Behind the Curtain
The Birth of an Idea! The turmoil of the 20th century bred a unique breed of creativity among some of its most insightful minds, and few embodied this spirit better than Pierre Boulle. Born in Avignon, France, on February 20, 1912, Boulle''s life experiences were the crucible from which his most famous work, "La Planète des Singes," would emerge. This novel, published in 1963, would eventually lay the groundwork for the legendary "Planet of the Apes" franchise that captivated audiences across generations. To understand how Boulle''s vision transcended the pages of his book and permeated the cinematic landscape, it is crucial to examine both the man himself and the world around him during a time defined by existential dread and philosophical inquiry. The background of Boulle''s childhood in France was riddled with the vibrant culture of literature, philosophy, and art, a milieu that would profoundly influence his writing. He grew up during a relatively peaceful period, but the impending storms of conflict would shape his perspective. At the age of 25, Boulle''s world changed forever as World War II erupted. As a passionate patriot, he enlisted in the French Army and found himself quickly caught in the devastating grip of conflict. His experiences during the war would haunt him, shaping the existential questions that pervaded his writing. Captured by German forces while on duty in 1940, Boulle spent over three years as a prisoner of war in solitary confinement. It was within this crucible of despair and isolation that Boulle began to reflect deeply on the human condition, questioning the nature of civilization, morality, and the concept of humanity itself. This introspective period would ultimately sow the seeds of the themes found in "La Planète des Singes." Upon returning to France after the war, Boulle became immersed in the cultural and intellectual currents of post-war Europe, which included a flourishing of existentialist thoughts. Figures such as Jean-Paul Sartre and Albert Camus were wrestling with concepts of absurdity, freedom, and the inherent struggles of existence, and their ideas resonated with Boulle. He began to explore these dynamics through his narratives, where overarching themes of identity and morality would begin to take center stage. "La Planète des Singes" is more than a mere sci-fi adventure; it is a deeply philosophical meditation on the nature of humanity and civilization. Central to the novel is the idea that our understanding of civilization is as precarious as the constructs we build around it. Boulle introspects on how easily the tables can turn, with the apes representing a society that, at one time, was relegated to a lesser status, only to rise and question the very tenets of humanity that define moral superiority. As Boulle crafted his narrative, he sought to mirror contemporary society''s struggles with oppression and the moral ambiguities tied to power dynamics. The apes in his tale are not merely a reflection of an alien society but a stark representation of the deeply flawed human nature that has the potential for both enlightenment and devastation. Through the lens of a world ruled by intelligent apes, Boulle exposed the dark underbelly of humanity''s past, fraught with colonialism and subjugation, which resonated with a global audience grappling with the vestiges of war and an uncertain future. His unique style, rooted in philosophical inquiry while remaining accessible, would ultimately beckon Hollywood''s interest. As the 1960s approached, the literary landscape was beginning to undergo a transformation, with science fiction assuming a larger role in mainstream culture.

End the Fed

release date: May 01, 2025
End the Fed
In the post-meltdown world, it is irresponsible, ineffective, and ultimately useless to have a serious economic debate without considering and challenging the role of the Federal Reserve. Most people think of the Fed as an indispensable institution without which the country''s economy could not properly function. But in End the Fed, Ron Paul draws on American history, economics, and fascinating stories from his own long political life to argue that the Fed is both corrupt and unconstitutional. It is inflating currency today at nearly a Weimar or Zimbabwe level, a practice that threatens to put us into an inflationary depression where $100 bills are worthless. What most people don''t realize is that the Fed -- created by the Morgans and Rockefellers at a private club off the coast of Georgia -- is actually working against their own personal interests. Congressman Paul''s urgent appeal to all citizens and officials tells us where we went wrong and what we need to do fix America''s economic policy for future generations.

Mises e a Escola Austríaca

release date: Jan 29, 2024
Mises e a Escola Austríaca

The School Revolution

The School Revolution
Twelve-term Texas Congressman, Presidential candidate, and #1 New York Times bestselling author Ron Paul returns with a highly provocative treatise about how we need to fundamentally change the way we think about America''s broken education system in order to fix it. Whether or not you have children, you know that education is vital to the prosperity and future of our society. Yet our current system simply doesn''t work. Parents feel increasingly powerless, and nearly half of Americans give our schools a grade of "C". Now, in his new book, Ron Paul attacks the problem head-on and provides a focused solution that centers on strong support for home schooling and the application of free market principles to the American education system. Examining the history of education in this country, Dr. Paul identifies where we''ve gone wrong, what we can do about it, and how we can change the way we think about education in order to provide a brighter future for Americans.

This is a world in motion, a world filled with goodbyes. Cars travel deserted highways, and we witness acts that he translates into poems of arching bravura. This is a deeply felt and moving debut collection." - Barbara Hamby, author of All-Night Lingo Tanto

Why Monetary Freedom Matters

release date: Jan 01, 2013
Why Monetary Freedom Matters
I''ve thought about and have written about the Federal Reserve for a long time. I became fascinated with the monetary issue in the 1960s, having come across the Austrian economists, especially Hayek and Mises, and I was very impressed with August 15, 1971, because the predictions made in the 1960s came about. As a matter of fact, Henry Hazlitt made that prediction in 1944 when the Bretton Woods system was set up. He said it wouldn''t work and it would fall apart -- and it did -- so that was a strong confirmation. But even after all these years of studying and reading and trying to figure out the monetary system, I have come to the conclusion that the Federal Reserve is unconstitutional -- and we don''t need it (Paul 2009). So with that approach I have worked hard in Congress for sound money.

