The Fabulous Matter of Fact

release date: Jan 01, 1991
The Fabulous Matter of Fact
"The twentieth-century novelist Neil M. Gunn is best remembered for his evocative accounts of Highland life as given in The Silver Darlings, Morning Tide and Highland River. In The Fabulous Matter of Fact, Richard Price goes beyond this starting point and provides the reader with both a comprehensive study of all Gunn's extant novels (including an early unpublished novel), and a detailed account of the literary context within which Gunn worked. Close textual criticism is enriched by references to Gunn's poetry, short stories, essays and letters, and many of his key sources and allusions are identified for the first time. Price explores Gunn's early literary relationship with the Celtic Twilight writers of the late nineteenth century, and his subsequent relation to the work of modernists such as Eliot and Proust, showing that Gunn was much more aware of literary movements than has been believed." "Price also describes the historical context of the 1940s, focusing on Gunn's complex reaction to the war and his views on the nature of freedom, and he traces the extent, in Gunn's later novels, of his increasing interest in the limitations and loci of human compassion." "Including useful plot summaries and a radical re-reading of the novels from the mid-1940s onwards, this is the most wide-ranging, approachable and informative guide to the work of Neil M. Gunn available."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved

Lucky Day

release date: Jan 01, 2005
Lucky Day
Natural landscapes through which love and lyricism flicker and flare are the backdrop for these poems. The sparrows, pigeons, and magpies of the urban periphery lighten the atmosphere as they edge the collection toward the city in the humorous elegy "Bird List," while "Hand Held," a personal and vulnerable piece, delicately celebrates the author's experience of fathering a child with severe learning difficulties. The collection is filled out with pieces of love and memory, affirming in the end the luck intrinsic to survival.

Small World

release date: Dec 01, 2012
Small World
At times angry and despairing, these poems evoke hospital conditions and social attitudes toward the ill, but focus on the intricate reality of living day to day and trying to bring memory to bear on the future. In this collection, "The Patient" suffers a brain hemorrhage, causing the poet to carefully examine the days before and after this heartbreaking event. A multilayered compilation, it builds a rich portrait of love under almost intolerable pressure.

The Council of Ephesus of 43

release date: Jan 01, 2020
The Council of Ephesus of 43
The First Council of Ephesus (431) was the climax of the so-called Nestorian Controversy. Convoked by the emperor Theodosius II to restore peace to the Church, it immediately divided into two rival councils, both meeting at Ephesus. Attempts by the emperor's representatives to get the bishops on both sides to meet together had no success, and after four months the council was dissolved without having ever properly met. But a number of decrees by the larger of the two rival councils, in particular the condemnation of Nestorius of Constantinople, were subsequently accepted as the valid decrees of the 'ecumenical council of Ephesus'. The documentation, consisting of conciliar proceedings, letters and other documents, provides information not only about events in Ephesus itself, but also about lobbying and public demonstrations in Constantinople. There is no episode in late Roman history where we are so well informed about how politics were conducted in the imperial capital. This makes

O nascimento da cultura afro-americana

release date: Jan 01, 2003
