The Best Technology Writing 2009
In his Introduction to this beautifully curated collection of essays, Steven Johnson heralds the arrival of a new generation of technology writing. Whether it is Nicholas Carr worrying that Google is making us stupid, Dana Goodyear chronicling the rise of the cellphone novel, Andrew Sullivan explaining the rewards of blogging, Dalton Conley lamenting the sprawling nature of work in the information age, or Clay Shirky marveling at the ''cognitive surplus'' unleashed by the decline of the TV sitcom, this new generation does not waste time speculating about the future. Its attitude seems to be: Who needs the future? The present is plenty interesting on its own. Packed with sparkling essays culled from print and online publications, The Best Technology Writing 2009 announces a fresh brand of technology journalism, deeply immersed in the fascinating complexity of digital life.

The Storytellers

release date: Aug 06, 2019
The Storytellers
"In The Pro Wrestling Hall of Fame: The Storytellers (from the Terrible Turk to Twitter), Greg Oliver and Steven Johnson explain how wrestling''s unique take on storytelling has fueled its remarkable expansion. Based on hundreds of interviews and original accounts, Oliver and Johnson describe the imaginative ways in which wrestlers and promoters have used monkeys, murderers, smelt, and wedding cakes to put butts in seats and encourage clicks, likes, and swipes across countless screens. As they trace the evolution of wrestling storytelling, Oliver and Johnson take readers on a winding journey from the New York City Bowery in the 1890s to a Detroit bar in the 1960s to a North Carolina backyard in 2017, meeting up along the way with all manner of scoundrels, do-gooders, scribes, and alligators. Storytellers is a highly readable, heavily researched book that will leave readers with a new appreciation for the fine (and sometimes not-so-fine) art of storytelling."--

Applications of Fracture Mechanics to the Durability of Bonded Composite Joints

release date: Jan 01, 1998
Applications of Fracture Mechanics to the Durability of Bonded Composite Joints
The increased numbers of bonded composite components and bonded repairs of cracked structures make knowledge of adhesive bonding crucial to aircraft design and life extension. This report covers an effort which focused on using fracture mechanics to evaluate the Mode I fracture and fatigue properties of several adhesively bonded aerospace material systems. The research concentrated on bond line cracking rather than fatigue crack growth in composite or metal adherends. Particular attention was paid to the environmental durability of bonded systems in use or intended for use on transport, fighter, and supersonic aircraft. Analysis was performed using closed-form solutions as well as finite element analyses. Results were discussed with respect to their relevance and applicability to bonded joint design. Key results include the identification of significant degradation in some varieties of bonded joints subjected to long-term isothermal exposure under hot/wet conditions. The degradation was manifested by decreased fracture toughness and fatigue threshold levels. Finite element analyses were performed on specimens with dissimilar adherends having complex geometries and thermally induced stresses in the bond line. A case study in which finite element analyses were used to relate the experimental results from this program with those of an independent project is also included. The analyses highlight the importance of using tapered adherends to avoid fatigue failures and show that typical aircraft skin stresses are below experimentally obtained threshold values for the specimen geometries investigated. Results of this study emphasize that the environmental durability of adhesively bonded joints is a key issue which must be considered by aerospace design engineers.
