Lawson has assembled this reference guide out of a love of music and a dedication to fellow fans, but he is not without criticism (often humourously so) when the rockers fall short of his high expectations. He shines the spotlight indiscriminately, which makes him all the more credible a witness to the band’s lengthy career. Lawson also seeks input from some of the world’s greatest Cheap Trick and classic rock fans, who share stories from epic live shows. Fellow classic rock devotees will love this manual on Cheap Trick’s highs, lows, and everything in between.

No haughtier stepper in the regiment than Scheherazade, no loftier-nosed champion of royalty and privilege. Naturally, the fall of this mare was equally great, even to the glue factory; and still more remarkable was the transformation which took place slowly but surely after Sam Adams talked her out of the glue cart into the home of Paul Revere. Thus Sherry became the horse of a patriot, and soon knew all about the Revere family, the trade of the silversmith, and the doings of the Sons of Liberty. "With many fine drawings that are as vivid and full of fun as the story, this is altogether an original presentation of some great moments in our history."—The Horn Book "Try this for reading aloud, as a first rate family book.—The Kirkus Reviews "The make-up is excellent, illustrations are wonderful, and the reader will get a very interesting picture of the American Revolution. Recommended."—Library Journal "Splendid story of the American Revolution....The illustrations are as beautiful, finely detailed, drawn with knowledge and love. In every way this is a worthy successor to the author''s well-loved Ben and Me."—The New York Times "Perhaps one of the season''s most distinguished and delightful books, the illustrations are especially fine."—Christian Science Monitor "This is certainly Robert Lawson''s finest story."—Chicago Sunday Tribune