Pursue the Cause of Liberty

Pursue the Cause of Liberty
This is Ron Paul''s "Farewell to Congress" delivered on November 14, 2012. Yet this is not reminiscence of good times spent in the halls of power. Rather, in this booklet, you will find a devastating denunciation of the evils perpetrated by the Federal government and the "psychopathic authoritarians" who seek to swell its power, as well as a clarion call for what he calls an "intellectual awakening" and a return to freedom. Dr. Paul sums up and presents with strong conviction the principles he has held fast to during his entire career. Neither is this a "retirement speech". Rather this is a "goodbye to all that", as he kicks Washington''s dirt off his feet, and enters what is sure to be the most productive period of his life. -- from Mises Institute website

Gold, Peace, and Prosperity

release date: Jul 25, 2011
Gold, Peace, and Prosperity
Revised Pocket Edition! The second edition of Gold, Peace, and Prosperity is just 4.25" x .4" x 7 " in size. Truly portable and available at volume discounts. The book has been newly type set and all images updated. This is the perfect handout for education of the gold standard. The book is a quick read that covers the whole history of monetary destruction, providing information that most people have never heard or thought about. In that sense, it is the perfect conversation starter, and it could inspire more reading and activism for sound money. We produced this beautiful edition for the broadest distribution - an effort to popularize and universalize the cause of sound money. Author Ron Paul has been the leading champion of sound money in the Congress. He explains why sound money has meant the gold standard. The monograph is written in the clearest possible terms with the goal of explaining the basics of paper money and its effects of inflation, business cycles, and government growth. He maps out a plan to bring about a dollar that is as good as gold, one that would be protected against manipulation by government and central bankers. Part of that strategy is the minting of a new gold one but the more far-reaching plan involves a redefinition of the dollar and complete monetary competition. This monograph first appeared in 1981, and it has been in wide distribution ever since. But we''ve never had an edition this beautiful, this affordable, and this handy. Second Edition Foreword by Henry Hazlitt Preface by Murray Rothbard.

Liberty Defined

release date: Apr 19, 2011
Liberty Defined
In Liberty Defined, congressman and #1 New York Times bestselling author Ron Paul returns with his most provocative, comprehensive, and compelling arguments for personal freedom to date. The term "Liberty" is so commonly used in our country that it has become a mere cliche. But do we know what it means? What it promises? How it factors into our daily lives? And most importantly, can we recognize tyranny when it is sold to us disguised as a form of liberty? Dr. Paul writes that to believe in liberty is not to believe in any particular social and economic outcome. It is to trust in the spontaneous order that emerges when the state does not intervene in human volition and human cooperation. It permits people to work out their problems for themselves, build lives for themselves, take risks and accept responsibility for the results, and make their own decisions. It is the seed of America. This is a comprehensive guide to Dr. Paul''s position on fifty of the most important issues of our times, from Abortion to Zionism. Accessible, easy to digest, and fearless in its discussion of controversial topics, Liberty Defined sheds new light on a word that is losing its shape.

The Case for Gold, Second Edition

release date: Jan 01, 2011
The Case for Gold, Second Edition
This is the LvMI 2nd Edition! Pocket sized 5" x 7" and with a new foreword by Llewellyn H. Rockwell, Jr. Here is the revolutionary book on monetary reform - brilliant, compelling, clear, with specific reforms to do now - in an edition for global distribution. See the price. And the format is really a pocket edition edition: extremely small format that is super convenient. This edition is specifically designed to be purchased in large quantities. Had the U.S. followed the recommendations of this wonderful report when it came out in 1982, there would have been no housing bubble, no gigantic government debt, no depression, no economic upheaval, no high unemployment, and no international turmoil. This was a window of opportunity for reform. This is proof that Ron was right. In 1982, Ron Paul served on the U.S. Gold Commission to evaluate the role of gold in the monetary system. In fact, the Commission was his idea. It was carrying forth a promise made in the Republican platform. Back then, Republicans at least made noises about favoring a gold standard based on a gold dollar. Ron couldn''t pick the members, so from the beginning, the deck was stacked. The majority was dominated by monetarists, who saw gold as too scarce and paper as just fine. Ron Paul''s team was ready, however, with this marvelous minority report. Rarely has a dissent on a government commission done so much good! The result was The Case for Gold, and it was the greatest result of the commission. It covers the history of gold in the United States, explains that its breakdown was caused by governments, and explains the merit of having sound money: prices reflect market realities, government stays in check, and the people retain their freedom. The recommendations include re-establishing a gold standard and a gold dollar in addition to permitting monetary competition and the private production of moneys. The scholarship and rigor impressed even the critics of the minority. Ron and Lewis Lehrman worked with a team of economists that included Murray Rothbard, so it is hardly surprising that such a book would result. It still holds up as an excellent blueprint for moving beyond paper money and into the age of sound money. In particular, Ron favors complete monetary freedom to use any commodity as money, to make contracts in any money, and an end to the monopolization and printing power of the Federal Reserve. There is a strong piece of history in this book. Not since the 19th century has a political figure made such a sweeping and devastating case for radical monetary reform. This congressman ran circles around even the experts at the Fed. A dazzling performance indeed, and an inspiring and learned book. This remains the best possible case for a gold dollar and monetary freedom in print in our times. The pocket edition is the ideal format to give this book the attention and influence it deserves.
