Leadership

release date: Aug 15, 2014
Leadership
Advice for leaders in every arena of life on facilitating problem solving, creativity, innovation, and a sense of mutual ownership. The answer to resolving a problem in any relationship is likely found where the power is located. Who are the true leaders, what are their expectations, and how well do they communicate with those they lead? And, how well and candidly do those significant to the leader communicate back? This is where trust, safety and respect play a huge role in how the relationship plays out and either grows, mutually, or is destructive, mutually. Most leaders tend to communicate badly, have unspoken or inflexible expectations towards those they lead and blame others for their own failings. Leadership: Power and Consequences confronts this problem of leadership directly and clearly by using Sy Ogulnick’s personally experienced stories. He clearly describes the path leaders must take if they are to personally grow, to understand themselves better, and to contribute to the growth of those they lead. When authentic communication takes place between those in power and those immediately at the effect of this power, trust, safety, and respect are felt by everyone involved. This must be found in the environment or genuine dialogue between them is impossible and will not, even at the point of a gun, take place. And it is the leaders who are primarily responsible for the creation of the environment. Words do not make it so, but action (behavior of the leaders) does.

Lasting Longer

release date: Apr 01, 2010
Lasting Longer
Editorial Reviews According to Dr. Stacy L. Elliott, MD, the medical director at Vancouver Hospital''s BC Center for Sexual Medicine, Lasting Longer has been instrumental in sexual education and treating sexual dysfunction for many years. She says: He was before his time in his thinking and experience has proven him to be right. We have used Dr. Silverberg''s Lasting Longer faithfully for the twenty-five years of our history. His newer version is even easier to understand, has more directed exercises, and is even more positive and encouraging than his original version. We are very grateful for his assistance all these years. Dr. Elliott is also a professor at the UBC Department of Psychiatry''s Division of Sexual Medicine. She is a well-recognized expert in the field of male sexual dysfunction and has been the Chair of the Canadian Male Sexual Health Council. Lasting Longer was written by Dr. Sy Silverberg. an MD/Certified Sex Therapist with 40 years experience. It was first published in 1978. Since then it has been distributed only to professionals who have used it to help thousands of men, worldwide, to learn how to control ejaculation. It was revised in 2010 and rewritten so that any man can understand it without the support of a therapist. This was done in part to combat the professed online cures being offered to men at exorbitant prices. For the most part these solutions are useless and in some cases even harmful. And since the answer to controlling ejaculation lies in learning, these sprays, herbs, vitamins, dietary supplements and drugs will not help you learn to control premature ejaculation any more than they could help you learn to speak another language. Time has proven my belief that P.E. is so prevalent simply because young men have never been taught how to control ejaculation, he explains. Dr. Silverberg equates the learning process to learning bladder control. Lasting Longer leads men step-by-step through a series of exercises designed to teach them how to recognize the signals from their bodies that indicate they are approaching the point of no return . They, then learn how to control the reflex that triggers ejaculation. Exactly the same way they learned to control the reflex that triggers urination. He believes that any man who was toilet-trained can learn ejaculatory control. Lasting Longer stands out from other publications on the topic in that it does not present page after page of historical data, statistics, demographics, scientific jargon or entertaining clinical examples. Instead it uses clear and concise language to outline only the steps necessary to correct the problem. In addition it offers concrete suggestions for developing a satisfying long-term sexual relationship with a partner of either gender. Excerpts of the book may be viewed at: http: //sextherapy-prematureejaculation.com. Dr. Silverberg says: "I imagine that many of you have had the experience of spending hundreds of dollars on ''cures'' that have not worked. For your own sake please try this approach. If you are not able to learn how to control ejaculation to your satisfaction, I will refund the full purchase price to you."

Walking with the Great Apes

release date: Aug 25, 2009
Walking with the Great Apes
From the personal to the primate, Sy Montgomery–acclaimed author of The Soul of an Octopus and The Good Good Pig–explores the science, wisdom, and living experience of three of the greatest scientists of the twentieth century. Three astounding women scientists have in recent years penetrated the jungles of Africa and Borneo to observe, nurture, and defend humanity’s closest cousins. Jane Goodall has worked with the chimpanzees of Gombe for nearly 50 years; Diane Fossey died in 1985 defending the mountain gorillas of Rwanda; and Biruté Galdikas lives in intimate proximity to the orangutans of Borneo. All three began their work as protégées of the great Anglo-African archeologist Louis Leakey, and each spent years in the field, allowing the apes to become their familiars–and ultimately waging battles to save them from extinction in the wild. Their combined accomplishments have been mind-blowing, as Goodall, Fossey, and Galdikas forever changed how we think of our closest evolutionary relatives, of ourselves, and of how to conduct good science.

