The End of the Second Reconstruction

release date: Jun 30, 2020
The End of the Second Reconstruction
Democracy in the United States is under threat. The Trump administration’s attack on the legacy of the civil rights movement is undermining America’s claims to be a multi-racial democracy. This moment of peril has worrying parallels with a previous era of American history. The gains of the Reconstruction era after the civil war, which saw African Americans given full democratic rights, were totally reversed within a generation. There is a serious risk that the advances of the civil rights era – the ‘Second Reconstruction’ – will go the same way unless we learn from the past and appreciate that American democracy has never been a story of linear progress. Skilfully analysing the similarities – and the differences – between the 1870s and the 2010s, Johnson outlines a political strategy for avoiding a disastrous repetition of history in in the twilight of the Second Reconstruction. Anyone interested in seeing the Trump presidency in wider historical context, from students of race, politics and history in the US to the interested general reader, will find this book an essential and sobering guide to our past – and, if we’re not careful, our future.

T echnical Communication Today was written for introduction to technical communication or technical writing courses taught most often in English Departments. Technical Communication Today remains the only text to fully centralize the computer in the technical workplace, presenting how writers use computers throughout their communication process. Writers use their computers to help them think, research, compose, design, and edit. Not only is Technical Communication Today firmly rooted in core rhetorical principles, but the text also presents computers as thinking tools that powerfully influence how we develop, produce, design, and deliver technical documents and presentations. Technical Communication Today speaks to today''s students and how they expect to learn information. Instructional narrative is "chunked," so that readable portions of text are combined with graphics. This presentation facilitate learning, and models the way today''s technical documents should be designed. Additionally, the chunked presentation integrates an awareness of how documents are read--often "raided" by readers seeking the information they need. By mirroring these processes in its content and structure, Technical Communication Today offers readers a higher level of accessibility.

Post Hurricane Black Turpentine Beetle Damage

release date: Dec 12, 2007
Post Hurricane Black Turpentine Beetle Damage
The Louisiana timber industry relies on the availability of harvestable trees. In areas affected by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, the black turpentine beetle (Dendroctonus terebrans) contributed to the mortality of loblolly (Pinus taeda) and slash (Pinus elliottii) pine trees. This timber loss due to natural causes reduces the landowner s earnings The BTB girdles the cambium layer of pines that are weakened by wind or drought. This study estimated post-Rita beetle damage on a 458-acre slash pine tract consisting of 157 trees per acre on the West Bay Wildlife Management Area, Louisiana. Timber loss was estimated by identifying, mapping, and calculating the board footage of infested trees on 40 randomly selected plots within the sampling area. There were 785 infested trees that averaged 28.3 board feet per tree. The loss totaled to 22,216 board feet with a value of $7,775. The estimated timber loss was compared to historical tree losses due to beetle infestations. Further research should be implemented to gather additional information on timber losses that resulted from the consequential infestation of the black turpentine beetle in hurricane affected timber stands. Key Words: Black turpentine beetle, Hurricane winds, Slash Pine Timber, West Bay Wildlife Management Area, Trimble

Union-Find Data Structures and Algorithms

release date: Jun 09, 2025
Union-Find Data Structures and Algorithms
"Union-Find Data Structures and Algorithms" "Union-Find Data Structures and Algorithms" delivers a comprehensive exploration of the mathematical foundations, core implementations, and advanced techniques underpinning one of computer science’s most essential data structures. Seamlessly blending rigorous theoretical exposition with practical engineering insights, the book opens with foundational concepts in set theory, graph connectivity, and complexity analysis—equipping readers with the intellectual tools necessary to grasp the delicacy and depth of union-find. Key chapters unpack classical and amortized complexity, the role of the inverse Ackermann function, and the subtleties of formal data type abstractions, ensuring that readers build a solid baseline before engaging with more advanced material. The volume proceeds to a detailed survey of fundamental and optimized union-find implementations, tracing the evolution from array-based and linked-list structures to forest representations and persistent variants. It devotes special attention to algorithmic heuristics—including union by size, union by rank, and sophisticated path compression techniques—offering empirical benchmarks and comparative analyses that underscore both theoretical and real-world performance. Advanced sections tackle lower bounds, optimality proofs, and the challenges of dynamic updates, deletion, and parallelization, drawing clear connections to contemporary needs in distributed systems and high-performance computing. A hallmark of this text is its devotion to bridging theory with application. Through in-depth case studies, readers discover union-find’s pivotal role in minimizing spanning trees, processing large-scale graphs, enabling image segmentation, powering distributed consensus, and facilitating efficient clustering in data analysis and machine learning. The book concludes with forward-looking discussions on research frontiers, from quantum algorithms to privacy-aware and fault-tolerant systems, making it an indispensable reference for researchers, engineers, and students seeking a nuanced, authoritative treatment of union-find data structures in both classical and emerging domains.
