Six American tourists, all recent high school graduates, are on a whirlwind, budget tour of Europe. They get lost at the Eiffel Tower. Their attempt to join up back up with their tour fails and they never get to Munich. Will they make it to Amsterdam in time for their flight home? Is their vacation ruined? It's 1985 and there are no cell phones to guide them. Will they fall in love? Will they get on each other's nerves? Will the tour guide be fired? Will they have the time of their lives?

The Biltmore is an alternative oral history about the futile attempts to develop a vacant, beachfront lot in Hermosa Beach, California over twenty years. In 1969, The Biltmore, a derelict hotel and the tallest building in Hermosa Beach was torn down. For some, the loss of such an iconic building marked the point at which Hermosa Beach was no longer a paradise. Many of us remember our childhoods fondly, perhaps the area we grew up in, including its buildings and businesses, more than our families. Many of the events in the book happened but the book is a work of fiction. Hermosa Beach went from being a town at the beach to a town of surfers living the dreams of all who loved Gidget, Beach Party movies, and surf music. That didn't last long as later in the 1960s it became a hippy paradise where it seemed that residents were required to own a Volkswagon Beetle. That didn't last long either and the town became a party town for single software and aerospace engineers. A small contingent of punks tried to stage a rebellion but that was short-lived as housing prices soared and modest houses were torn down and replaced with houses that strained the limits of the small lots.

There are many ways to look at love. It can be exciting and happy. It can be terrifying or tragic. Love can bind us or blind us. We may step into it, run with it, or run away from it. It is necessary and always there even if it is absent. Ten Tales of Love offers ten stories of love but precious little romance.

Headwater streams are common features of forested landscape and provide critical resources to near-stream riparian forests and downstream aquatic habitat. In many small streams in the southern Appalachians, often narrow and heavily shaded, these systems are almost entirely dependent on external input of nutrients. The volume and quality of nutrients available to headwater ecosystems varies through space and time, depending on the species of trees present in riparian forests, the time of year, and the rate of litter-processing by invertebrates. Additionally, nutrients are not distributed uniformly through aquatic ecosystems, and may be moved or aggregated by both physical and biological processes. Despite the perceived greater reliance on allochthonous input, there has been little work to identify how wildlife inhabiting smaller streams are facilitating stream nutrient dynamics both within streams and riparian systems. To increase our understanding of the role of animals in headwater streams, my research investigates the patterns of density, biomass, foraging, and excretion in the Black-bellied salamander (Desmognathus quadramaculatus), the largest, most-aquatic species of salamander occurring in fishless headwaters of the southern Appalachians. Desmognathus quadramaculatus forage both within and directly around streams, spending significant amounts of non-foraging time in stream banks or under partially submerged cover objects. Additionally, D. quadramaculatus have a 3-year larval period in this region and require permanent aquatic habitat for larval development.

This report details the use of a DNA amplification-DNA sequencing methodology that enabled a viral genetic sequence to be determined from infected tissue or allantoic fluid in 18 hours or less. This rapid analytical technique at the genome level of the virus was crucial to effective decision making for control/quarantine of the virus in the field.

The Park City Math Institute 2016 Summer Undergraduate Faculty Program met for the purpose of composing guidelines for undergraduate programs in data science. The group consisted of 25 undergraduate faculty from a variety of institutions in the United States, primarily from the disciplines of mathematics, statistics, and computer science. These guidelines are meant to provide some structure for institutions planning for or revising a major in data science.