Journey of the Pink Dolphins

release date: Feb 15, 2009
Journey of the Pink Dolphins
By the acclaimed author of The Soul of an Octopus and the bestselling memoir The Good Good Pig. When Sy Montgomery ventured into the Amazon to unlock the mysteries of the littleknown pink dolphins, she found ancient whales that plied the Amazon River at dawn and dusk, swam through treetops in flooded forests, and performed underwater ballets with their flexible bodies. But she soon found out that to know the botos, as the dolphins are locally called, you must also know the people who live among them. And so in Journey of the Pink Dolphins, Montgomery—part naturalist, part poet, part Indiana Jones—winds her way through watery tributaries and riverside villages, searching for botos and hearing the tales of locals who believe these ethereal dolphins are shape-shifters—creatures that emerge from the water as splendidly dressed men or women only to enchant their human onlookers, capture their souls, and then carry them away to the Encante, an underwater world. Montgomery takes readers on four separate journeys, exploring the river-dwelling dolphins’ natural history, chronicling their conservation pressures, unraveling their prehistoric roots, and visiting with shamans who delve into the Encante.

The Good Good Pig

release date: Apr 17, 2007
The Good Good Pig
"In loving yet unsentimental prose, Sy Montgomery captures the richness that animals bring to the human experience. Sometimes it takes a too-smart-for-his-own-good pig to open our eyes to what most matters in life.” —John Grogan, author of Marley & Me: Life and Love with the World’s Worst Dog A naturalist who spent months at a time living on her own among wild creatures in remote jungles, Sy Montgomery had always felt more comfortable with animals than with people. So she gladly opened her heart to a sick piglet who had been crowded away from nourishing meals by his stronger siblings. Yet Sy had no inkling that this piglet, later named Christopher Hogwood, would not only survive but flourish—and she soon found herself engaged with her small-town community in ways she had never dreamed possible. Unexpectedly, Christopher provided this peripatetic traveler with something she had sought all her life: an anchor (eventually weighing 750 pounds) to family and home. The Good Good Pig celebrates Christopher Hogwood in all his glory, from his inauspicious infancy to hog heaven in rural New Hampshire, where his boundless zest for life and his large, loving heart made him absolute monarch over a (mostly) peaceable kingdom. At first, his domain included only Sy’s cosseted hens and her beautiful border collie, Tess. Then the neighbors began fetching Christopher home from his unauthorized jaunts, the little girls next door started giving him warm, soapy baths, and the villagers brought him delicious leftovers. His intelligence and fame increased along with his girth. He was featured in USA Today and on several National Public Radio environmental programs. On election day, some voters even wrote in Christopher’s name on their ballots. But as this enchanting book describes, Christopher Hogwood’s influence extended far beyond celebrity; for he was, as a friend said, a great big Buddha master. Sy reveals what she and others learned from this generous soul who just so happened to be a pig—lessons about self-acceptance, the meaning of family, the value of community, and the pleasures of the sweet green Earth. The Good Good Pig provides proof that with love, almost anything is possible.

Between Tedium and Terror

release date: Jan 01, 2000
Between Tedium and Terror
When Sy Kahn set off to serve in the Pacific during World War II, he was a bookish, naive nineteen-year-old, the youngest in his company. Convinced he would not survive the war, Kahn kept a meticulous record of his experiences as his "foxhole of the mind," even though keeping such a journal was forbidden by military regulations. His secret diary--one soldier's "mark against oblivion"--is a rare ground-level account of the war. Often writing in tents by candlelight, in foxholes, or on board ships, Kahn documents life during four campaigns and over three hundred air attacks. He describes the 244th Port Company's backbreaking work of loading and unloading ships, the suffocating heat, the debilitating tropical diseases, and the relentless, sometimes terrifying bombings, accidents, casualties, and deaths. His wartime odyssey also includes encounters with civilians in Australia, in the Philippines, and, as among the earliest occupation troops, in Japan. A detailed record of the daily cost of war, Kahn's journal reflects his increasing maturity and his personal coming of age, representative of thousands of young Americans who served in World War II.
